So ive had a nova for about 3 years now, and ive not done a single peice of work on it (yes im ashamed), after having a wheel bearing replaced this weekend to find the horrible whirring noise has not stopped ive decided i need to get my **** in gear and learn abit about my car.

Could someone please give me a basic list of what tools i may need and here to get them from? and also an idea of what type of jack, as i am absolutly clueless!!

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Go into Halfords and get yourself a 2ton Trolly Jack and a set of Axle Stands, also, get yourself a decent Halfords Spanner and Socket set. Expect to pay around £100 for it.

While you're in there, get yourself a Haynes Manual for the car as well, its basicially an instruction manual to dis assemble your car and re assemble it.
They Also have a recomended list of required tools for work on the car as well.

I know people who are just starting out may start to panic at the price of good tools and bits n bobs, but if you look after them they'll last a good few years and you'll never need to pay inflated garage prices ever again;)

Some mechanics gloves & a bench with a vice is fairly essential too IMO.

Its not cheap starting a tool kit. Begin with a ratchet socket & buy up a bar of sockets & deep reach sockets, ring spanners & screwdrivers etc.

If you're shopping at halfords, the halfords pro tools have a lifetime warranty ;).

The Hal-frauds pro stuff is really, you can get a set for about £150 which has 95% of the tools you'll need.

Halford's have got a offer on atm where you can save 15% too!

9 times out of 10 its a **** shop, the staff are idiots and it can be head wreaking if looking for something specific, but they're a 1 stop shop for the Sunday Afternoon Novice Mechanic.

£20 Argos toolkit is what i started with 10years ago, and still use now! Obviously I've added to that along the way with torque wrenches, grips, additional spanners etc. But it's certainly a good starting point!

I have to agree. The amount you could spend buying rubbish tools and replaceing them you may aswell buy one decent set.
