View Full Version : Chirping/squeaking Sport

I've got a bit of a weird problem with my Sport.

It sounds like there is a bird stuck in the engine bay when the engine is running, just a constant chirping/squeaking sound.

So far I've:

- Taken the alternator out of loop - Still squeaking
- Taken carbs off, stripped down and rebuilt, couldn't see anything obviously wrong.
- Turned it over by hand, but apparently not fast enough to make the noise.
- Listened to all the various suspects around the engine with a screwdriver to see if i can hear any weird vibrations - couldn't hear anything untowards.

Suggestions have been something in the carbs, or potentially the water pump.

I'm not convinced it is the water pump, although I really can't think what else it is? I'm loathe to change it if i'm not sure it definately is the problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as its really doing my head in!

Ps. I realise it isn't ideal trying to diagnose this without actually hearing it, if i can get a recording of it, I'll upload it...

Mine makes a similar noise to what you've described, on mine its the water pump.

Actually, I've now managed to get a sound bite of it:

Pretty distinct noise!

sounds like the bearing in your water pump is on its way out!

Mine done it and it was the Water-Pump

Still does it the odd time but about 10x quieter

Just swapped it with another one, noise is still the same :(

Belt tension would seem to be ok, can twist it through 90 degrees with fingers and thumb. Thats about right I presume?

Assuming the one i fitted is ok (was a used one I was given with car and told was a good replacement), seems unlikely i managed to have 2 faulty water pumps making the same noise?

Any other suggestions anybody?

Never trust second hand parts! Buy a new one, £10 max on ebay, failing that i've no idea t the moment

Replaced with a brand new water pump, noise went for about 10 minutes, then came back! :(

Tried loosening and then tightening it, no difference as far as i can see!

Any more ideas? Could something be out of line maybe?

What about the tensioners/pulleys.

No tensioners (water pump does that!)

Would be quite worrying if it were the crank/camshaft pulley, doesn't sound like its coming from anywhere near them either...

Can you tell me where you got a screwdriver with ears from? lol

Could it be the cambelt cover? Try squeazing it.

lol, it's amazing what they can do with genetic engineering these days ;)

Cambelt cover - I'll give it a go, seems unlikely but I'm happy to have a go at anything just so I can drive it again!

Carb's sound sooo good when its working properly! :)
