Havent done one so here it is!

Started life as a 1.4 SRi. Used to owned my a Novaload user, Freak. I kept the car pretty much as i bought it, fitted a backbox and meshed the front grill, painted the alloys. Used it in this state for a while, did a few sessions round Castle Combe, great fun!! I then got bored so took it off the road with the intention of building a C20XE to put in it and got abit carried away...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/nova01BIG.jpg

How it looked when i bought it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/TheCar.jpg

I had the wheels painted, added some side reps and that was about it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/C14SEenginebay01.jpg

The strip down starts!! Out with the old C14SE (which was a bloody good engine, made my mate in his saxo vtr look silly. Not hard to do i hear you say!)

There was alot of rust/rot within my engine bay, so first port of call was to remove the front panel and crossmember (what fun!!) and replace it. I also cut out the rust from the inner wings and pplated them up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/novafrontpanelold005.jpg

front panel off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/rustdrivers.jpg

Rot on the inner wings. This was all cut out and plated.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/castlecombesept2005002.jpg

I constructed a chassis stand, so as the car could be moved. I had removed all running gear.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/novafrontpanel001007-1.jpg

Front crossmember removed. I braced between the engine mounts and fitted a strut brace. This was more a precaution than anything.

I then set about grinding back all surfaces that needed welding. This included areas for the Harry Hockley plate kit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/novafrontpanel002007.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/novafrontpanel002006.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova3.jpg

My good mate Stu doing the welding. He works in a bodyshop, so his expertise were welcomed at this stage of the rebuild.

Pistol Pete
12-08-08, 11:47 AM
The bulkhead was also seam welded.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/novafrontpanel001006.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/novaenginebayprimer007.jpg

Once the cross member was welded and the engine bay was seam welded, i gave it a ll a good coat of primer. This rebuild was done in stages so didnt want rust to set in a ruin all my (our!!) hardwork.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0024.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0025-Copy.jpg

The front panel was then fitted and a trial fitment of the wings. They turned out to be crap! Pattern wings!

Some nice touches. I always liked breeze blue SR's.

I look forward to seeing it unfold.

Pistol Pete
12-08-08, 11:53 AM
I then bought myself a compressor and painted the engine bay to colour code it all!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0041-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0042.jpg

Nothing missed out on a lick of paint. The upper members, inner wings, wheel housings, the lot!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova003.jpg

The underneath of the car didnt go un-noticed! It probably will when it hits the road though:( Will have to construct some special mirrors!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/nova-strippedrear005.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/nova-strippedrear007.jpg

Firstly is attached a wire brush attachment to my angle grinder a cleaned it all up. Wasnt fussed about the removal of the underseal.

Pistol Pete
12-08-08, 11:56 AM
All fixtures and fittings were removed, then it all got a coat of primer. What a labour of love!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/undersideprimer02-1.jpg

Then i painted it all to match the rest!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0049.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0047.jpg

mmmm, freshly painted lovliness!!

Pistol Pete
12-08-08, 12:03 PM
I then set about getting the car ready for the paint shop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0044.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0043.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/Nova0022.jpg

Took out all the windows, windscreen (which cracked!) lights etc. Borrowed a mates electric DA and went for it!! Took no time at all to rub down. Will give it a final DA before it goes for paint.

Stupid really but looking back throughthis thread, doesnt look as thoughi have done an awful lot in the last 3, nearly 4 years!!! Trouble is i have never "just got on with it"!! Not long after i started the rebuild me and my g/f moved in together and that took up all my spare time and of couse, money:roll: .

I also got slightly sidetracked with my daily runners! Firstly had a Renault 19 16v, tidied that up swapped it for an E30 BMW 325, sold that bought a Cav GSi, tidied that up then sold it bought a Cally 16v off Ernie, tidied that up sold it.... you get the idea! Trouble is any money or time i had got took up with this! I then decided to buy a house with my g/f (even less money to do the Nova!) and do my bike test, something i had wanted to do for years. Which kind of brings us up to date! Passed my test august last year, was making some progress on the Nova. This summer was looking to get it painted and maybe engine in. But it was not to be...

Firstly my mum and dads garage caught fire, the Nova and all my tools, parts etc were in there not to mention my dads tools. This is what i was presented with...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/garagefire1.jpg

Luckily (well not really!) the fire was mainly in the roof. The car escaped bar some smoke damage. Trouble is all my interior, lights, engine parts etc were in the roof and subseqently got either melted of smoke damaged:( I know from the pic it doesnt look bad but it was. The whole roof had to be replaced as all the joists wre charcoal, what the fire didnt destroy the smoke did! My bumpers were just a plastic shape! My doorcards were, well, charcoal.

...But thanks to Lee H off here i managed to replace the majority of lost parts. So i intended to commence the rebuild throughout the summer, but...

I crashed my bike in June this year. Seriously! I hit a tractor whilst overtaking a car and the tractor. It turned right and i connected with it! A 2 week stay in hospital and multiple injuries (of which im still off work now!) hence why the rebuild will have to wait til after xmas at least:(

But im going to get it finished. I want to "do" the Nurburgring before im 30! I was 26 last week so ive got time!!

Sorry for blabbing, on ill get back to posting pics up!.....

I bought a mates Astra GTE16v for not alot of money. I kept the engine and gearbox plus a few other bits and broke the rest for spares.

I then set about stripping the engine, ready for a rebuild...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/C20XEstripdown-washed.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/C20XEstripdownstripped.jpg

Was good fun but turned out to be a pointless excercise as there was a nasty lip around the top of the block liners. I would have to either have it re sleeved or over bored which would cost money. Money i didnt really have. Luckily, Chip form MIG, had a short engine for sale so i snapped it up! I then bought a coscast head of Bert, had this breathed on by Gary from MIG, and my engine was coming together.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/frontseats.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/backseats.jpg

My interior. This lived after the fire as i left it in the car. Front seats were done when i bought the car, my mum finished the rear seats. I now have a GSi dash and door cards (cheers Lee H) to complete my interior.

Not many up to date pics as not alot has been done as of late. Will update soon as im up and about.

I usually just pop on from time to time but I'm off work ill at the mo so I've been coming on quite a bit.

Keep the updates coming! :)

Pistol Pete
08-10-08, 08:46 PM
Not much done lately. Just been aquiring parts. :D

Set of rear pop out windows
Blue XE Nova Samco hoses
Blue alloy single v bottom pulley
Polished rocker cover
Alloy header tank
Cool running stat

My first bit of work will be to remove the spare wheel well and weld it up with my new mig welder. Not before testing my skills on scrap first! I also need to go up north to Huddersfield and collect my dash, wings, headlights, etc (cheers Lee H) after my stuff got burnt in the fire:( ! Then finish the engine off so it can be dropped in after paint.

I can then complete the prep for paint then off to the bodyshop!!:D

All this will probably be december time, still not back to work or 100% fitness after my bike accident.:(

Looking good is your build so far Pete. A cracking bit of workmanship on the front end rebuild mate. I will be keeping an eye on it to see how your getting on :thumb:

Glad your making a recovery after your crash. Explains why your always on MIG or PNG :)

Cheers. Did abit on getting my engine finished this week. Will go back to my mums tomorrow, as the postman has been good to me this week;) ! Will get some pics and post them up!

Yeah, spending a fair bit of time on the forums. Has certainly given me fresh motivation to get the thing finished!!

First time I've read your WIP mate. Sorry to hear about the bad luck! Looks like it is coming together nicely now though :) Nice job on the painting mate, how did you do the underside, lay on your back with the gun?

Hopefully 2009 will be your and your Novas year bud!

Pistol Pete
15-10-08, 05:20 PM
Cheers. Did the underside by hand mate!!! Got some of those mini foam rollers and a brush and went for it!!! Not a bad finish and the coverage was quite good.

Ok, so the postman has been good to me the last few weeks. Got my polished rocker, some stainless bolts and a load of other nice bits. See page 2! Went to my mums today and made a start on getting my engine nearly finished.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0271.jpg

I started by modding my rocker cover, to do the breather mod. Probably not the way most have done it, but i have spares if it all goes wrong!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0272.jpg

This was the bit i was left with. Sanded down the rough edges and..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0273.jpg

..bolted it in.

I then fitted the new rubber gasket and bolted it down with my collection of stainless bolts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0275.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0274.jpg

I also fitted my alloy crank pulley, cool running stat, my tidied up dizzy, and dipstick holder along with one of my blue samco hoses. Rust on flywheel, water damage after the fire  :( will be cleaned off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0278.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0269.jpg

Mmmmm, shiney! Spark plug cover will have polished letters and be painted blue.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0276.jpg

The shell as it sits now...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0279.jpg

..it has got the rat look, not on purpose i must add. Water plus fire/smoke damage:(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0280.jpg

Thats all for this week. Need to get a few more tidy up tools then will commence engine tart up next week. :)

Hey Pete, i think i remember this car when you were on/in PVG, as your avatar was the same on there that you had on here till this week lol.

10-12-08, 06:57 PM
PS: what part is it you cut out from the breath plate to do the mod,lol i cant figure what part you cut out?! And I'm not 100% sure if i got this done when my engine was at Dar's, best ask him..

Pistol Pete
10-12-08, 07:08 PM
The end part that covers the outlet pipes. I binned the rest! Probably not the way most do it, but hey!!!

Ernie
11-12-08, 09:35 PM
The breather mod is spot on and the same as Dar did to mine.

Pistol Pete
19-02-09, 04:07 PM
Ok...been awhile since i have done any work or updating so...

Engine is now pretty much finished. Inlet manifold is on, brackets, dipstick etc...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0654.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0655.jpg

So have been sorting the shell ready for the bodyshop to paint it next month fingers crossed!! Today i butchered the rear n/s arch (i am no expert welder or bodywork artist, but am on a budget and sometimes this is the best way to learn. Alsothe sideskirt will cover any imperfections lol lol)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0646.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0647.jpg

Once cut out, found i had abit of rot in the inner arch aswell so sorte this, not a bad job if i do say so myself..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0649.jpg

Then tacked in the repair piece..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0650.jpg

Then welded it up and ground it back..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Astra%20Donor%20Car/C20XE%20Strip%20Down/IMGP0651.jpg

I then slopped some primer on it for now. Will give it a skim of filler before it goes for paint. Hoping to get alot more done in the next week or so. Will updated and upload pics as i do..

Did abit more today, but wasnt a good day  lol

Started on sorting my front end out. Wanted to have a mock fit up. Wish i hadnt bothered, it looked shocking!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0663.jpg

Holes appear to be in the wrong place for fitment of headlights and indicators.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0662.jpg

Gap between the door is shocking and uneven. Where the wing meets the top of the A post is massive aswell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0665.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0661.jpg

Looking at the above pic it doesnt look bad but in the flesh it is awful  I have put a thread in styling to ask some of you fellow mk2 owners to measure your cars and help me out lol PLEASE!! I work with new cars so fit and finish stands out a mile to me and i am also a fussy git when it comes to panel gaps!! Thread here..\/

http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1109215#post1109215

I then cut these in my B post..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0667.jpg

/\ These were not with out there problems either...cut the too big so some modifying was in order!! Everything now fits as it should.

Made a start on fitting the clips for my side skirts aswell but didnt get very far. Will get more next week. Going to try and keep some sort of momentum going now to get it finished before i go back to work in June.

Pistol Pete
26-02-09, 03:07 PM
Update: my front end fits!! Yay!!! Had to grind a load away on the headlight panel. This was stopping the wings from coming in and meeting the headlights. Have assembled it and fitted headlights and grill, and all looks ok. Will dis-assemble clean and paint the insides of the wings and refit and they can stay on now lol

Nothing major but a good day for me. More next week.

Well...few more jobs to do, then can go for paint. Once the car is away i can paint and tart up the other bits in the empty garage. When the car comes back, no stopping me. It can all be built back up and driven. HARD!!! Cant fookin wait!!!!

Get some pics up pete :thumb:

Of my front end?? Will take some pics next week. Going to make a real effort next week. Been abit down in the dumps and seriously unmotivated this week after a few things pissed me off...but hey ho!! Onwards and upwards. :thumb:

Pistol Pete

So did abit more tinkering in the garage today...

Finished taking out my sunroof as the masking tape has gone all nasty after it got damp in the garage fire last year...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0676.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0677.jpg

Horrible sticky residue all around the rubber/furry edge.
Started to clean it but then got bored!

Welded the hole up in my rear panel where the wires for the number plate light would have exit. Dont need this anymore. Lights will be else where.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0683.jpg

Gave it a skim of filer then primed it. Wasnt too fussed about how it looked as it will be painted and the bumper will cover it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0684.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0687.jpg

I then welded up the holes in my wings and fillered them. Also cleaned the insides as i will slap some hammerite on them before fitting.

First skim..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0685.jpg

Second skim..the lads at the bodyshop will finish these off to get them perfect. My bodywork skills are limited.

I then finished smoothing my grab rail..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0686.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0689.jpg

Filler primed. Will wet flat when dryed.

I then trimmed (read hacked and bashed fook out of!) my headlight panel as this was the cause of my poor fitment of wings.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0678.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0688.jpg

They now fit pretty much as Vauxhall intended!

That was about all for today. Then pushed it back in its bed. The silver thing is my cover, which ironically was purchased after the fire!! My seats are going to need a good clean!

i've been having the same problem this week as you did
(getting front wings/lights and grille to line up, after fitting a new front panel)

had to chop the bits of that stick up on each top corner

shame really all that hard work to fit it then butcher it with an angle grinder
good thread mate, keep up the great work :thumb:

I would like to think so, it was my intention.... But work situation isnt great. Spending nearly £1000 on a paintjob might not go down too well. lol trying to sort something though.

Pistol Pete
06-03-09, 04:01 PM
Went and did some more work today.

Sorted the rot on my n/s inner arch..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0692.jpg

Made some cardboard templates, then cut out metal. Found it easier to do it in 3 sections.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0693.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0694.jpg

And another small plate in the top of the arch. I then cleaned it all up slapped some sealer in there and primer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0695.jpg

Once the dealer has skinned off i will trim the lumpy bumpy bits. Yeah doesnt look pretty but once it is painted and the wheels are on and it is slammed on its nice new GAZ coilovers who will see!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0696.jpg

I then put a skim of filler where i had patched the outer arch. Left this till last because of the heat from welding the inner arch. Will tidy this up next week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0691.jpg

I then flatted and re primed my boot grab rail. Happy with it now.

Today was STOP...Hammer and Hammerite time!!! lol

Started sorting my wings...Hammerited the insides, more for protection than to look pretty.

Baking in the sun after 2 coats..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0711.jpg

I also touched up both upper members and the front panel after butchering it to get the wings fitted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0709.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0710.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0707.jpg

I also fitted my fancy nancy strut brace...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0706.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0701.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0700.jpg

Started fiddling with the fronts to get the mounts sorted..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0702.jpg

Fitted correctly? I have left this part off...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0703.jpg

I then sorted the rears. This meant Hammertime lol

Take one coilover..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0712.jpg

A selection of hammers and knocking tool..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0713.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0715.jpg

I did both sides. Scrapped off the sealer as this was just bouncing and preventing me from making the room needed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0716.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0722.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0721.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0718.jpg

It probably looks closer because of the shadows. I jacked up the beam and checked again.

I then removed the coilovers, dropped the beam and rubbed down the newly modded areas and more Hammerite was applied...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0726.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0725.jpg

Also painted my repaired rear inner arch..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0708.jpg

Whilst doing all this i couldnt help but notice this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0728.jpg

Which is being caused by the handbrake cable mounts on my rear beam..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0727.jpg

..are they in the wrong place??

All in all a productive day really. Next on the list is to fit the wings, check headlight/indicator fitment then last few jobs and off for paint!

lol you dont want to know! It was a labour of love. Car on stands, led on my back, took what seemed forever! I used mini foam rollers, primed and hammerite. About 2 coats of each. Same for the arches. Smooth blue is an almost spot on colour match so happy days....

I got a wire brush attatchment for my angle grinder. Used a wire brush for the hard to reach places. 2 coats should do it TBH. Its quite thick stuff. I was very generous when applying it. Allow good time to dry and you'll be on to a winner!

I've just put a set of poly exhaust bushes on mine and there a snug fit to say they least, but very ridged. Make sure your exhaust ain't touching anywhere, underneath as it will vibrate like a right barsteward. lol

Fecking pissed off! Fitted wings and bonnet today. Gaps looked good, minimal adjustment needed. Went to close the bonnet...no chance. Pins is miles away from the hole, thus confirming my slam panle is welded 10mm too far back! Great...best get a new one ordered and a fresh cutting disc on the grinder lol

Pics...

(centre section of my slam panel is removable, this shows how far it needs to move forward..)

25-03-09, 04:56 PM
There is quite a bit of adjustment on the bonnet pin or does the safety catch not line up with the other hole either?

Pistol Pete
25-03-09, 05:22 PM
Safety catch catches the front of the "square" hole if you understand??? Also the headlights are sat too far back, so the indicator lens to wing gap is uneven. Tight at the top and large at the bottom.

Bonnet slam panel ordered now anyways. Beevers FTW.

sounds good. im trying to do everything myself too. from what i keep getting told the prep is the hard/time cousuming part of a spray job. i was given a quite large compressor and a new spray gun so i will give mine a bash soon

Pistol Pete
30-03-09, 02:42 PM
No harm in having a go. I have spent the £££ on paint, activator, hardener, laquer etc, so dont really want to waste that money by cocking up the paintjob doing it DIY lol The key to a good finish is the prep. Ask any painter worth their salt, they will tell you this. Take your time, make sure everything is 100%.

Hopefully my front panel will arrive tomorrow so can crack on with the grinder/welder!

Today i r mostly going crazy with an angle grinder...

Removed my old mis aligned front panel, in readiness for fitment of a new one..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0842.jpg

My tool of choice..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0840.jpg

Removed the centre section (this was bolted in BTW..;) )

I then removed all the wings (that i had bolted in thinking they wouldnt be coming off again!!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0841.jpg

I then set about cutting out the rest. Found it easier to do it in parts..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0843.jpg

Until i was left with this..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0845.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0844.jpg

Pistol Pete
02-04-09, 04:21 PM
I then grinded the areas that will be welded and slotted in the new panel to see how it looked..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0846.jpg

I also made a bracket up..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0850.jpg

..to go here..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0852.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP0853.jpg

Chucked the headlights on. Will also fit the indicators and the wings (getting good at fitting these  lol ) and can position the front panel and tack in place so it fits as it should. I also welded up and filled the holes for where the mk1 grill would go.

Will do this next week more than likely. I have put a thread in styling with a request for some measurements...

Did abit today. Nothing major. Spent most of the day tidying the garage so my sister can get her StreetKa in there for a new roof next week.

Front end is still pissing me off, so turned my attention to paint prep. Where i had rubbed the car down, in places was bare metal. After the fire this had started to go rusty, so rubbed doen and etch primed to keep the metal cancer at bay. Rear end, roof and windscreen area done. Ran out of primer so will need some more. Still got the sides, doors and door appatures to do!

Update, my front end woes are over!!!

After cutting out my new panel, i bought another new one and mock fitted it. Got my mate who works in a bodyshop over on the bank holiday weekend and we got it fitted a ok! I am chuffed with the results...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1199.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1198.jpg

Gaps dont look great in the pics, but since these were taken we have fiddled abit more to get it looking good. Also the different colours and the old indicators dont help. We tacked it in place (well, once we fixed the MIG welder...all the welding i have previously done was without gas!!!!) and then i fully welded it in place.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1194.jpg

Had to make some plates for unde the headlights as when i cut the old panel off, i was not left with much to weld to! The slugs were ground down. All areas are now painted. I will be repainting my bay in the next few weeks. HAve spoke to the paint shop and i can take it htere soon as it is ready, so all hands to the pumps!

Cleaned my gun off ready to paint the bay..

Then broke out the welder and welded the tie bar mounts. Probably make no difference whatsoever but meh!

And lastly....i think this speaks for itself! Chuffed to have aquired these. Off to the painters then to the polishers...

Small update. Been doing the last few jobs ready for paint. Which is finally happening next friday! Woohoo cant wait.

Was abit peed as i had a chat with the paint shop dudes and when i told them the the engine bay was in Hammerite, they did the old sucking air through their teeth!!! It will react and cause pickleing witht eh primer...Nightmare. I had to get busy with the thinners and a wire brush...:( not good after all the time i spent preping and painting it. BUT i should have checked first i guess. Ah well, lesson learnt there..

Pics..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1827.jpg

One de Hammerited engine bay! Was abit paranoid about it reacting still so...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1871.jpg

Bought a 1L tin of Barcoat Isolator and fired up the compressor!! This is a sealer that will stop any reactions. Naff colour but it is only a sealer after all!I also made a bar for the front. Bolted it to the bumper bars. Dont fancy greasy hands all over my fresh paint so this can be used for pushing and pulling.

Prepped up the little bits for paint aswell..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1826.jpg

I then started priming the suspension bits that were not fitted to the car. I will do everything else once the garage is empty..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP1883.jpg

Thats about were i am right now. Next update should be a painted shell. Thats where the fun starts i guess!! Bring it on.

Looking good, bet you cant wait to have it finished finally.

From what ive seen theres noway to stop the coilovers getting covered in crap and seizing. Maybe a small amount of copper grease around the area where the adjusters are and then wirebrush it if you ever want to change the height.

Minor update. As the evenings have been good, and the misses is away with work in the week, i have been doing abit after work.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2352.jpg

Sorted my F20. Yes it is a clean one, but i can assure you it did NOT look like this a while back!! Been sat behind my parents shed since i took the engine out of the donor Astra GTE!!!! Thats a fair few years of grime to shift!! Gave it a minor rebuild. New gaskets, oil seals and a general check over. Vauxhall wanted nearly £15 for each gasket, ebay wanted £5.99 for 6 sheets of A4 gasket paper...hmmm ok then! DIY FTW! Gave the clutch arm a lick of paint aswell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2350.jpg

Stripped down the linkage, cleaned and regreased. Mount got a lick of paint aswell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2356.jpg

Sorted my brakes aswell. Cleaned them and painted them, new pads aswell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2355.jpg

Built them up and fitted them along with my Goodridge hoses.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2357.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2358.jpg

Rears got the same treatment. Will finish them in the week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2361.jpg

New bearings, hubs/discs aswell..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2362.jpg

Brake lines are now on the car. Not quite finished, but wont take long.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2359.jpg

Got a few more bits fitted aswell, after raping my mates old shell!! See the FS section for goodies that are FS!!! Shameless plug!

Heater motor, wpier jets and wiper linkage..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2354.jpg

Gave my wiper motor a lick of paint..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2353.jpg

Thats it really. Hopefully the next update will show the engine sat in the bay!!

Yeah lol just havent uploaded any pics.

Been a busy bee with it, but have had a few home based DIY projects to contend with aswell!!!

I have a deadline of september so i have something to work to!!

Yeah it should mate, or at least near to road worthy. Workload, social life (its summertime= lots of drinking sessions!!) and also the biggest reason is i am due to be a dad in september (hence the deadline!) so been sorting stuff out baby related aswell. Not wanting to throw in the towel and sell up because of the baby so other things have had to take priority. It WILL get finished trust me!!!

A few pics of what i have been doing. All the brake lines are done. Just need some fluid and bleeding. All cables are in the bay ready. Engine is ready. Just need a weekend to get it in. This will be a week saturday. Once this is in, i can seriously crack on!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2453.jpg

Rear calipers and discs all built up and fitted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2454.jpg

Handbrake cables and springs all sorted. Handbrake works a treat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2457.jpg

Lines all sorted. Chuffed with these.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2455.jpg

Exhaust all polished up. It was black with soot after the fire. Came up good. The centre section got the same treatment and fitted to the car.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2458.jpg

Single V pulley. Fitted to the engine. Along with a new alternator. Will get some pics of the engine this week. The last of my hoses arrived from Roose last week, so will get them fitted along with the loom and then i can drop the engine in.

I must say Pete im impressed, the wait looks like it going to be worth it, getting there slowly, and it's really coming on well... Wish i had a time and a garage to work in (the one i had has just been knocked down, the missis dad is redoing the hole garden etc) was just about to do some things in there on the MK1 ready for billing, will have to hope for good weather and do it at the olds on there drive now.

And congratulations on the baby mate, didn't know as Ive not spoke to you in a while..

Keep on it.

Engine finally went in today..And i just want to get one thing clear. I know alot of you go "in from the top" i dont give a toss...its my car so i did it how i wanted! Hmm..kay!

Empty bay awaiting Vauxhalls finest XE...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2491.jpg

Finishing touches added to the engine. Hoses, loom etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2492.jpg

Then the fun task of getting the engine off the stand!! Cue some chocking with wood and abit of panicing..on my part!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2493.jpg

But no need...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2494.jpg

Engine sat on the floor.

Gearbox on, and all ready to go.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2495.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2496.jpg

Firstly had to get the car high enough..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2497.jpg

higher still lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2498.jpg

Then slide one engine in and prepare for lift..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2499.jpg

After some strong man attempts and some swearing it went in! Not a scratch either..well 1 but not major or seen, so happy!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2500.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2502.jpg

All in. Mounts tight, shafts in, wheels on.

My third pair of hands having a fag break..WTF..crack on! lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2503.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2504.jpg

I can now really crack on! Ignore the strip type stance coilovers are just chucked on. Not setup. Yet.

Awesome work, silver gearbox would have looked nice. Where are you running the engine look thru? A hole in the bulk head looks very tidy...
