when the car is idling, you can tell that it is only running on 3 cylinders. so while the car was running, i pulled out the HT leads from teh distibutor cap to see which cylinder wasnt firing. its the cylinder nearest to the near/side wheel. so today i brought a new distributor cap, fitted it but it still only fires 3 cylinders. however, when i pull out a certain HT lead to a certain point, it starts firing the cylinder again. what could this problem be? i am thinking HT lead?

yep, you want a new lead. While your on you might aswell put a new set of plugs in

Sounds like it, have you checked the terminals/contact points for corrosion too?

Does sound like a faulty/knackered lead. Get another one and see!
