Ive heard the Canons are very good cams.
I think thats what Benn and Orange Peel off Mig use, and they get some stunning results.
Nice sure what cam Olly H uses.

Also with a dslr, the quality of the lens helps with the outcome of pics

I watched the show where they compared DSLR's and the canons were also reviewed but the Nikon came out on top.

400d has been discontinued, thats what ive got. cant say how good it is.

£530.00 Canon 450d kit.

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/479454/CANON-EOS-450D

Probably cheaper elsewhere so you could get under the £500 mark shopping around.

My jumble of facts:

Canon and Nikon are the big 2. Longer zoom lenses tend to be a lot cheaper in Canon format than Nikon format.

I'm another 400D user. Olly H is a Nikon man.

What do you want to use it for Martin? You can budget xyz for a DSLR but in reality you can expect to spend the same again in glass and accessories. I spent £300 on my 400d 2nd hand with kit lens, another £200 on cheap glass, another £50 on memory. I'm already making up a wish list of lenses that are £300+ each, a £180 battery grip and lots more memory cards etc...

i want for quality pic of cars at shows etc, pics of my pets, pic of the kickboxing shows we do.. and the cam i had was just to slow and missed at of the "once ina life time" pics i was trying to get i.e a round house kick to the head, i used to get the after shot(the other guy k.o'd in other words) and i just wanna use it to mess aroudn with, familypics etc

Ntohing serious, but i want top stuff, 'coz from my past expericne(sp) ivee found that cheaper stuff doesnt last long and doesnt always work at the level you want it to.,.

I'd start with these:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141078 cam kit
http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=102738 a few of these cards
I also got a 2000mah battery for my 400d from ebay us for about £8.

If you want to shoot sports etc.. look at "prime lenses" ie fixed zoom lenses, the downside being the fixed zoom, but the upside being that they're very fast lenses, which means that they let a lot of light in, allowing for shorter shutter speeds, or lower light conditions.

'most' starter lenses are f/3.5 at the wide end and f/5.6 at the narrow end, some primes can be f/1.2 meaning they let at least 3x as much light through....

For example, this one (http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24_26&products_id=109) would let in three times as much light as your kit lens would at 50mm (based on f5.6 at 55mm). You have to learn to judge which lens to have on though, as you obviously cant zoom in or out.

Olly uses nikon stuff, which i'm not a fan off, but yeah me and neil both use a 400d which is a great camera, cannon make the better stuff in my books.

and the cam i had was just to slow and missed at of the "once ina life time" pics i was trying to get.

to be completely honest unless you have the camera expecting whats going to happen it will take just as long fiddling with settings and lens.
but if your close the ring and have a decent adjustable lens it would be ok. but the amount of times ive been at local football stadium i go from taking a photo from a player at halfway line and next thing i know im fiddling through lens as quick as i can as i look up and the guys right in front of me! got hit with the ball once.

I chose the 450d, mainly as it has a few extra features over the Nikons that I liked. Against the 400d, I would have chosen a Nikon - something like a D80 or D40x.

I found Pixmania to be the best place to buy the 450d kit; go via quidco and get an £11 voucher plus 3% cashback too. The camera set me back ~£450 I think after the voucher, then something like £16 cashback, and I paid another £10 or so at Play for a 4Gb sandisk memory card.

How many Nikon DSLRs have you used over your years of a photographer to say Canon is better? lol

I use both a Nikon D2x, and a Nikon D200 as a point and shoot

tbh Nikon and Canon are so minilar it's all down to personal taste and budget.

I got a canon 350D off ebay a year ago and its excellent. You have a choice of a huge range of lenses from various manufacturers that are interchangeable with other canon models (EOS ones with 1.6x crop sensors which include those listed above) - and yes you can use the pro lenses on it too if you can afford them. All my lenses (4) I got off ebay for less than £150 each and theyre excellent. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 450D or even the 40D (the latter I can use my existing memory cards on).

For summut like a ringside photo as mentioned you need a fast lans. For Canon the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is excellent as is the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 - mid range telephoto lenses with good wide angle at their shortest setting.

If youre taking indoor pics where flash cant be used then you might also want to invest in an image stabilising lens - canon do several for less then £350. Also go for a camera with a High ISO setting (1600+) - images will be grainier but most decent photoshop based programs can clean up most of it - however grain on a sports photo can look good (raging bull style!)
