I know this is SUPER pikey, but I've got some IMO brilliant Technics speakers from a Hi-Fi kicking around.......

Does anyone know if a car stereo will drive them?

Cheers

Going to have to try it for free :P

if they are 4 ohms impedance they will work

back in the day, as a quick solution to some beats, i stuck some pioneer house speakers on the floor behind the front seats and rigged em up to the head unit.. they were decent, even one of my mates got in the car and said "whoah... u got a system in here have ya ?" i was like "hahah... nah, just rigged up some house speakers temporarily", he said "sh!t man.. sounds prety decent"
that was running off a not particularly good head unit too, 4x25 watter.

Most home speakers are 8ohm IIRC. however you could require them in series/parallel? or that might make it worse.. i cant remember, its been 13 years since i have a physics lesson!

Aye most are 8ohm or maybe 6ohm sometimes.

As said though they will run OK, just don't pump them to the point of distortion & clip the nutts off them.

What would be trick is to have a pair of tripods in the boot to mount them on in carparks etc.

Going to have to do it just for that idea.

Anyway, dug them out and they're 6 ohms rating. I need an ICE/Sound expert to explain to me what will happen if I fit them. I'm assuming they cant really damage anything apart from themselves.....am I correct?

Right, did it.

Was just as easy as wiring normal speakers in to be honest. However, they fill the boot :D and aren't particularly loud.
Assuming that the lack of volume is down to the increased resistance in the speakers over car speakers.
Its a pretty shameful headunit I was using too though.

And for some reason the CD changer I was using with the headunit has decided to stop playing anything so cant really show a video or anything.

EDIT: Working now, it didnt like any of the 3 CDs i had for it, went to get some more and it worked :P

Another thing that seems to have happened is the speakers have gone really quiet (playing through the tape deck.) It's not the speakers, its the head unit output really quiet. Maybe 1/3 of the volume available initially. Going to go and fiddle a bit more.

EDIT: Turns out it was the MP3 tape adaptor thing that was making it quiet, perhaps that's gone wrong now.

MP3 tape adapters will always have that effect. You're fine running speakers with a greater impedance as they draw less current. The difference in volume will be minimal, but they're not going to sound great trapped in the boot lol

They dont sound to bad to be honest, I dont think the fact the car is mostly stripped out helps mind.

Think I'll replace the dash speakers with some kenwoods to keep up quality wise with the hi-fi jobbies. Standards are struggling.

i had a pair of hi fi speakers (about two foot high) in the back of my first nova ti my dad told me to get rid of them. i thought they were alright, seatbelted in and all...

Right, Hi-fis are nicely tucked away behind the rear seats, going to put some door speakers in and take the wiring from the dash speakers to them. Will probably rewire the front end due to the longer length needed.

The dash speakers are such a pain in the **** I cant be bothered changing them, so one of them is missing but meh.
