Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as alternator, power steering, and AC compressor. Thus the prefix "brake" refers to where the power is measured: at the engine's output shaft
Wiki explanation at it's finest lol
isn't google a wonderful thing, wisewood? lol

did i or did i not answer the question?
That is the reason. I asked this very question to someone ages ago - and got a similar answer.
My actual question was why is a boat engine measured in HP while a car is BHP. The explaination defined the difference. :-p
brake horsepower DOES include alternator/water pump/AC losses etc. but not the gearbox.
^ i though that? All thats dis-counted is transmission loss. (gearbox, prop, rear diff if applicable etc)
eg in order to make 250bhp at the flywheel a supercharger requires 30hp to compress the air, so in reality the crank power is actually 280bhp
So why are modern cars measured in PS? EG the Mondeo TDCi 130 is 130PS and about 127BHP?
PS is a metric hp that is a halfway between BHP and KW.... keeps global markets happy
