Crank breather pipes

While fitting twin 40's this weekend I noticed there are 2 breather pipes which come out of the crank case. I thought there was only one, unless I'm mistaken and one of them is something else. One (smaller diameter) was attached to the carb, and one (bigger diameter) was attached to the air filter. Are they both breathers? It seems strange that there would be 2 pipes right next to each other if they do the same thing.

Can someone explain what they both are/do. Thanks.

yep, thats how they are. the smaller one can be blocked off, but the bigger one still needs to go into the filters, or into a catchtank.
