Yep both, 1.6 in the early ones and 1.8 in the late ones. Something to do with not keeping up with a certain vauxhall astra gte at the time *cough*

oooo right so any ideas on the power of both models 1.6 and 1.8

and surly the 1.8 golf and the 2.0 ltr Astra never kept up with the 1.9 gti 205 lol

Carolfio lists the Mk1 as only having a 1.6 engine:

110bhp, 96lbft, 0-60 in 8.7 seconds, top speed 112mph

Wikipedia says the Mk1 only had a 1.6 but lists a 1.8 in the overall engine options, so I'd assume the GTi was fitted with it as it was the most powerful engine - be a bit daft to have the "sporty" model underpowered compared to another model in the range lol

They did a 1.6 with 4spd box......then a 1.6 with 5pd box (I had one).....then a 1.8 with 5spd box as found in the campaign models. I believe the 1.6 had 110bhp and the 1.8 118bhp. All had bosh k-jet mechanical fuel injection with a far superior head design to that of the vauxhall 8v. The 1.6 although down on power had a more free revving engine.
