View Full Version : Clarifying the end of the world...

Right, BASICALLY

The biggest physics experiment known to man is being fired up today,
its cost a whopping 5.3 billion i think and is a joint effort from alot of nations, Britain its self has put in 500million.

The experiment is underground in Geneva, its at a place called CERN and its a sub atomic particle accelerator, so whats gona happen is they fire 2 sub atmoic particles (protons) in opposite directions round a specillay made.... er race track? ha

using corrective magnets to steer the protons they will crash head on replicating (with any luck) the big bang

the explosion will produce temperatures 10 TIMES that of the heart of the sun, the track is supercooled to -271 degress, which is only a degree off absolute zero,

NOBODY is going to die!

IF! and its a very big IF, a black hole is created it will be microscopic and last for 10 billionths of a second,

the point of the experiment is to find a particle called a boson (higgs boson after the guy who thought of it) the best way to think of this is that you have allllllll of your forces, gravity etc, and to make them all work and be relitive to each other u need some super glue, aka, the higgs boson

exciting stuff, if you wear glasses and get excited over magnets..... ohhhhhhhhh yeaaaaah :thumb:

what do you all think of this??

NovaBoi92
10-09-08, 08:45 AM
it stuff that we're not meant to know. leave it that way

Jack

This thread needs Phil Sutton and Hendrix. In fact, we've had this discussion before I believe. lol

Who says were not meant to know it?

NovaBoi92

i do

Stuart
10-09-08, 08:57 AM
is it because you dont understand it that you think we shouldnt know about it?

that puts 99% of most stuff in the same boat for most people

NovaBoi92
10-09-08, 09:02 AM
i dont know really, it might be because i dont understand it, but its just that if theres any risk that this could put the whole world at risk - just for the benefit of science, knowing what happened after the big bang...may be the end of the world...dont know. apartently scientist may be able to find a cure for cancer etc.. after the results are collected for this experient in about a years time. cure for cancer - big bang? how? they said it on gmtv

Jack
10-09-08, 09:04 AM
According to the BBC, it will cause cancer

NovaBoi92
10-09-08, 09:04 AM
gmtv vs bbc. gmtv ftw! :)

I don't care Bob, you're fired. YOU'RE FIRED! You're f*****g fired Bob.
Clean out your locker at the club Bob, YOU'RE F*****G FIRED!
I don't f*****g care what he told you, ok? I'm talking about 40 million f*****g Deutschmarks here Bob, 40 million f*****g Deutschmarks. I told you to wire the money to Gineva last week. I say Gineva- you hear Helsinki. eh? 40 MILLION F*****G DEUTSCHMARKS BOB!

Tidy Max
10-09-08, 09:19 AM
the track is 27km long and the particles do 11,000 laps a second.... like me at rockingham ha

i see what your saying 91sr, but 2 steps forward one step back surely is better than staying in a rut, besides the end of the world argument is abit weak, the chances of it happening are stupidly stupidly minimal, i think you probably have more chance dying from a nova landing ontop of your nova while your at a nova show......

interesting though, i dont understand the cancer thing, can anyone explain? im at work and GMTVless

Tidy Max
10-09-08, 09:20 AM
im the backwards man the backwards man...

NovaBoi92
10-09-08, 09:22 AM
they didnt explain the cancer thingie much, they just said some thing like 'may even hold the cure to dieseases such as cancer..' yeah lol the end of the world by a few tiny black holes that could grow into a big black hole and kill us all. yeah - what am i on about it is quite i good thing i suppose.

Stuart
10-09-08, 09:22 AM
GMTV are cretins and claim that anything will lead to a cure for cancer (its a popular dickhead viewer winner). Where as BBC claim that everything causes cancer/aids/H5N1/Pollonium poisioning etc.

its like Karma lol.

also as said in another thread. Would we know we had all died because of the black hole experiment?

10-09-08, 09:28 AM
haha not sure :P the one step back is all the bad points that could possibly happen from this thing! someone saying it could cause cancer :S... if there is no step back then awesome lol

the blackholes arent happening, i think in theory a black hole can only get exponetial (however its spelt) if it is created to be quite large in the first place, rip in the space time fabric thang, not a microscopic one, it would just fizzle out kind of like a real torando, OR the little spiral of leaves u see on the pavement..

precisely watson, you got it, if anyones ACTUALLY interested then Steven Hawkings (well that put you all off instantly) book, a brief history of space and time, is a bangin book for explaining stuff in laymans terms

steven hawking and bangin in the same sentance, probably a first

NovaBoi92
10-09-08, 09:40 AM
steven haawkings is a legend. i watched a program on him. abit boring but hes...quite...clever. he moved his computer thingie and he talks but moving his cheek, its the only muscle he can stilll move. i think he like left clicks or summin with his cheek :p

He's been up a number of times in a zero-G dive aircraft to see if he can handle zero gravity. Apparently he plans to take a flight on a Virgin "galactic" sub-orbital space flight, of which Richard Branson has supposedly paid for.

Look at the numbers for the cooling systems!!! Mental really.
They have to take the temperature down to 1.9K to acheive superconductivity in the magnets that are used to bend (dipole) and focus (quadropole) the beam. This is so there is very low electrical resistance and to acheive a very high magnetic field (8.3Tesla iirc)
Thing is even though the proton beams are going to be at an energy of 7TeV, in real terms this is like the energy or a small insect like a gnat pmsl

Its all pretty impressive stuff even if they dont discover anything.. There are 'beam dumps' located around the particle accelerator for disspating the energy from the particle bleam which equates to about 4 Terrawatts!   Focused into such a small beam that is really emmence! Think of the damage a 1 megawatt laser can do and its miles bigger than the particle stream I should think.

Apparently if one of the magents was to fail and the beam escaped it would go through the rock face like a stream of piss through a wet tissue.

So how do they find out how them particles got there before the big bang????
To paraphrase Stephen Hawking, asking what was there before the Big Bang is like asking how to go North when you're standing on the North Pole.

How do yo get rid of vandals and reduce crime and petrol prices with 5million quid
500 million :p Which, incidentally, according to Google is the same as Nothern Rock's losses!

The thing is, CERN is a (relatively) one off cost. If you were to spend £500m on domestic issues, that would last probably a year at best and would require ongoing cost - for example, £500m may buy you 1,000 bobbies, or build a new hospital - but what happens next year when those coppers need paying, or that hospital needs maintenance? In terms of Government spending, £500m is not really that big a deal.

I had this discussion with a mate of mine today who drives a lorry for TNT. We got onto the subject that someone rekons it could compact the earth down to the size of a pinhead.
