Hello (Once again with another question),

I've decide I'd like to put smaller wheels on my Nova Saloon, however the problem of brakes is a worry.

Is there an affordable way of putting 13" Steelies on and having enough power/force to haul a 2.0 nova saloon?

Any suggestion's welcome.

Thanks again

Thomas

You're going to need to opt for after market goods for this, something like a billet 4 pot or similar. Try Demon Tweeks and tell them your requirments.

16v minishop had some 4 or 6 pots designed to fit under 13s if I remember correctly.

I suggested MG Metro 4 pots last time but Dod said they are crap? lol

mk1 xr2 calipers?

Have you seen Metro 4 pots?

Actually no, have you seen what you typed?

Metro??

The only good Metro was the 6R4.

haha I know, the 6R4 is god but AP racing 4 pots that fit behind 13's should never be overlooked purely on the basis of the donor car imo lol

my mate had a metro turbo, the brakes on that were pretty good. The rest of the car was pretty crap but it was funny

lol Surely the motor was good in it too? they fetch a few quid now. Good for sticking in Minis :)

The motor went well for about a week although it was in my friendship group for about 2 years and eventually the whole car was sold for 50 quid with a seized engine! If your gonna put an engine in a mini stick with the n/a 1275 or go for vaux 8v - I personally wouldnt bother with a turbo lump.

n/a 1275 or b18 y0 lol

Seen a couple of 20XE's also. Well worth 50 quid! Bet that was a while back?

We used to have a metro turbo back in 1994/95. Went really well for what it was. Then the turbo went so we sold it. I loved it though, had a well cool boost guage coming down between the rear view and the interior light iirc

I had a 1275 metro with a stage one kit on it and that went quite well for a 1.3 only problem was it had pram wheels on it.

I would imagine a b18 (y0!) would be a good mix of power with no too much weight.

One of my mates kinda went all out on his mini and put a v8 from a landrover in there. You can see it here http://www.spagweb.com/v8mini/
Its the bright yellow clubman.

He is running metro turbo calipers IIRC.

lol Doris :) That is nuts, bet that cos him a few quid. I'd rather have a zcars busa/r1 conversion personally.

He paid next to nothing for the built article as the bloke who built it needed room for that 'pie van'. It was a fraction of the cost of a z-car.

Anyways I better stop high jacking this thread.

My thoughts are that if metro turbo calipers can stop a 200bhp V8 mini then they should be able to stop a 2.0 nova.

i had an '89 metro gta, minter (as most are due to being owned by OAP's) was nippy for a 1275 (same engines as the clubman gt i believe) great handling and the AP 4 pots wer s**t hot which helped, if they can stop big power turbo/supercharged minis/metros at silly speeds then you should be ok

WTF's wrong with Metro 4 pots. Cheap as chips to buy and do work. I was amazed when I found my mum's 1.1 had 4 pots  :thumb:

T'was on a M plate too

^ No way! I thought it was just the MG's and just the turbos at that.

Dod, i win lol BTW wasn't aware of any Volvo 4 pots, are they on the 480? That 1700 turbo coupe model?

Dod

I cant remember the exact model but I know you could reverse into it with a Transit and it wouldnt damage it. lol

Andy, the Metro is a small car, smaller than the Nova, so realisticially the 4pots on the front cant be upto much if they're for slowing a small car. Anyway, I know people that wouldnt even fit these to the rear od Escorts and would favour XR3 brakes which were terrible.

do metro 4pots just bolt straight on?

i got a set of cally 16v calipers but i aint got the wheels to slide over yet :P

Probably would need to make an adapter bracket mate. I can get the measurements of some if you like.

Hi,

Thanks all for your inputs..............

But they are still kinda mix (which i guess will always be the case). The Metro brakes do seem to be a very good idea at the moment but it will also depend upon how easy they are to fit.

So metro Brakes:

Easy fit ?
Work well ?
Sack it off and get 15" and ATE's ?

It's not budget stuff, but Hi-Spec do 4-pot kits to fit behind 13" wheels.

The metro turbo four pot calipers were made by AP Lockheed and have 36mm pistons.
Using a 100bar input pressure, the standard nova setup (236mm) would give approx 1128Nm of torque per caliper, the standard 16v (256mm) upgrade 1495Nm of torque and the metro turbo setup (213mm) 1083Nm.

So basically the metro calipers have a smaller piston area than the 16v calipers but greater than the standard nova setup, so for a set squeeze on the pedal the order of braking power is 16v, metro, standard (assuming they all acted on the same size disc)

Hope this helps!

Right well i guess that there is no point on skipping on brakes so have been looking at Hi-Spec

http://www.hispecbrake.co.uk/Conversions/START%20vauxhall.htm

Not sure if i am in the right place but they seem to only do 15" plus.Im going to call them tomorrow at lunch and will update what I have found out.

If you find what I'm after (better site) please still post a link, would help with extra info.

Cheers,

Also thanks for you time in that reply oli.

Update :

I gave "Hi-spec Brake" a phone call and unfortunetly he didn't seem to sure about what I was going on about.

He said that he would need to see the wheel to get a better understanding of the fit(I would of thought he would know if 13" would be too tight but there you go).So it would appear that there isn't a current 13" brake conversion kit for a nova or any car (Well as far as he knows).

And I live no where near there to give him a wheel.

Andy, the Metro is a small car, smaller than the Nova,

Is it? I have no idea will have to try to find out. Surely the Metro has to be heavier though? (Rover Metro, not Austin)

lol ^

Isn't it Hi-Spec that have a hate page dedicated ot them?
I searched before and couldn't find anything, but I'm sure a guy had very bad dealings with them from start to finish, late delivery, didn't fit, parts missing etc. ?

Ok so thank you for the links everyone.I can't see the feedback about Hi-spec on one of the links but people seem to think there not so good.

http://www.16vminishop.co.uk/shopping_cart.php?sort=2a seem to be the way forward but once again it comes down to how hard they will be to fit?

so does anyone know if the mini fitment will be the same?

And how much should get charged to put these on my car (Its not worth me trying and gettin sh**e results) will ask around as thats always best but any idea welcome

Really big thanks to everyone who's given me a hand looking into this.

Tom
