Right here goes. After getting the car fixed after my off in Mull last year i discovered that the repair work done to the car has not worked and now faced with a rebuild, a total rebuild!! The shell is pretty much gone around the bulkhead so my only option is to start again.
So plan is to take this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/chunny01/models/Novapics240708013.jpg
Thanks Ernie:) :)
And try and turn it into something like this again
http://file045b.bebo.com/13/large/2008/02/17/00/5825197834a6918291989l.jpg (http://www.bebo.com/PhotoAlbumBig.jsp?MemberId=5825197834&PhotoId=6918292129&PhotoAlbumId=6918096862)
And all this is to be done in .....................20 weeks!!!
The plan is to pick up the shell this weekend then strip it and prep it for a full on weld in cage from custom cages then resparay it a single colour and then transfer all the parts from one to the other in time for the new season.
I intend to keep a full record of the complete swap and keep you all up to date on how its progressing. I know all the mechanicals work and work well but might change one or two things but it will be interesting to see how the car handles with the new weld in cage which will stiffen the shell greatly.
Comments and support will be good plus if anyone is bored i could do with as much help as i can possibly get.
Here's to strcnova mk2!:thumb:
Good luck with it mate! If I was closer I'd be well up for helping you :D
good plan. i was going to get that nova if it wasent so far away. good luck in rebuilding it. :thumb:

Hello you lot!!:) :)
I know i have been not on for a while so i better bring you up todate with what been going on.
First of all i got engaged at the end of Nov to my partner Tracy and yes she is still letting me out to play with my car.
Secondly i have bought a house with Tracy and we move into the new house on Friday!!!!
Thirdly said house has big back garden and new garage is about to be built! 5m wide and 6m deep all within 10yrds of my back door. no longer having to drive 30 miles to old unit. and it will decked out with all the right bits like plugs, lights shelves, kettle, microwave and fridge!!:thumb:
As for the car nothing has been done as i have been to busy with getting the house ready for the move.
Just bought CDS Custom Cage for the car and chassis plate kit. and will be fitted to the car over the coming weeks. The garage has to go throught planning which will take about 6-8 weeks during that time the shell will be prepped and cage and plate fitted and maybe painted too before being transfered back to its new home when the garage is finished being built.

01-03-10, 10:02 PM
where you have grinded all around the seams.are you going to be welding all of that underneath aswell??
strcnova
01-03-10, 10:12 PM
Some of the strengthing plates are on the underside of the car but welding from the top side with seam sealer below does not weld very well and can burn. Plus its more weight off the car too.

After almost a year away and a lot of hassle, looks like I will be picking the shell up tomorrow night. Have seen it with the cage finished and seam welded. Just the cross member and front panel to go on. So things are now starting to move forward at long last.
So guess it wasnt ready for your honeymoon then????
Glad to hear your getting it back mate looks a good build so far, you still going with the mcrae rep?
you still hoping to get it out for some events this year mark?
and did you get your inlet manifold sorted?
i'm still interested in your old weber setup if you sell it.
give me a shout again if you need a hand with anything :thumb:

With the rally getting canceled we changed the plans and the day. Then after we changed the plans another club took over the event and ran it. So we decided not to change them back. Also took some pressure of me. But the plan is to have the car ready for mull this year.
Yes still keeping it a McRae rep.
Not sure what's happening with the manifold, looks like the guy might not be selling it so may have to stick with the carbs.

strcnova
10-02-11, 07:57 AM
Yeah well the 20 weeks build went out the window big time!! lol
Its a custom cage multi point weld in cage, about 35 meters of CDS tubing with a HHMS strengthing kit fitted too, eg chassis leg, strut top, and suspension strengthing plates.
Its getting the works done to or as much as my walle will allow, but not scrimping if i can get away with it.

Now what to put on first:confused:
Nice one! I agree it's fantastic having a shell all one colour when you're used to it mismatched! Like how you've painted the front section black, does that mean you're not using a dashboard?
strcnova
21-06-11, 11:10 PM
Dashboard is going back in. The black is to reduce glare onto the windsceen and the dash will be flocked black too.
Yes its great to see it all one colour, makes such a differance.

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll208/speeders_photos/IMG-20110719-00062.jpg
Test fitted the dash and discovered that the heater matrix fits ok but the piping will not!!! This is due to the dash bar! Also the dials are going to be a problem too!! Dials will fit but will not be able to run a speedo, this is due to the cable being fould by the dash bar again. But some people would say i should not be looking at that and only the rev counter, which is slightly true, lol.

Yeah i was looking at the projects and there seamed to be none done. Plus i live quite near Lanark and spoken to Jimmy McRae. So with the historic rallying getting bigger and people doing Mk2 Escorts and other cars in replica colours of the period it seamed a good idea.
Looks like it was good one to going by the reaction of people.
Hoping for the begining of March but when ever the car is ready. I am not rushing it, i want it right.
Any plans to go to billing with it this year?
strcnova

I would like too. As long as it did not clash with any rallies. Would also take the Performance Vauxhall show, thats if i get though the Jim Clark Rally without any damage.
Plus it would be interesting to see how it would be recived, not sure on that one lol.
Start of July for billing, usually get a few of us from Renfrewshire going down

Not saying but have the choice of 2 engines. Will know more by Easter.
You can run standard billies but look at upgrading the inserts and running decent springs. Its all about comprise. What's best for the car and the roads and a Mull setup is unlike most other setups. I know what I run but wether that would work on yours not sure.

Very impressive so far - you can see the attention to detail is paying off - the overall finish is much more professional
I'm impressed with the hard brake pipes - where do you get the materials to make them from ? Easy to do? Expensive ?
Dave
strcnova
10-04-12, 09:41 PM
Yeah its really nice but a bugger to work with as its a lot harder material than the copper nickle stuff. My mate Haggis gets the stuff as he works with a WRC team in Belgium, but i belive its not cheap. Once you bend it thats it so if its wrong then that length is scrap and when its dear its going to be an expensive mistake!!

love how neat it all is for a nova rally car (most are budget bangers these days lol)
strcnova
10-04-12, 10:16 PM
Just want it done right. Makes it easier to fix at a later date. This is no budget banger! The carbs just cost me £245 to rebuild and recon!! I would say the budget spent so far is about £5000 and £3500 was on the shell alone before a single bolt was fitted and things will be getting added to it all the time and some times faster than i can pay for it too!

11-04-12, 06:35 PM
lovely car! been watching this for ages.
id be careful with that battery mount, looks like the battery can move sideways, potentially allowing the live to contact the strap... which wouldnt be a happy ending.
other than that it looks magic! cant wait to see it progressing.
strcnova
12-04-12, 03:09 PM
Kenny the battery has strong double sided tape on the back and stuck to panel. Its the same stuff for number plates and rear view mirrors. So with the straps and the tape it aint moving. Also the battery terminal will get a rubber cover too.
Loving the brake lines, much nicer that aeroquip to look at,
Did you get your rear bumper mounts sorted out?
strcnova
12-04-12, 03:55 PM
Yeah got it sorted but the bumper leading edges seam to stick out a bit too much but not sure what to do other than push the panel in a bit????
I've seen that before, sometimes the metal slide tabs on the bumper get a bit dog eared, you could have a look at them and try to sort it that way rather than bending panels lol
On a GTE bumper I bought, the chap remade the brackets from stainless steel and slightly smaller to pull the bumper in towards the body better.

Right here is a bit more of an update
As i said had a major wiring issue with regards to the kill switch!! It took several days to work out how a friend had wired it to incorporate an elecrical kill switch button instead of the big red toggle kind. After several failed attempts we reverted to the tried and tested pull kill switch.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll208/speeders_photos/IMG_1207.jpg
This was the mess i was working through!!
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll208/speeders_photos/IMG_1169.jpg
After more hair pulling attempts we then got all the lights working too!!
And after many attempts and stupid set backs this happened!!!!:):):thumb:

were did you get the blue engine bolts from mate ?
strcnova
27-03-13, 04:19 PM
There is still a lot of work to do but a major mile stone was reached when it started. It now feels like there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Brake lines at the rear need finished, wiring needs finished including moving the fuse box to the glove box side. Interior needs finished off, windscreen, sumpguard fitted, wheels and tyres sorted and all the usual finishing stuff for a rally car.
Blue bolts were on the engine when I got it, so can't really tell you but try Chris Offplot he will know.
Yes the engine sounds really sweet but needs to go to a proper rolling road to finish the tuning off properly.
