Whats the Gen for mating a small block gear box to a big block engine?

I was told not to do it, just buy some big block conversion shafts

Loggy has had a XE for a few years, so he must have something up his sleeve lol. Unfortunately I know nothing about it, but it doesnt sound too easy.

It was more of a general query, nothing really up my sleave except for hoping to expand the posibillites for replacing my knackered f20.
Was also down to it being mentioned on a Kitcar site as to whether an RWD/XE gearbox would mate with a small block engine.

Im sure PhilGTE been a big block box on a c16xe., but thats the opposite way, so im sure its been done with non custom parts, just wanted to know what!

The bolt patterns are the same on the casing. A smaller fly would have to be used in order for the casing to clear. There would then be the starter issue? I think SBD stock a starter for smaller fly wheels.

EDIT: Just re read that. The casing must clear due to the bolt patterns being the same? May have to use a smaller fly due to the cluch size on the small block stuff. Less splines on the main shaft.

There was a lad on MIG with an F13 on his 2.0 8v Nova. He had no issues with it, you just need asmall block flywheel/clutch that will match the bolts on the crank of the engine you are using & fits within the F15/13 bell housing.

cue the onslaught of 'XE's will destroy a small block box' rants.

I think (or hope?) thats been exhausted on the thread that paul linked to.

The f16 is a big block gear box, so you shouldnt have done, no.

done mine today the f13 will bolt straight on, but the clutches are different so the plines on the shaft wont fit the 2 ltr clutch, you can use an NA diesel fly or the way i did it was i used the 1.6 flywheel and clutch, which is exactly the same size as the 2ltr but the bolt holes for the clutch are in a different place and the bolts that hold it to the crank are bigger on the 2l so i had to drill the 1.6 fly to take the 2 ltr bolts wasnt hard at all

Adam

You had to drill 2 extra holes in the flywheel then?
Screw that

DAN-F

no didnt have to drill extra holes, they both have 6 bolt holes but the 2 ltr has bigger (fatter) bolts so i had to drill out the existing holes in the 1.6 fly for the bolts to o through, ill get pics up now if it makes things easier

They dont both have 6 bolts.
2L 16v flys have 8 bolts, i have one here with me now...

That flywheel is off an 2.0 8v, 2.0 16v's have 8 bolts on the crank. Maybe your XE was an 8v bottom end with 16v head on.

True, but the f13 i have in my garage is free! and the small block ATB I was offered was cheap.
