whats the difference? i puzzled, is one ecotec?
they both are ecotec. but the xel head is a better head as standard. something to do with the ports. well so sbd said !
The C16 has the best head due to the port shape. X16 is next up. The XEL head is the same as the X14XE (the cams as standard are also the same as the 1.4).
If you are doing something like throttle bodies there won't be much between the XE and XEL.
Yes i thought the c16xe had the best head but SBD said that the x16xel has the best head for tunning. but yea the c16xe has a better head then the x16xe
i always thought it was that the xel head was better but has a ****e inlet manifold
yea that inlet on the xel are very very poor. and also on the xe. but the head itself it the best design. im looking now to try and show the diffrence but cant seem to find a pic of the xel head
Seems it's a matter of debate lol
I've got an X16XE on TB's so not overly fussed to be fair, the port shapes aren't that much different.
This is the port shape on the XE:

well here is the shape of the x16xel ports, and you cant see its a much better design

Interesting, I believe the C has cloverleaf shaped ports. I suppose the XEL offers better flow for big power being opened up ?
yep so thats the head you want. and because not mant people know that, you can get a x16xel head for pennys

Is the x16xel found on x14xe's then? I have a 1.4 16v but im looking to put a 1600 in, if i was to put my 1400 head on the 1600 block would that work? would it even be worth it?
No the 1.4 is a X14XE but the head and cams are the same part number as the X16XEL
The X16XEL is found in the Astra and Vectra.
If you were to use an XEL head you'd at a minimum want the cams from one of the other two 1.6 engines.

That aint a small block gasket. Looks like a 2L eco one to me.
As said, the xel has the best shaped ports(trianglular). But c16 ones are larger(which isn't always better)
Most x14xe's have the same head as x16xe's.
As for deciding on what engine, i wouldn't hold out for a certain engine, the basic engine is the same, so just get the best condition one you can. You can always swap inlets off different engines etc.
If your fitting a 1.6 16v, binning the std inlet is the first mod anyway, so having a different inlet isn't a big reason for not buying a particular engine.

It's many years since I've seen an XEL so couldn't remember the port shape. Thanks for clearing that up :thumb:
TBH the differences are very small, the main reason everyone says the C16 XE is better is due to the lack of immobiliser in the ECU so much easier to wire into a nova, not that the X's are difficult.
As said, if your fitting one youd be a fool not to bin any of the three inlets and fit something aftermarket.
erm dan that gasket is nothing to do with a c16xe/x16xe/x16xel lol. technicaly th ebest one to go for would be a x16xel out of an astra or vectra. they have longer looms which could help fitting in a nova. and the XEL head (triangular ports) is the best head out of em all as standard.
get the XEL and ditch the crap inlet, you'll have a better engine than the c16xe this way.
the imobiliser is not an issue at all with these engines just make sure you get the matching chip (from the key) transponder and ecu from the same car. wiring is exactly thre same as a c16xe except you have to wire in the transponder, which is 7wires if i remember correctly and is a piece of piss to do. I wouldnt disagree but the mk3 Astra Sport I drove was miserably slow... Embarassing to wear the Sport badge tbh.
100bhp in a heavy car like a mk3 astra is bound to be a bit dull to drive tbh
