im looking to buy a new exhaust system for my car. i really want a stainless backbox but a stainless system would be out of my budget. is it possible to 'mix and match' systems? any ideas?

just ring round till you find one with the same pipe diameter.....then if you save enough to finish the job, all of the bits should fit ok

if you want you can paint the exhaust with very high temp paint - this will give it some protection - not much though at the grit from the road will eventually chip it off.

Mix n match can work but speak to a small exhaust outfit to haggle a deal.

It also depends on what car you have - some exhausts can be expensive depending on what performance you want.
