Small update. My mate Rich came over again today to help with the wiring loom side of things. Got a fair bit done. Really chuffed now, can see light at the end of the tunnel!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2598.jpg
The old loom coming out. The car was originally a SRi. These have intergrated looms so can be a PITA ti wire in. So i got a loom from pov spec Nova to make life easier.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2595.jpg
Seats out to get under the carpets. Rich hard at work!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2596.jpg
New loom laid out and checked.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2591.jpg
I also had a play with my coilovers. Looking low and mean. Can still go lower too!!!

Not much clearance!!!
Really pleased with the progress in the last 2-3 weeks. I have 2 weeks off work starting friday. Fingers crossed i can get the exhaust finished, water hoses on, brakes bled and a few other jobs. Then get the loom finished and turn the key and hear it purr!!! Like a kid at christmas!!! Cant wait!
Sh(t me at all that wiring.. Why is it all un taped? Good work tho dude, comming together very well. Nice and low!

lol not seen a wiring loom before??!! I had to unravel it to make sense of it all. In the end i just decided to rip it all out and start again! Hence the new loom.
Looking good cant wait to see it done

I have, luckily none unwrapped like that. Cause funk that.
TBH that loom looks like heaven to me.
Anyway, Nova looks amazing with the shiney paint and the wheels, with the tyres around the wrong way :p
Pistol Pete
19-07-10, 06:26 PM
lol they are the old wheels. New Porsche ones are not ready yet!

Not a major update..
My 2 week shutdown started on the 26th July. Great i thought 2 weeks on Nova time. WRONG!! Had a major DIY session all of last week so only got a few jobs done this week!
Got the exhaust manifold sorted..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2603.jpg
Standard XE manifold doesnt line up with my Magnex. So, i had to mod it to fit.
So after cutting, grinding, swearing, cutting etc....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2607.jpg
....i was left with this. Quite chuffed with it really. Welding doesnt look great, but once it was all ground back, looked fine.
New position for lambda.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2608.jpg
Sealed it best i could na dfired some air in via the compressor to check for leaks. None! Woohoo!
I then painted with BBQ paint and wrapped it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2611.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2614.jpg
I then fitted it. Pleased to report it all fits ok! Will get a pic tomorrow.
Also sorted my air filter and intake hose. Sorted my fuel lines. And a few other little jobs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/IMGP2609.jpg
All i need to sort now is, coolant hoses (on order from Roose) put some engien oil/gearbox oil in and bleed the brakes. My mate Rich needs to finish the wiring, then a serious milestone of starting it!! The end is in sight!

Looks good as ever dude.
What is the magnex system designed for? GTE??
Im in the process now for the track car, and SBD prices seem steep for a manifold, to then butchure it lol
Pistol Pete
03-08-10, 09:42 PM
Magnex is for err, pass!! mk2 fitment. It was an SRi originally, so GSI?

WOOP WOOP......:d SHE RUNS!!!!
Few little teething problems, oil cooler pipes are weeping slightly, wiring re: the Clifford needs sorting. lol had to wire the fuel pump relay directly from the battery!
But she runs. Massive milestone reached. After well over 6 years of work. Chuffed. Was super tap tap tappy at first but started to go quiet once it warmed up. Then it coughed and spluttered and cut out :(
No problem. Only had a dribble of fuel in the garage. Will get some more fuel, sort the oil leak and wiring and give her a proper run. Bleed the brakes and have a test drive round the close. Might have to warn the neighbours!!
Pics and vid (from my iphone so sh1t quality) to follow shortly.
Must be a nice feeling after 6 years, nice one

Why have you wired in the x5 plug?>

Well pleased for you pete, I remember this when it was a project back in the PVG days lol lol
Nice to see it nearly finished.

Fuel pump relay.
The round plug? lol thats needed to make it work!!!
Looks good.
Along the same lines as benn is thinking id move the fuel pump relay and move the engine loom to between the bulkhead/turret if its possible aswell as moving the car loom section to over the top of the wiper motor as iirc that looks slighty better.
What is the round plug for anyway?
Pistol Pete
01-09-10, 09:35 PM
Too late. Its all wired in and running now. And TBH i CBA moving it all and it doesnt bother me that much!!
The round plug is needed to connect the engine into the original Nova loom.
Pistol Pete
18-09-10, 06:08 PM
Bit of a set back today. After getting the engine running, it was very lumpy. Changed a few of the known problem sensors, dizzy, arm etc...still no good.
Thought maybe it needed a good run to sort the lifters out. Tried again today, would not fire at all. Check the compression...no compression on no3 cylinder. Took the cam cover off, the lifter on the inlet side would move freely up and down under the cam lobe. Oh dear...
Camshaft off, lifter out, wobbly spring....broken valve. ****ing gutted TBH.
Took the head off, luckily the valve stayed in the collet and didnt drop into the cylinder. Its marked the piston but i can get away with that. Will sort parts and rebuild this week.

Yeah i know. Just ****ed off. Had it in running, was starting to near the end (after nearly 8 years. Any longest ever rebuild gen lol), then this.

Gutted for you Pete........ trust me when I say I do know how you feel!
Nick.
Bad luck dude, not to bad to fix tho. But time comsuming.
Re the x5 plug, you dont the plug as you can join all the wiring in the foot well, looks much better. Not being rude to you, but the x5 plug in therei s normals seen as a bodge.
Pistol Pete
19-09-10, 03:38 PM
Why is it a bodge lol it comes on the standard loom ffs...
Anyway..pic of offending item.

Cheers. Only comfort i can take really, is that it was on tick over RPMs, and that the rest of the valve didnt drop out!
corsakid
19-09-10, 03:49 PM
I dont consider it a bodge either! , gutted about the valve!
Why is it a bodge lol it comes on the standard loom ffs...
Cutting a crimping all the wires, when you can just solder them all nicely away in the foot well, but ok.
Do you know what made the valve snap? Dont think i've seen one break..
corsakid
19-09-10, 04:25 PM
Cutting a crimping all the wires, when you can just solder them all nicely away in the foot well, but ok.
So when you want/have to remove engine rather than just unplugging the loom from the car you have to either cut the wires in the footwell or remove the engine loom and starter loom from the engine, good logic! Ffs
Pistol Pete
19-09-10, 05:15 PM
Were the valves new?
No. They are the ones that came in the head when i bought it. When i had the head worked, they all come out and were deemed ok.
Do you know what made the valve snap? Dont think i've seen one break..
No idea TBH. Its right at the tip as the pic shows. I wonder if when i primed the engine, i didnt do it for long enough?? The lifter jammed, making the valve stay open??
Did you turn it over till the oil pressure light when off?
Pistol Pete
19-09-10, 10:12 PM
Yep. No offence but i have spent a fair bit on the car and i wasnt about to rush/bodge it at the last crucial moment! Which is why i am even more cheesed off! Took my time, did it all right.
No no, dont get me wrong i didn't mean that. Just when you said primed the engine as long s the pressure was up everything should have been filled with oil.
So when you want/have to remove engine rather than just unplugging the loom from the car you have to either cut the wires in the footwell or remove the engine loom and starter loom from the engine, good logic! Ffs
No, you use the nova starting/charging loom. Which is 3wires to remove when you remove the engine.
I doubt it was a oil problem, more likly just a dodgy valve
Pistol Pete
20-09-10, 09:40 PM
I doubt it was a oil problem, more likly just a dodgy valve
Thats what i reckon. The bloke that did the head work was recommended and seemed an ok guy, so i am confident he would have said if one was dodgy.
And TBH the head was sat around for a while. Just one of those things.
My dad is sorting the parts for me tomorrow, as i wont get a chance to get them before the weekend. Sooner i get the parts sooner it gets rebuilt!
Broken bits..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Pete_58/Nova/DSCF0824.jpg
Mark on the top of the piston. Can get away with that, thankfully!!

as stated could have been much worse than what it is!! at least your not having to change the piston!!! could have been allot more expensive!!

Pretty pointless update, but...
Rebuilt the engine friday. Started first time, no tappet noise. Sounds sweet as a nut. Got that nice XE rasp when blipping the throttle. Chuffed to bits. Will crack on this week.
That is all!!

03-10-10, 08:34 PM
That noise is such a relief when you have had problems previously isnt it :)
Still a good update mate, nice to hear its all gone back together right this time :)

16-10-10, 06:10 PM
Update...not much though. Again!
Now running sweet. All gears can be engaged. Celebrated by driving off and on the drive lol The neighbours must really love me now!
Started sorting my interior. Had to construct some bars for the roof lining. Much love to bazil for his thread. Helped me massivley. Will hopefully get that in next week. Also washed all my glass and rubbers ready to fit them. Soon as thats done, just bumpers then sort the tracking to a certain degree then might get an MOT!!!

Had a smashing time today!! Started to refit some of the glass. Cleaned all the rubbers, windows all ready to go back in.
Started with the rear window. All was going well, until i touched the seal on one of the corners. Bang! Shattered. Bugger lol
Gave up on that.
Sorted my Manta mirrors and CF base plates. Managed to sort that without any cockups!!
Pics in a mo.
What did you touch the screen with? I had hitting mine very hard with my palm yesterday and it was ok.

17-10-10, 08:53 PM
My hand!! I dont think the seal was properly in, so the glass was flexed. Ah well, not exactly rare!!

Update. No pics yet. On my phone. Will sort some.
Got the front doors all built up. Glass, grey surrounds, CF bases for my mirrors aswell!
Managed to hunt down some material, so will be speaking nice to mother for some sewing skills!! Got the metal fro B&Q to make the 2 rods.
After thats in, rear opening windows need to be sorted and front windscreen. Will be asking my mate (who works for Autoglass!!) to do this after my rear window fail! Also its a heated screen so no room for error.
A stealth last minute bid on ebay saw me the owner of some GSi bumpers. So they are off to be painted along with my skirts.
Wheels are being stripped and sorted. Then i need to sort my tracking so i can drive it for an MOT.
Fingers crossed i get all this done before crimbo. Then come new year a few finishing touches and i'll be able to show it off!!!

IMO looks bloody ace! My dad helped me to fit it. Just need to sort the holes for the sun visors, sunroof handle and interior light. Then rubbers for the windows and door seals.
Gave all the plastics and clips a clean aswell as after the fire they were covered in a horrible black greasy slime.

Did you put the brace bars in yours, as if you have seen brucers GTE let, hes just done one, and with them braces in its loads better/essayer etc.
Looks alright tho dude, rather you lol
So what the plan for the wheels?
Scott
Pistol Pete
01-03-11, 08:39 PM
Aye, got the bars in it. All made!! Rep goes to bazil as he did a thread in articles. Plan for the wheels...once glass etc is in, back on axle stands and refurb of the current alloys. Cant afford the rubber and adaptors for the Porker rims right now. They will have to wait.

Got the 2 bars as required. Because its made from material it was easier to force it to shape around the door and boot trim edges.
Just used good old Bostick glue and a ****e load of the office bulldog clip things.

Got the windscreen in yesterday, and the tailgate window. Also made a start on the rear windows.
Roof lining is now 100% completed. Put the sun visors and interior light in. Just need to fix the rear view mirror.
Just need to finish the rear windows and it is then water tight!! Which is a good thing as it could do with abit of a clean TBH lol
My target of April 9th to be at Castle Coomb is 4 weeks away and i am not that confident in making it TBH. But i will try!
Will get some pics up soon.
Hope its at Combe, i'll have a lookie.

Did a little yesterday. I need to glue the metal tabs onto the glass for my opening rear windows. Being the obsessive person i am, i couldnt just stick them on. So....i bought some glass glue and got some Araldite and carried out a little test with 2 bits of metal and a scrap piece of glass. I will check them today to see which has stuck better!!
Few pics of the bits done on the inside..

Potential FS thread coming soon!!! lol
I joke about it, but i have a list here!!!
In all seriousness, i just ran out of time. lol and money. Plain and simple. Got an 8 month old, which takes up alot of time and at easter i fitted a new kitchen (still got few finishing touches to do) which cost a fair bit.
I have just not worried about it TBH. Its nearly done, just the fiddly crap that is holding me up.
Might make Billing, but i am not setting any dates as that failed last time and caused me no end of grief!
Roll on 2012!!

Holy cow...dust off the cobwebs lol
Got a few bits done at the weekend.
Mainly dash related. Main dash is now back in, had to wire in my VX220 clocks correctly (again!) and also my speedo signal PCB.
Also cobbled up some brackets and a surround so it kind of looks the part.

With regards to getting this finished, well it wont be this side of crimbo! CBA to rush it. I intend to do it as and when.
Good going - getting there slowly! ;-)
I would paint the chequerplate matt black...
Pistol Pete
01-09-11, 09:46 AM
The first attempt (lol) i did paint it, but it looked odd against the binacle. Hmmm, will see. Its not hard to take apart and paint it.
Looks like your building it at my speed lol better to take your time and get right imo
Without sounding like a tard or offending you the dial surrounds look out of place imo, get a bit of carbon in there or black plastic ?
Apart from that small detail looks stunning
Pistol Pete
01-09-11, 08:36 PM

My mate (Rich) helped me fit the engine. Its Rich's garage and he is doing the MOT. He will also write a letter with the engine number and that it is to a satisfactory condition. lol and so it should, he used to do engine conversions for a living!!
This along with all the other docs should see me right.
I ment like i did which was fit my own and just fillthe V5 out and send off...
Pistol Pete
03-03-12, 12:05 PM
lol No.
How long ago did you change your V5?
Now you need evidence. I tried to fill out the new number and send the V5 back. Got it returned with a letter.
Yep, mine got returned with a letter, but I knew an mot tester that has his own company doing rally car prep work so he did the mot, checked it over and for a few quid he wrote a letter with his company name saying it was fitted properly/ safely and that it had bigger brakes and suspension to cope with it.

MOT today and she passed. Few issues lol on the way there found out along the dual carrigeway that i only had 4 gears and a seriously high idle!!! Nursed it there in 4th. At 55mph!!
Once at my mates, got it up on the ramp and adjusted the linkage. And sorted the tracking as that was way out.
All sorted. Nope...went to oull out of my mates gargae....in third. lol i now have 1st where reverse should be, no second and now i have 5th. More adjustment needed.
But on the whole, it runs sweet, and once the linkage is sorted let the fun begin.

Weeping oil from somewhere so just ordered an 8v baffle plate. (any gen on the tab bending mod thats needed) Job for this week. And filter change.
Also leaking gearbox oil lol but thats my own stupid impatiance!! Forgot to put the bung back in after adjusting the linkage.
Done 4 of them, never bent a tab yet.

This is why you have to bend them,
Done 4 of them, never bent a tab yet.

This is more then likely why you have not, lol not ALL part's can and will touch ARP's
dont forget the 8v bolts aswell pete
You can use the 8v bolts, or two washers per bolt worked quite well for me..
This is more then likely why you have not, lol not ALL part's can and will touch ARP's
No, i know why you have too. But i've never had to bend one, nor out of the people i know who have fitted them have had to either.(gm or non gm)
And you want m6x20 bolts.(correct size) If you dont use the 8v ones.
The 8v bolts for what they cost, look prettier and are clean. But then im just a bummer like that lol

The VX220 one works but reads in reverse. Had about £30 in the tank and it said refill. So after burning some fuel it would read 24l or 17l etc. lol so i had no idea! I guess i could have put a resistor in the circuit? Or found a way of getting the signal....but i fail massively at electrics! So this will have to do.
Aye, come on over and get some pics. Be good to put a name to the face!

Got round to fitting the side skirts yesterday. Well, one side lol
Didnt have them as standard, so no studs for the white clips. Just tiger seal them on i thought. Not enough surface for the sealant to adhere to. Had to figure out a way to fit the clips in the right place!
Cue me doing my usual measure 20 thousand times, various methods to check etc etc lol
Once i was happy i could drill holes in my nice fresh paint work!!
I will post a thread in the articles section with all my measurements. Hopefully it will make it easier for some of you.
Pics.... (off my phone. Didnt anticipate getting this far so didnt have my camera with me!)

Done!

And fitted! G clamp is to hold the upper part of the fin. Had to tiger seal this part. lol @ my colour coded plate!!!
Nice work on the skirts dude.
D'oh I was hoping the clips would be possible to tigerseal on - just not enough of it touching the bodywork to stick on well then? Nice work, measurements will be a useful addition to the Articles section
Top drawer as always Pete, very nice.

That was kind of my original plan. I am awaiting the confirmation of my thread. When i do the other side i will add more measurements.

The single wiper, mirrors and skirts really do suit the look of the car. Very different without being to far away from original so a thumbs up from me on that!
And I thin rhe bay looks great, love the filter and rocker cover. ad the nice touches like the hoses set it off to :)

Brilliant Pete, it's looking awesome
It does indeed look very tasty. The whole package looks unique. I'd park the wiper a bit further down though

Oh dear...its broken!!
Got a heavy misfire/hesitation under load. Will have to begin the investigation. Plugs, leads, dizzy and arm are all new. Loom to the AFM is abit iffy so this will be my first port of call.
Uh oh thats not good, im still enjoying trouble free abuse use of mine lol

I think it felt left out....my mates evo has lunched its headgasket, my other mates Porsche has some seriously iffy brakes and the steering locks on randomly!!
Ah well, out with the spanners and tools and get it fixed.

Very nice that, it reminds me of one we built years ago in the same colour!
Good to see it is still alive and my interior lives on :thumb: (I stitched the entire front seats by hand- not machine.....lol)

It lives on!! Very well!
Did abit of fetteling the other day...its amazing what a difference a few clean earths and loom plugs can achieve! Idle speed is now as it should be, rev counter has lost the hunting but it shoots round to the stop above 4k lol and the lumpy running has disappeared.
Thats why I love these engines - as long as they are looked after any 'problems' can usually be sorted in minutes!

Will be wrapped up until next year now!

I haven't seen this all finished til now, and it looks bloody great. Really impressive, last pics of it I saw were stripped down...

Well, this still exists. Will be taxing it and insuring it again soon. Looking to get some serious mileage on it this year with a view to stripping it over the next winter.
Stripping down to sell????!!!!
Or rebuild?

Sorry, that didnt really read right!
Have contemplated selling it. Having kids and plenty of DIY to do i dont really have time to work on it/use it.
But i have considered stripping it (seats interior etc) fitting a cage and buckets and giving it abuse. Might be more inclined to use it then. Also because i keep it at my mums i forget i have it some times! Ill see how the land lies later in the year!
