View Full Version : The Rally Car Build!

once again, here i am with another nova..
the plan for this nova is to turn it into a VERY tidy and competitive rally car..
The shell is in incredible condition.. The ONLY bits of rust on the car is on the bottom of back arches where it meets the sill (where the gsi side skirt fin goes, think this is the reason its rotten there)..apart from that the shell is unbelieably clean..the pics i have do it no justice atal (you need to see it in person) but you lot will get the idea.lol
I bought if from a lad called Matthew, who is on PNG but unsure of his username..He has Brett's old Light green nova which again is a very tidy car..
anyway, the engine bay has been stitch welded, the underneath of car has been stitch welded and shot blasted, etch primed and stonechipped..looks spot on!
I bought the shell last night (Friday 1/08/08) and today it was sent to my uncles workshop (he is an engineer and built plenty rally cars in the past including a 205 he converted to rwd with a Ford 16v BDA engine with quaife gearbox) to get my Full Multi Point Weld In Roll Cage, Chris Astley Motorsport chassis plating kit, Strut top plates, competition seat bars, 'wrc' sill stands and all the old brackets etc i dont need taken out..
I actually feel as though i shouldnt be turning this into a rally car as its so clean, and its just going to get battered through a stage.but i keep getting told its better to start with a decent shell rather than bodging an old one up, which wont really make it a 'good' base.
The rough spec i want is - 1300 16v Suzuki engine or 1400 16v Vauxhall engine with a quaife SCCR gearbox, 4 pot brakes, astra gte calipers on rear, bias pedal box, Proflex/Bilstein suspension, Corsa C power steering..bla bla bla..
now i think i have done enough talking, i will let the pics do the talking now..

progress..been busy re-building my other nova that i use for grasstesting etc and went out last weekend and on my first run i put a conrod out through the side of the block so i have put that car away in the garage, and lost all notion to do anything with it..sick of the sight of it!
so..seen as i am fed up with that one i decided to crack on with this rally build..got most of my chassis plating kit on, seam welding, taking seam sealer etc off..my uncle is doing all the welding, coming out pretty good imo. not bad for a couple of nights work..

28-08-08, 10:58 AM
I think his uncle is doing the welding for him.
That is a very clean shell you've got there! Im noticing a lack of slam/headlight panel though! What are your plans engine wise? Not massive due to your age i guess. Are you going for the stripped out track day car?
Look forward to some progress pics...

been working flat out on it tonight, just about ready for the cage to be fitted.
and yes my uncle is doing the welding on this nova as its such a good shell i want it to be as good as possible. i can weld and been dong a fair bit on my other novas etc but this one needs to be spot on, especially the welds in the roll cage..spent alot of money on the cage so would hate for it not to do its job if we need it
i will fire some more photos on soon for you lot to look at and keep an eye on the build..

how are you intending on welding a complete seam around the base pole of this b pillar upright? around the back of this pole.
are you using CDS i hope?
the cage was sitting too far back there..it was moved forward just enough to weld right round about it..dont worry, its welded round every bar..lol
even where the front legs meet the main hoop, you cant get the welder over the top between hoop and roof, so we cut part of the inside sill out to drop cage down to get round about it..
ade, i am afraid you wont see this car..as its at my uncles until all the welding is done..
anyway, i have been and bought a corsa today so i could get engine out of it for my other nova and the guy that i bought it from owns a bodyshop (does the work for haugh's in dumfries) so he is going to paint this rally car when its all welded..getting a rather good deal aswell!

got some pics of it on its wheels again and back in my garage (with all the other nova junk)
got all the welds underneath primed then i bought myself a few litres of underseal and a gun so done the floorpan/important seams etc with that..
also bought 5 litres of vauxhall glacier white and all the other stuff you need for painting so its ready to go and get painted..
we will be painting underneath (hoping to have that done this week)..
anyway, here are some pics..

now as it was only tipped over onto one side at my uncles there was 3 parts he couldnt weld..
so i tipped it over carefully the other way and thought i would have a go at finishing the last couple of bits..i have got to say i am really impressed with my welding for not doing very much before..this is better than alot of my unlces welds on the car..lol

who are the lads running novas in btrda?
i think it will be mainly scottsh events..maybe in my second year i will come and do some btrda events and such like..
really pissed off as i am not getting the 1600 16v on r1 carbs anymore..to cut a long story short, the lad that had it said he would get a snapped engine mount bolt removed and somehow while doing it they cracked the block.
was really looking forward to playing around with r1 carbs etc and having a good engine to tune etc in the future.
i had even stated buying things for the engine (exhausts etc)so i had to let some guys down on here, sorry once again!
although i will be running a 1300 16v suzuki swift hopefully..will let you know how things go.
Pete_58, everthing in the garage is mine..lol

aye (dale stop using text type, you will get banned) lol
yeah seen the nova the other night when i passed through and seen it was all built up..
pics coming soon of my engine!

18-10-08, 05:55 PM
this is the engine i bought for it the other night..1300 16v suzuki swift gti engine with weber carbs and unknown headwork..
dont think it will be highly modified but even in standard spec these engines are fast for 1300's..over 100bhp standard!
think we are going to put r1 carbs onto it though as they seem to be alot more resonsive, pulls better up through the revs and alot easier to set up..
it will also get a full re-build aswell as fully lightened and balanced, ported and polished, and a 4 branch and exhaust system.. not hoping for mega power to start with (mainly reliability) but you can tune them fairly easy..can get 190bhp and they can rev to 11.5 k without doing alot to the bottom end. they are very good blocks!

Crack on mate! What you doing with the 40's from it ?
greg1.4
18-10-08, 06:02 PM
not sure.probs keep them incase the bike carbs dont work well..
the carbs are jetted etc for the swift so might keep them.
might consider selling my 40's from the blue nova but i have already been offered alot from someone local..
vaughanmc
18-10-08, 06:03 PM
Not too bad then, make some money from what you have there instead of spending more
Good plan :)
greg1.4
18-10-08, 06:06 PM
to be honest i want to store the 40's away ina box as i am definetly going to have more novas and old skool cars so i will be looking for 40's sometime no doubt..
they are getting a bit hard to find a decent set and mine are jetted for a nova and have been serviced etc..
What gearbox are you going to be using mate?
greg1.4
19-10-08, 08:26 PM
quiafe sccr..

How come your selling it mate ?
greg1.4
26-10-08, 09:29 AM
we have found a decent car built up, rac logbooked and ready to go that has a good spec and is reasonably cheap..
if i cant sell this i will be carrying on building it but just doesnt make sense to spend near £10,000 building the car when i can buy one with pretty much same spec/better for less than £5000.
vaughanmc
26-10-08, 10:13 AM
Aye true but building your own is more fun and your not 17 until next year anyway...
greg1.4
26-10-08, 12:03 PM
its fun if you have the money..
i am not saying i am definetly giving up this but going to speak to my dad later and see what happens from there.
its a shame but as you say it is alot more financially sensible if you buy the one that is already built.the other looks like a really good shell aswell though and looks like you have done quite abit of prep work to it.have you got anymore pictures of it?
p.s i bet the proflex dampers werent cheap!

small update-
the car is still here, decided against selling her..
although we have the other rally car complete and ready to go, i still want to get on with this..
i bought a gallon of glacier white, but now thinking about painting it subaru p1 blue..you see too many white rally cars/novas..
anyway, got some wheels and suspension back on the car today and got it to the front of the garage..
as she sits just now -

Wow fantastic little read through there mate, nice car, with a cracking cage too...glad to see your still going ahead with it.
So whats the crack with the yellow one? as i see it's got the 1300 16v swift engine in it.
Scott
greg1.4
02-01-09, 07:37 PM
cheers scott.
the yellow one is my current rally car, i am going to learn how to drive that first..
it is a cracking little shell also, but just has a 6 point cage and some things are not the way i wanted them..it will only have about 120/125bhp but it will be plenty to start with until i can afford to tune it up..want 150/160 out of it when i am finished..
so if the yellow one gets too "abused" or ends up on its roof i will just swap everyting over onto this shell..
seems sensible to start rallying and learn how to throw a cheaper small powered car about on the limit before i have a decent high powered car..
i would hate to build my good shell up then crash on my first or second event..
and lets face it, its going to happen. i keep getting told "if you dont go off, you aint trying"

thanks lads..appreciate comments like that..
Scott, i like my ideas too, but i dont have enough space or money for all my crazy ideas.lol i am struggling as it is..i have spent about 6k on the yellow car already and i still want to buy proflex for the rear, wheels, tyres, re-build/slightly tune the engine before august and fit a quaife dog box..
have plenty people who can weld/help me though..
my uncle has built loads of rally cars and he is a forest machine mechanic so he welds alot! my dad is also a mechanic and has some awesome tools and a big van so he helps out with collecting projects and taking me to track days ect..my brother loves novas, had a few and built a few himself (its him i neeed to blame for getting me into novas) so he is always there to help..he was also a welder for 4 years at a local engineering place..have loads of other friends that are into cars and will be there for me too, so in that respect i am lucky..

02-02-09, 01:39 PM
would love to keep it, but i simply cant afford to keep it..
when i need another shell i will build another..just to the same spec if not better than this one..thats the way i am looking at it anyway.
