should a nova gsi have a rev limiter and if so what rpm should it be at as my mates dont seem to have one it revs off the clock till it valve slaps

its probaly a GTE engine then mate, they valve bounce

why isn't he just changing up at 6k like normal people?????[/quote]

the lads only asking a question here like!!

rodgers

yes, sorry only the earlier GTE,s valve bounce, later ones had a limiter

he doesnt want to know when to change gear! the lad asked a simple question wether his engine should or should not have a limiter................

I'm running GTE management (E16SE) and there's a rev limiter at 6400 rpm.

because of your snobby dick head comment to him, which youv now deleted SUPRISE SUPRIZE!

at about 10 am, I responded that they run out about 6500 rpm, but why not change up at 6k, like normal people.

my 88 c16se runs out at about 6500rpm

my comments were based on trying to drive a std 1.6i at fairly high speed but without blowing it up.
1.the rev counter has a big red section above 6k which is meant as a warning.
2.the power at 6k is around its maximum, so there is no point in revving any further.
3.the c16se in good condition does not valve bounce, the valve springs & followers will be over stressed on an old engine.
4.I pointed out that if the engine had a cam swap, some solid lifters & some head work, then it will easily rev over 6500, because there would be power available at higher revs.
5. I also pointed out that I was not going to rev the nuts off my engine just to find out if the rev limiter is working, and I also pointed out that the lads rev limiter might be faulty or modified................

you decided to use insults like the one above, whereas I was trying to use my knowledge & experience, which is what a forum is about. ps. I had a cup of coffee

Just to add, all GTE/GSi E16SE/C16SE's had a rev limiter. As stated any valve bounce will be caused by worn engine compenants or a high lift cam.

rite my mates cars a 1 owner from new no high lift cam just wanted to no really why the limiter isnt there

It is/should be there.
All gsi's had a rev limiter.
(unless someons removed the ecu, and running it on carbs or something)

Removed some of the pointless replies in the thread too :)

If the power tails off before the limiter is triggered, you won't reach it.

My old 8v GSi wasnt setup right in terms of timing I dont think & it would not pull to the limiter. Once when I was actively trying to blow it up (after a row with my ex) it did manage reach it once, downhill in 3rd. It is there - for a reason.

With a sports camshaft & other mods its likely the engine will pull to the limiter far more easily.

i hit the limter in 2nd and 3rd once or twice befreo my timing got mess up but in saying that i have a silly low rato box, but cant get near it now, but as everyone said change at 6k or just asker for best shirting

My old GTE had a limiter, and it was one of the earliest GTE's. So many novas have been fiddled with now that you cannot really confirm the second hand ecu you have is standard from just driving around. I had an ecu that was modified and the limiter was raised to god knows what - my engine never found it so I did the rev limiter mod on my dizzy cap - the same one that you can do on non injection novas.

1.6 8v's are pretty slow anyway so no point hammering them to the limiter, I hit the limiter in mine a couple of times in lower gears but absolutely no chance of doing it in 5th. Think it was around the 6.5k mark.

That must have been some motorway to get to those speeds

front in the air on axle stands? lol

I managed to hit the limiter in 4th in my 1.4spi astra on a "private test track" once (117mph btw), took another 10 minutes to go 5mph faster than that in 5th!

I normally catch the limiter everytime I drive my XE Nova, its waaaay to easy to bounce off it in 1st and 2nd in the wet as it'll just spin up to it......

xe Dan

he has just had the timing done and he only tends to over rev it in first as he put a f13 box in it for beter pull off speed but goes through the gear well quick and needle points straight down

tbh it actually wasnt, that was at 130 aswel :S seemed well odd, as far as i knew everything was completely standard apart from an air filter and exhaust
ive hit the limiter in 4th too :S hmmm

Nova hits the limiter in 5th at 150mph (speedo)
Focus will do about 140 off limiter in 5th, will pull to 153mph (speedo) in 6th

Been in a 34GTR off limiter in 5th at 181mph, then into 6th to 204mph.........

so it has descended into an 'I really believe the speedo & rev counter readings'....... its about as accurate as counting how many cows are lying down in a field & trying to work out the percentage chance of it raining.........

on a lighter note, one of my old employers sent me on a training course, & he clocked my mileage upon leaving & returning.... little did he know that i'd fitted a km/h clock especially for the event.......

Considering that most nova speedos are 10mph optimistic at 90, that was probably only about 125mph. Which co-incidently is the point at which I once compared my SR's speedo to my tom-tom, which was only showing 112mph, but meh, what matters is not how fast it will go, but how quickly it gets there (on private land or the track of course).

A xe doesn't spin the wheels and bounce of the rev limiter if you just drive about at normal revs/light throttle.

Any car will spin in 1st gear to the rev limiter in the wet if you want it to..

aka any vectra with the tc turned off! Especially if you have any more than half a turn on the steering with camac tyres so I've found lol
