Hello peeps!

Thought id start a thread about my new car.
As some of you know, a few weeks ago, had quite a bad accident, and ended up completely wrecking the DC5, so i needed a new car.
Something fairly cheap, with tax and test to get me about.

Ended up buying this off Alfredo off E38 for a nice tidy sum.

Its a 96 N plate MK3 Golf 1.4 8v SE in Tornado Red
Cheap tax and insurance/fuel FTW
86k miles too. bonus

Spec is as follows
8+9 x 16 Design 90s Painted satin black
FK Coilovers
Full Cloth Recaro Interior from a VR6
Bonrath Debadged grille
German pressed plates with wolfsburg surrounds
Wolfsburg mats and golfball gearknob
Smoked side repeaters and rear clusters
De arched

All in all, pretty funking tidy.
Found one small bubble of rust on the pass side rear arch so far!!

Anyhow, heres the pics as i got it (Nicked from Alfy)

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn78/alfyalf/newgolf015.jpg

Nothing too special at the moment, but i think its a good base to start with

Plans are as follows
Give it a damn good detailing, clay, polish wax etc (this weekend)
Refurb the wheels (With a twist perhaps)
Vento front end (This weekend, although itll have a black bonnet for a while)
Have the arches rolled (ASAP)
Lower it further and fit camber shims on the rear for some scene stance y0 (Once arches are rolled)
Source and fit some CL Side Strips
Fit VR6 Front Splitter
Source and fit new rear splitter (this ones slightly damaged)
Have a complete blowover in origional colour to get rid of scratches
Slightly tint the windows
and so on..........

Comments weclome!

Cheers for looking!

Nice one Stoo, I'm in the market for a mk3 GTi myself atm, all seemed to of gone to the moon and back. Vento front is the only way to go  Something I've always want to do is smooth the boot over the top of the rear lights... I'll find an example..

Well, long term plans are to turn it into a minter, but with the current VW show scene, i havent got the cash to be really competetive. But ill do the best i can

hey, I'm liking that! I've already priced up a new bonnet and paint, but don't own a Golf yet lol

Little know fact - the Vento bumper is 20mm bigger than a golf one... Could be worth 'nicking' too, if you like the bigger bumper look. (I know this as my mate ordered a Golf VR6/early GTi splitter and it was too small)

Stoo
09-09-08, 06:47 PM
i know it is mate, but the bumper is black, not sure that would work!

Ive acquired a complete Vento TDi and im eyeing up the engine conversion at the moment too!!

Ash
09-09-08, 06:51 PM
Ah, your leaving the bonnet/grill black too then -

Personally if I was doing a derv conversion, I'd wait around till a PD engine came along, which I don't believe the mk3 had... could be wrong tho. You can still nick the tank, etc. Or use the engine till you find a PD

4 bols for the bonnet

May have to source some new coilies me thinks!

On another note, DIY rolled the rear arches, in a jap stylee!!
No more scrubbing :D
So, when i get new coils, ill get damping adjustable too, so i can deck it LOW, and wind up the stiffness to reduce scrubbing if any.
Oh yeah, will be fitting camber shimmage V V Soon too

Dont just wind up the dampers to stop scrub stoo, get stiffer springs. If you wind up the dampers too far they will just pop the seals eventually.

Stoo
10-09-08, 11:31 PM
Good shout Lee

Im looking at some gaz replacements
Custom Springs FTW TBH

Or alternatively, do you know of anywhere that does replacement springs???

Lee
10-09-08, 11:33 PM
most coilover suppliers will stock coilover springs tbh, so long as they're standard 2.25 inch diameter. Work out how long you want and what pondage and go from there.

Do you know what the current springs are rated to?

Stoo
10-09-08, 11:34 PM
not a clue mate

how do i work out length?
jsut measure origionals?

Lee
10-09-08, 11:36 PM
Yep, measure them with no load.

if theres any powder coating left you might find a poundage rating stamped on them.

If theyre standard i would estimate the fronts are 250lb, thats the norm anyway, unless a different poundage was specified when new or theyve been replaced of course lol

Dont forget that if you get stiffer springs the ride height will change as they wont settle as much as a softer set, so make sure you dont run out of thread at the bottom of the strut when you attempt to slam it. Measure twice, buy once lol

Stoo
10-09-08, 11:39 PM
i doubt they have been replaced
is it worth getting them a bit shorter, as they wont compress as much as the softer ones.

Am i right thinking this??
Theres loads of thread i can use to riase it back up if they are too short.

What sort of pundage would you reccomend if they are 250?
400?

Lee
10-09-08, 11:43 PM
I dunno pal, it depends on how soft they are at present tbh. Also if theyre old the springs might also be weak and not as strong as they would be new.

400 would be a bit excessive IMO, id go for 300 - 350 and then take up and extra softness with the dampers, but as I said, if you need to go above 3 quarters on the dampers, id go up anothr 50lb on the spring.

A short spring will compress just as much as a long one, just not as far obviously. Thts the beauty of a coilover, its a uniform wind all the way up :)

Stoo
10-09-08, 11:47 PM
if i stick with my current set up, just get new adjuster platforms, and replacement springs, i wont be able to adjust the damping

So i may go for stiffer springs to start with

what i mean about compressing, is if i get shorter springs than the current ones, they wont compress as far as the car sits on them if you know what i mean.

For instance, if i get the same length springs, when i lower the car off the ramp, it may sit higher due to the springs being stiffer. if you get me.
The old ones would compress a little with the cars weight on them.

So if i go shorter, and it sits too low, i can adjust it higher on the spring platform

savvy

Lee
10-09-08, 11:57 PM
Yeah, essentially if your planning on running uber low you want shorter springs so you dont run out of thread on the shocks when your winding the platforms down :)

Stoo
11-09-08, 12:02 AM
indeed
so maybe go for 350-400lb rears, 1" shorter?

Lee
11-09-08, 11:13 AM
Again, thats very stiff for a back end mate lol. That will be an absolute pig in the wet. Id go for some 200's on the back as you will probably find your currently running 150's.

Stoo
11-09-08, 11:17 AM
hahaha

well, i rang the FK Dealer just now
£7odd each + VAT for the adjustment/lock rings
x8 rings = nigh on £80

Plus the cost of new springs

= Prob being better off getting new ones tbh

Looking at some gaz ones as we speak.
Had them on my XE and highly rated them

Stoo
11-09-08, 09:20 PM
orted out the misfire tonight
Turns out it was the plugs/leads

When i took the old plug out, it just had a scre post on top
but the new plugs had like removeable nub type things on top
so the leads werent mating with the plugs properly
so took the nubs off, jobs a good un

Oh and one more thing i did tonight
CAMBER FTW!!!

Used washers between the stub axle and the beam!
Just Dubbin.On.A.Budget T.B.H

First time round didnt go so well, used a washer under each botl on the bottom and it induced some seeerious toe in, like so

Ben,Yeah, those actual wheels, in gold
Ive been contemplating doing the centres in black wrinkle paint, but alot of ppl have said the effect may be lost if i change from the gold.
We shall see.

The wheels are Schmidt Modernline Revolutions, the new ones with the spokes that curve out to the edge rather than sit flat in the centre.
i MAY have clearance issues yet, so they may be sold on if that is the case, and splits sourced and fitted.

They are 9x16 all round
ET25 on the front, ET18 on the back(which are the figs concerning me, im at ET22 on 9s at the back at the moment and have quite a large amount of poke. on the other hand, the smaller offset will enable me to run a bit more camber ;))

Stoo
30-09-08, 12:15 AM
Well ill be getting a debadged grill and eyebrow, sprayed in gloss black

As for the bonnet, Im not too sure yet mate
Im planning on doing a black roof too maybe see.

Then possibly red checks on the roof, bonnet and fuel cap

If i go that way, ill have the vento panels sprayed gloss black, as its metallic at the moment

Or
Ill keep the grille and eyebrow gloss black, and have the bonnet done red

Im not entirely sure yet.

Id like to run a bra, but you wont really see the visual effect of it so much on black.

Hmmm

Cheers for the comments guys.
Much appreciated.

Still not 100% what colour to do the rims, however im feeling Yellow in a big way for some reason!

Anyway, todays antics. Well

What a funking day!!!

First up
Rear wheels off

Completely rolled the arches flat, with a lump hammer!
paint was chipped and cracked anyway, so sanded the lips and whacked some black hammerite on just to keep the protected from the elements.

Next up, coilovers off
Plenty of WD40, a bit of love, and th adjusters freed up nicely. Raised them up by about 15mm to give me more clearance.
Cleaned them all up and refitted the lot back up.

The new wheel bolts were JUST catching the brake shoes in the drum, so got the grinding wheel out and trimmed them a few mm.
Now fit perfect.

Also, there was a little bit of play in the rear bearings. Will replace them ASAP, but for now just nipped them back up a little to takne the play out.

Refitted the wheels, dropped it down, and miles of clearance!
Woot!!

Fronts were a different story!!
Got the coilovers off, and stripped down to bar bodies with the adjuster/lock rings in place.

Cleaned em up with loads of WD, Used a little bit of heat and then tried to undo them

ALL 4 Rings just shattered and fell apart.
Over time, the thread in the rings has corroded into the thread on the bodies and seized them solid!

Anyhow, Luckily, Venom are literally 10 mins from my old mans house, so a quick drive, £30, and half hour later, im back home with 4 new rings!

Rebuilt the fronts, raised the height about 15mm and refitted it all.

Dialled in max camber too yo!

Will get it tracked and aligned properly tomorrow AM!

Also hammered the fron arch lips flat too, but the paint has cracked to FUNK! On the OUTside of the arch too!

Will get it all smoothed back and painted ASAP!
Thats if i dont give it a satin make over ;)

Will whore some pics on sunday maybe when its cleaned!

Satin red, I hope :)

You can't dare touch those rims, they are pure sex.

I'm personally fond of this one's front and rear end

Stu

Rick at Venom is a star!

Can I put my 2 penneth in?????????

What about the whole car and wheel centres done in Harvest Moon Beige (Beetle colour)

ummm, no!

Although if you were to gold leaf the inside of the headlights, tieing it in with the wheels maybe... then yellow/gold fogs/indictors might look ok...

Certanly differant, not the boring 'black/smoke everything out' approach

Btw the picture's on the front page saying there vento/ jetta front ends on a mk3 golf. There not jetta front end's. They are the rally front ends.

Jetta front ends arn't very nice headlights are to big. Better getting the rally cause headlights are smaller and it has the vent under them. Good luck finding one thou.

Nice car btw. You want to get the vr6 highline inverior. But hold out for the recaro leather.↲

If you live in the US the a Vento IS a Jetta! There never was a mk3 rallye, unless you count the 3 x A59's (which are cool as funk )

Mk2 rallye:
