View Full Version : Concealing 6 x 9 's ?
Right, as mentioned, like a lot of others, i have a set-up whereby their are 2 6x9's in the parcel shelf.
At the moment, they have no covering or way of concealing them, i don't want to build a stealth shelf or mount them underneath, as a mate of mine has a good piece of material just covering over the shelf and not only does it look alright, it hides them well.
What material would you suggest to cover a parcel shelf with ?
Needs to be flexible obviously.
Cheers in advance,
Grant

I'd still recommend a stealth shelf mate, I've just made one myself, I personally have found that the speakers sound better (dunno if this is possible) also its the best way of hiding speakers. Mine only cost me a fiver for the MDF and then maplins do cheap acoustic cloth. about a tenner at the most altogether!!!

make sure if you go maplins (or anywhere else for that matter) it IS acoustically tansparent cloth NOT acoustic cloth
acoustically tansparent - lets sound waves pass though
acoustic cloth - muffles sound, clarity is lost, used for covering sub BOXES and pannels etc. like a thin carpet

Like Mike says, you want the sound to pass through not be deadened by ordinary acoustic cloth.
Still your best bet is to buy a proper shelf, the factory one will move/flex as the drivers cycle and distort the sound. At the very least strengthen it with some ply-wood. It's better than MDF, and lighter.

id disagree there - but thats from my opinion
MDF is what you get when you buy a pro shelf - so why not use the same?
although plywood is stronger more rigid etc, you cant screw to it very well - unless its a thikcer sheet and then itll be heavier than MDF anyway
i find MDF is good and with a rubber thing on either side of the parcel shelf it still lifts up with the boot. remember the weight guys!!!

i used ply and made a damn good job just screwed underneath the shelf- i got my carpet from halfords- i think its acoustically transparent coz when you hold it up to the light you can kinda see through it.

I'd definately say get a stealth shelf. I was a little sceptical about how much difference it would make and the only reason I bought one is because my original parcel shelf was broken so it seemed like a good idea.
I got mine from www.auto-acoustics.com I think is the URL?
Anyway it's made from 18mm MDF and conceals the speakers perfectly. It also sounds a lot better because it's so rigid (also still lifts up with the tailgate!).
They aren't cheap at ?100 or so but they do the job!

In my nova I had speakers in the normal shelf - with acoustic transparent cloth over the top of them... looked like a flat parcel shelf from outside the car - and the sound quality was not affected.
Never tried a stealth shelf - so couldn't comment.
