i have a 15" pa speaker i got for helping out a local church i have wired it in to the boot and strapped it to the underside of my parcel shelf so no one can see it ;)
but this will not have a negative affect on the head-unit or the wires will it and also what kind of amp will i need to make it sound better could i wire it up to a car amp
cheers for your help
how is it being powered at the moment?

one of my rear speakers blew so i took the wires out of it and strapped the wires from the pa speaker and the car ones together and wrapped them in electrical tape
so it is being powered from the headunit amp

what is the impedence of the speaker? is its too high then it may blow the internal mosfets.

sorry mate you have lost me what info do you want from the speaker then i can go see for you
does it even work like that? is the sound quality very poor/quiet? if it's just like 10w from the head unit powering a speaker like that, i imagine it would barely move it.
it must be the wrong impedence also. you'd basically need an amp. but an amp for that set up would be for household use, therefore needing 240v not 12. Although I may be wrong. if youv'e got an amp to try it out with then it might be worth a go breifly. Start it at a low volume with no gain, and if it sounds bad quickly then disconnect it as you could damage the speaker or the amp if they aren't matched.

the speaker reads
500watts
12 db/oct
3.5khz
my headunit says it has 51w x 4 and it sounds ok even a bit of bass coming from it

it also has to little tweeters attached to it
is that 500w MAX or RMS do you know?

i would be guessing max to be honest mate
but i cant see a rms wattage on the speaker i would be guessing it would be on the good side of 100 tho
yeah 500w RMS is pretty damn high! i guess the only option is to wire it up to a say 150w amp and give it a go

well the speaker was free so if it blows it blows lol
its only in there because it gives a nice sound don't think i want to spend money on a amp for it i might as well spend money on a nice sub and some better speakers lol
500watts is not that much when you think about the areas pa speakers are designed for
but i guess they aren't designed for pumping out bass. if you want to project your voice over a few hundered people it's just right

well the speaker was free so if it blows it blows lol

Resistance etc; the speaker could be overworking the amp

it wont be compatable at all pa speakers are made for voices an not bass if u amp it it will blow an possibly take other things with it ide disconnect your rear speakers just run the fronts an save up an get sum new rears it will be cheaper in the long run u can get sum speakers for around 30 quid alot cheaper than replacing headunits (try halfords dare i say it)
