after reading Andy's troubles with changing his engine & getting put over a barrel by his insurers, I've been pondering something...

All early smallblocks (limit of my experience) have engine numbers stamped on top of the block face. if the engine has been reconditioned & the block gets skimmed, the engine number will disappear.

how would this affect things legally & from an insurance point of view???

Right the number down, then have the block decked...

Most engine numbers are hardly visible anyway due to rust/dirt/oil etc....

my point is if the engine no. was altered, what would happen? I know that some reconditioners used to put their own number on instead of the original.......

A friend came across this with his mini, when he spoke to the insurance company they asked for the engine number and he simply said, the engine has been reconditioned and has lost the number. Wasn't a problem apperantly - I swear it depends on the person on the end of the phone tho...

Nothing would happen IMO. Lets face it, novas arn't really the target of big ringing organisations lol

So long as your sensible and keep a record of the number (should be on the V5 anyway) then theres no problem.
