Well as you all should know by now I can't sit still for 5 minutes when it comes to doing projects.

My good lady bought this 5 1/2 years ago from a contact of mine. £250 1 lady owner from new and only 27k. Well now with 70k+ of mileometers and some great motoring it was looking a bit sorry for it's self.

I've put off and put off doing it as she needs a car but with the summer holidays

When we got it

A bit of a hoover later and some GSI 3 spokes

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/100_1290.jpg

That lasted for a few months when Billing came about and I scored for a set of 3 alloys brand nw for next to nothing, and ebay brought about a set of lowering springs (back in the day when ebay was cheap and 90% of the people on here hadnt heard of it)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/104_6053.jpg

Not bad, but like I say it has got a bit tatty recently, kids took a fancy to it a while back with a set of keys, luckily the kids have grown up and now have cars of there own which I will return the favor on if they look it now. It hasnt been touched for a while so should be ok.

Managed to find a GSI trim 12 months ago, now more or less all fited. But lack of some 60/40 seat brackets and not happy with a bodge job of having the seats in with no middle support I had this done

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1010334.jpg

Thats how it has stayed until Sunday evening.

Poke Poke in a bt rusty bits, that had previously had a porr repair revealed this

The reason behind fitting the 1/4 was basicly for a few reasons, Keeps the shell more how it should be done, less work in my opinion, only 3 areas to sort out with filler rather than loosing the shape of the 1/4 and spending ages sorting the lines out sanding.

The finished result will resemble something like this, plus point being that for future use it has no sunroof

looks like your doing a good job there mate!

where did you get the full rear wing panel from?
and was it a good price?

of rebuilding it and need to find both rear wing panels.

any help would be great.

and can i allso borrow your mate lol

The 1/4 I got from a lad on here who I soldit to, he even got a profit out of me. He has the other side aswell, I may be getting that from him for to keep safe. You can get non gen panels for a fraction of what I paid for this one but im unsure on the quality of fit. I didnt want to take no chances.

Fitting the full panel I felt was work the effort, its probably easier than doing a arch repair properly, and only 3 areas to fill, one of which the areas is hidden behind the skirts

7ova
09-08-08, 10:43 PM
i dont think the after market panels
have the rear light mounting points
the window surround
part of the cil
and part of the b post
like the gm panels have

theres alot more work fitting a copy.
if you dont need other n/s panel
is there any chance i could have his name?

Hadrian list the panel and it comes in the same size as I fitted

http://hadrian.dominohosting.biz/hadrian/hcpdb01.nsf/PartNoImage/62-20-500/$FILE/62-20-500.gif?OpenElement

The only area that'd be hard to fit would be the lines up the c pillar but even with a genuine it isn't easy.

Hadrian panels are here

Hadrian panels dont list prices but these guys do

Update!!

Car went for paint on Tuesday. before it went spent ages lining up the front panels to check they all fit. Suprisingly the fit was almost perfect. Almost as good as factory! Not bad considering one wing is not genuine! Sadly it all had to be removed to paint them off the car for all the shuts etc.

Called past the bodyshop this morning, car is doing well, here is some pics

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020530.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020531.jpg

Note the useage of the finiest page 3 material!

smallest of imperfections being seen to

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020535.jpg

Before the car went in I decided to get my hands on some of these babys

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P150808_1730.jpg

The proper rivets to make the little lugs on the sills for the side skirt clips, drilled and fitted before paint so should be ok no drilling the fresh paint and exposing the bare metal. Novas rust easy enough as it is without helping them with bare metal

Brand new front bumper, soon to be colour coded

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020540.jpg

Also don't know why it came to me but I remembered that I had sold an old mate a proper GSI bumper, so quick text later and this was dropped off for me and cash was exchanged. Not a great deal of differnce, probably not even worth it but it has a slight exhaust cut out on them

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020537.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020539.jpg

These pics are from this morning. I called back late on tonight to find that some of it is now in high build primer and is looking well!

Shouldnt be long now!

I've also ordered some nice stainless nuts and bolts etc for it to keep it nice and easy to work on. Also got some new track rod ends and bottom arms coming .

Fot the interior i've had all that in the bath! It came to mind about what Riggy did with his side skirts and I thought I'd give it ago, it was unreal the muck that came off them after a scrub. Retreated them all to a coat of megs ready to go back in all clean. Should be a nice clean job to do when the car is bacl.

Parts still to source are a aerial of some kind, halfords finest roof tip aerial I feel? And a new screen as the old one has a chip and I may aswell replace it while its out. Cant grumble at £50 for a new tint top? Unless anyone can suggest any cheaper?

Riggy

Nice project.

My friend had one identical to that back in about 98. It ended up with an E16SE, Red bucket seats & 16v brakes & Courtenay deCarbon suspension.

I love the colour of them. Its nice to see one again, though I'm a little sorry to see it being GSi'd.

i was scrolling through them pages n thought dam that gsi looks like mine, took me a minute to relise it was lol.
never used to like the colour of mine but i love it now, my favourite colour.
was it a pain to fill the quaters were they go up the b and c pillar as they have the groves in which id imagine to be a pain espacially once been mig welded as it builds up quite high.

The colour is my fav part of it, love the colour, the lads in the paint shop keep saying what colour? Am I sure I want the same colour as they can do a colour change for only a litle more. But I don't see the point, maybe silk violet? But then I relise how daft I am for thinking it  :D

The groves we got tired of, we got them almost perfect then left final bits for the bodyshop to finish, fresh eyes on the job and all that jazz. The weld we ground back so it wasnt a major issue

Spoke to the bodyshop today, all being well the car should be back for the weekend! Then I'm off Sunday, Monday, Tuesday to get it built back up.

Been out tonight grafting in the garage tonight, started with one old petrol tank, bit surface rust, 20mins with a wire wheel (yes all the fuel is out) and hey presto, gave it a quick coat of primer and then i've coated it in stone chip that can be paint so i'll stick a quick coat of paint on it tomorrow,

pics of the tank before

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020541.jpg

and a coat of primer

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020543.jpg

didnt get none of it after, will try tomorrow!

forgot about having these at the back of the garage, GSI anti roll bar and thicker tie bars, may clean them up and fit them?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020547.jpg

main progress tonight has been this,

take one of these

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020548.jpg

trim down a calibra door handle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020549.jpg

bit of fine tuning

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020550.jpg

screw in place

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020551.jpg

mount switch to get angle right and ensure the depth is deep enough so the switch doesnt hang out the back

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020552.jpg

bit of this

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020553.jpg

taking shape

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020554.jpg

Trial fit to car, although this is in mine it is for the SX

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020557.jpg

not 100% happy after looking at the pic but we'll see when its done

bit more rubbing down and a skim of filler, painted it satin black to see how it'll look

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020558.jpg

finished result may be trimed in black vynal or similar i think, dare I say possibly flocked?

Me and Geordie Chris have also sorted the wiring for the mirrors, just need ot make a loom when we get the car back, all easy enough tbh. The switch holder has also gone to a mate who has some bumper texture paint who says he'll finish it and spray it so it should come out textured and look almost original finish, here's hoping! Major update folks,

I had planned to get the car back for the bank holiday weekend, it nearly didnt go to plan, rain on the friday meant the bodyshop wouldnt allow me to take the car lol and he was at a wedding on Saturday so wasnt opening up. A bit of sweet talking later, and one of his guys was going to open up and let me get the car. So while I was at work saturday my mate picked it up.

This is what greeted me when I got home

Collected some GSI skirts from Mathew172 this morning, showers prevented getting the car almost finished cosmeticly today but I still got the glass in, windscreen is must taped in over night for a bit of security so the wind doesnt get under it and blow it out. Also keeps it water proof ish

rear shot, complete with GSI boot decal, still undecided on it with the colour, fancying a plain boot with later spec badges like my old black GSI

Not had a great deal of time lately to update this due to working non stop on it to get it ready for the wife going back to work. So here is what i've been upto for the last week or so

finished off the back seat by fitting the base

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020698.jpg

Then set about on the underneath. Wire brush on all the little bits of flakey rust. then a bit rust treatment and some spray on stonechip. Went for black but it is paintable for future possibilities of colour coding, highly unlikely for a daily driver mind.

one seat in the front

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/novacabrio/K264/P1020708.jpg

Find a good bodyshop and pay the money and ther eis no reason why not. We did the paneling work but if you start with a tidy enough shell then it isnt needed. The paint job only cost me £600!

I'm a little Pissed off as the seller (very well know on here) said that all 4 are round and no issuses, but one is buckled. It is still useable on the rear for now but why say they are fine when they aren't. I noticed slight damage in the pics but assumed it was just bad curbing and could be sorted, how ever the edge is square!

Damage can be seen n picture 2 at about 4 o'clock on the wheel. I was also told that 3 tyres are mint and 1 is needing replaced. :D Yes 3 tyres tread is mint but 1 of the 3 has bad damage on the sidewall and will need to be replaced before I put them on a car my wife drives with my 16 month old son in. Update on the wheels, I have found 2 extra wheels which I'm waiting on getting checked before paying for this time. Yup, always liked softstars. I can't recall seeing a grey GSI with them on.

Chris, you need to see the wheels in the light, its a very light tint, lighter than Riggys pic

Thats why i'd have taken the tyres off and repaired and painted them. You'll get the lips done better that way.

Ben

The tyre was damaged when he got the wheels.

Benn
09-11-08, 01:51 PM
I can see, but the pics of them painted they have tyres on.
One of the pics above shows damage to the lip, with the tyre off you'd have got more acces to the lip for the repair. (if that makes more sence.)

I've got a replacement wheel lined up so it isnt an issue. All the tyres have been poppe doff the beed so I can access the lip for full paint
