View Full Version : New Car needed

Hi, I'm going to gather a few quid and buy a new car but it needs to meet a certain Cryteria (sp)

All my cars up until now have failed and usually due to one or more of the Following:

.Engine Failure (head Gaskets are most Common)
.Suspension Failure
.Body Panel Damage (panels being too light, eg most Japs)

I'm after something as big as possible, preferably 4x4 and Petrol and wont suffer from the above faults.

Suggestions please.

PS, Subarus are a no go as they're Boxers which definately wont last.

FWD though and again, wouldnt take the abuse I'd be giving it.

I was thinking an Audi A6 Quattro but their thrashability seems low.

Cost?

Id recommend my IS200 to anyone...

if not any audi... bullet proof engines, solid quattro system. older RS4?

Are you for real????

Hondas are pretty much bulletproof if looked after right!
Thrash the tits of it all day long and itll still ask for more!!
FWD is irrelevant when they handle so well and has LSD standard!

See I dont really want to take care of it, It's ideally going to be thrashed round B roads and hopefully all going well, a LOT of land I'm hoping to buy so its going to be battered (flimsey Panels) suspension is going to be knocked stupid and not much good on the loose.

Loggy, the IS200 is an expensive ****er to repair with reagrds to rear end bushings (€600+ VAT per side!!) and again would break to easy on me.

The RS4 sounds like a plan though. What year are they roughly?

My mates ATR seems to turn into an S2000 on the back roads! Again a very underestimated car. Well worth 4-5K. You'd do well to break one mate, would have to driving like the FTPSNI! 9Even in their vids they cant break a DC2) lol

If you want to rally it about over rough ground etc I'd say any road car is a no go and you should be buying a jeep of some description. Suzuki SJ? lol

Ya shoulda bought the 4x4xFAIL from lee, now theres a reliable motor lmao!

bowler wildcat

but if were being realistic, you aint gonna find anything that you can thrash around a field, and on the road, not maintain it and expect it not to break.

Did you actually think this question through?

good old landrover they dont come with straight pannels as standard so would'nt make much differance if you did batter it a bit

Dod
01-09-08, 12:28 PM
Stoo, I did actually, I'm looking for peoples Opinions to see whats the best option. I know ideally I need a Tank with Nos but the next best thing'd suit. Something i can put a Sump Guard on, 4 Big Spots that wont boil over after every hard run.

I like the idea of a Legacy TT, but what are they like for thrashing?

01-09-08, 12:30 PM
Cant ya just build a lift kit for one of your 4x4 cavs then lol, what about a subaru forester, or a mitsubishi legnum?

Dod
01-09-08, 12:40 PM
4x4 Cavs? I dont have any mate. lol

The Legacy and the RS4 seem like the obvious choice at the minute but again I'm worried about reliability factor. An M3 or M5 Estate (E36) were the origional choice but they suffer from head warpage after a few sessions.

01-09-08, 12:55 PM
Oh thats me told, i thought one was a 4x4 Gsi and i definately thought you had a turbo aswell, are you sure you havent got one of each and just forgotten lol

Could you not simply try not to break your new car and then you wont have reliability issues lmao lol

Its not quite as bad to repair as the rep as they are older now and 2nd hand parts are more available. I got mine serviced and MoTd for £400, and thats a Full service and at Lexus, would have been only £250 at a normal garage. As for breaking easy, i dont think so! ive done nearly 10k in mine already, bringing over 100k, and its still feels great. Plus the intial buying cost is quite low, (for the spec you get) so it offsets the slightly higher running costs.

Sorry im ment RS2,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_RS2_Avant

and they are lot more than I ever realised
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/list.asp?s=278

in fact they have nearly doubled since i looked at them a few years ago.

RS4 is probly a bit too new, allthough its just as expensive as the rs2 now,

But the S4 could be be an option.

OH MY GOD LOGGY, They're ****ing aweful looking and have a Massively high Stance, it'd be perfect!!!!

The thing thats killing the idea of the IS is that its so low and wouldnt like rough terrain which is why a 4x4 is ideal.

As for a VX220? That wont get down the lane. It'd get stuck in a pothole.

See, my problem is the land I'm looking at it 40 miles from home, so I want to travel to and fro with stuff in the back of whatever i have (hense the necessity for space) and I want to travel in COmfort with a little poke. It'll have to cross rough terrain and probably be subject to the odd knock etc.

Was looking at this which seems dead on and not out of the way price wise...

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/656616.htm

I've also been thinking on a Sierra P100 Pick up with a Pinto or something but ideally I wanna buy it and drive it.

I dont think you get better than an Audis for a 4x4 'car' for cheapish money. Get an Avant as they look cool.
Only others would be BMW, but ud need a 3 or 5 series 'IX' which were 4x4, but RARE as rockinghorse doodoo. I dont know of any 4x4 mercs (cars). Then theres the sierra xr4x4, or a granada. But they are all getting too old to be trustyworthy.

Dod
01-09-08, 01:25 PM
A bigger 4wd Car. Otherwise I'd have gotten a Manta, dirt cheap and mad crack but rare and not ideal.

Spud, i know what you're saying about the Delta but how cool is it? And imagine it covered from top to toe in thick brown muck?

Dod
01-09-08, 01:27 PM
Ah I didnt even think of an XR4x4. That'd be the nuts and perfect for the job.

Loggy, I'm sold!!!

Sub 500 quid Sierra 4x4 and they're 40/60 power and if you did ditch it, it wouldnt damage the car cuz they're tanks!! Brilliant!!!

I had a Sierra Estate with a 2.8 V^ and a 4x4 set up and it was great. I remember sliding into a huge ditch once and towing it out with nothing more than a broken mirror and a few scores down the side.

LOL, I gave it a semi Thrash last night, now I have No functional Speedo, no Air Bags working, and all the Brake lining Warning lights including the Hand Brake (!!!) are showing up.

At a few points I briefly looked at the dash and thought the car had stalled with all the lights on. lol
