View Full Version : Nova GSi restoration

26-08-08, 10:41 PM
I've had this Nova since late 2005, and always had the intention of restoring it, but between one thing and another it was always left to the side.
Finally got my finger out in May time there and stripped it bare and left it in to get painted, then took the head staggers and went for a colour change!! It was originally Diamond Black as you can see, but I hadn't seen a decent red GSi about for a long long time, so took the bull by the horns and went for it!!
This is how I got it:

http://pic16.picturetrail.com/VOL636/4139357/8639574/118606010.jpg

And how it looks tonight!!
http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL233/6614628/12755817/331971656.jpg

Will get more decent pictures of it at the weekend when I get it home (if it's dry!!!!).
Have a brand new GSi kit gor it, skirts and all, genuine tailgate vinyl, so should look the business when it's built up again!!!

Cracking mate! Will be a following this. Are you going bog standard? Always wish id done that with mines.

amggsi
26-08-08, 10:50 PM
Yup, it's just standard flame red, and will more than likely be kept standard for the first while anyway.

Could be tempted to lower it, Sofstars and 45's in the future though!!! But just want to get it up and going for the time being!!!

did they use any clear coat? or just the red? You'll have to keep it polished!

amggsi

Yeah, it's laquered, didn't want any of that direct gloss nonsense!!!!!lol

It'll be kept polished all right, but then again it won't be driven too much, and kept garaged so wouldn't have had any fading problems anyway!

Yeah, but I can't get new stuff anywhere, and the one I took off wouldn't be in the greatest condition. Was thinking of trying to spray it black again, but I can't see that working!! You any ideas on where I can get a new one?

Anymore progress adrian?

amggsi
12-10-08, 10:48 PM
Spent far far too much time trying to tidy and sort out the original wiring loom in the car, and then threw the head up. There must have been about 6 different alarms fitted at one point, somes wires were cut, and just joined by stripping back the plastic, and wrapping the wires around each other! Finally decided on Thursday that enough was enough and started to look for a new loom. Got one sorted on Saturday evening, and after a 150 mile round trip, had it fitted within half an hour of getting home!!

Just cleaning at dashboard parts now, ready to be but into place again!!

Don't know what to do with it, part of me wants to keep it completely standard, and another part wants me to fit the Softstars and suspension I have in the shed, and add a set of twin 40's!! Always wanted to do it to a Nova, just love the noise of them!!!

very very sweet!

engine pics?

I can get you engine pictures if you want, but it's just sitting in a corner looking dirty and sorry for itself at the minute!!!!!

Look's lovely mate !! will look absolutley awesome when all built back up, if i was you i'd fit the lowered suspension and leave the Speedlines on, which in a way is more standard than a factory GSI eh, lol.

wilson_sri
19-10-08, 09:32 PM
Coming on nicely mate!

In my opinion i think you should go standard. 3 spokes with maybe a 40mm drop would be perfect!
Really been wishing i done that with mine now.

I've put the standard suspension back into my other black GSi, so it's going to be the standard one!!! It's more original anyway!!!lol

Can't get the sound deadening for the engine bay and a few other little bits and pieces on this one have persuaded me to modify it a bit, going to get a set of 40's for it too............

Ordered some of Ades B pillar vinyls for it too, just have to find someone close by who won't make a hash of fitting it which I'm likely to do!!!lol

Funnily enough I've got a pic of mine fresh out of the paint shop back in 2002 when it was painted, On the std suspension & speedlines. Those pics of yours reminded me of mine then.

amggsi

Haven't had a chance to get it out of the garage for any decent sort of pictures lately, so here are a few crappy phone pictures to let you see it's still there!!!

http://pic70.picturetrail.com/VOL1786/11756427/20882008/342140535.jpg

Have the back axle/brakes and suspension in now to stay (hopefully!), wiring sorted and 90% of the interior in.

Need to get me a set of pullers so I can get my steering wheel changed to the fresher one, and a proper GSi gearknob instead of the poverty spec one at the minute!

Once I get the B pillar vinyls the windows will be going back in, and then time to start to the engine! Going to be brave and attempt to put engine/box/sespension/brakes up in as one unit to lessen any chances of scraping the paintwork!!

Well got some of Ades B pillar vinyls and me and my uncle gave fitting them a go yesterday.

It was a very fiddly job (neither of us had ever attempted it before!), but I think it turned out well! I can now get the windows in, and then move onto getting the engine sorted!!

Well the advice will be no bother, if you need help I'll send you to my uncle, he did most of the hard work!!!!
Take your time would be the best advice though!

Have all the windows in now except the windscreen, don't fancy doing it myself incase I break it, and having bother finding someone local to take it on!!

Should be getting the T40's at the start of Jan, so the engine will be going in then, and that should be more or less it ready to MOT!!

Front windscreen is no harder than the rear quaters. Some string round the rubber and it'll just pop in. Better than paying autoglass £50!!

Well here are the picures of how it's sitting right now, very hard to get any sort of decent pictures in the garage!!

Not a big change from before, but have the doors all built back up again (fiddly job), window & central locking motors i are there and working, windows and surrounds are there, and you can see what Ades vinyls look like against the surrounds!

Started to put the cam etc in, but ended up splitting the engine so it's now getting a mini rebuild and the head ported and polished. Should hopefully have it all back together next week at some point, and my radiator should be here by then too so all systems go to get the donkey in!!!

Got a call on Tuesday to say that I could pick my engine up today, so got it fitted this evening. Have a bit of plumbing to do tomorrow, and then off to a local guy to get it wired up, and set up properly. Should be movable under it's own power next weekend all being well!!!:)

No bother, I get confused myself about what I have and don't have!!!lol

Today didn't really go as planned, had a new 4 branch manifold and stainless steel system ready to go on it, but they don't match.

So left the radiator etc out until I get that sorted as it'll make the job of changing the manifold again if needs be.lol

Also need the top hose for the radiator, I seem to have loads of 1.2 ones, but my GSi one has went walkies!!

Looks clean enough to me! I prefer the standard look.

I prefer the standard look too, was debating painting the head silver, but they were never like that from the factory, so that would just hav annoyed me! I'm not one for opening bonnets at shows anyway, as long as it all works!!!lol
Will get something sorted for the rocker cover though, just don't know what yet!!!

Just read through all of this, done a cracking job fella, not sure on flame red though, sorry, will see how it looks in a couple of years time, hoping to buy Gunnys GSi shell and am debating whether to keep it black or change the colour!

LEWI007
12-09-09, 07:44 PM
I would match the paint on the headcover and get a new 1.2 transfer made and make it look like mint condition original.

still an awesome car either way mate.

amggsi
12-09-09, 07:52 PM
Red should be OK in a few years time, it's laquered so shouldn't fade like an original Flame Red.

Was thinking of getting a "1.6 TWIN 40" transfer made for the rocker cover, as the injection part is a bit out of place now!!

LEWI007
12-09-09, 07:57 PM
That would be nice and original, id go for it mate.

B pillar vinyls were bought through here, great fit, but black rather than blue/grey!

Pictures of it "complete", needs a hell of a clean and a bit of a tidy up inside. Back onto standard 14's as it was too low for the Softstars - they were hitting off the wings on full lock. Will be raised up and Softstars back on at some point!

Cheers, can't remember what exhaust was what in the end, it's a genuine GM one that I have used so could be yours!
There is 185/60/14's on it, but I still think I'll be taking the 60mm kit out and putting in 40's and the Softstars.
