x16xe is a better engine on the whole. but the x16xel has a better design head

c16xe is the best out of the three small block 1600's (c16xe/x16xe/x16xel) but if you are planning on future mods including a mantzel/dbilas style inlet then the x16xel with the triangular port head would be the best one to go for. alot of th earlier x16xe's fitted with the same head as the x14xe which is the same variant as the c16xe but with smaller ports.

sbd have stated the triangular port x16xel head is the best flowing design

As said above, the X16XEL has the best head design, but the factory inlet manifold has to be one of the worst I've ever seen. You can get in excess of 150bhp by replacing it with TB's and putting on a 4-branch and system.

am i right in thinking that if i fit a c16xe i wont need to dick around fitting the key and transponder? just the loom and ecu? also for this particular engine which car am i most likely to find it in?

Late corsa gsi, corsa 1.6 sports, and tigras=x16xe

yep only early corsa gsi's had the c16xe. well some i suppose as ive seemnthem in gsi's from l-reg and M-reg.

the transponder issue is very simple to overcome, you just gotto make sure all 3 are matching (chip/transponder/ecu)
