i assume you are wanting to share the connection from what you said about network cards...

best thing to do is connect hte computers to a reuter and use that to connect them all...

If its for connecting the cable/DSL line into your computer then Network Card is the best...

USB port is shit!

I just got cable...got it working 2day :D

well 1st off which servie are you looking at? if its BT u will get an external USB modem. If its NTL it runs through the box by ur TV, then this conects to a netwokr card in your PC using a crossover network cable.
The expesive option with NTL would be to get a router, which you would conect to the NTL box, then conect each of your computer to it using a network card.

Other option which is cheaper is to conect your dads pc to the NTL box then share the conection to yourself and other computers. What operating system dioes he have on? If he doesnt have Windows2000 or Xp then you will also need to get a proxy program to share the conection.

Make sure you get some sort of firewall set up. With broadband your connection to the net is permanent and you don't want other net users gaining access to your PC. A firewall will stop others coming in and corrupting your files. If you get a router it should have a built in firewall and will stop this. Otherwise if you are getting a normal DSL modem you will need to get some Firewall software such as MacAfee or Norton etc. Hope this hasn't confused you even more!!! :o

Yes if you get a router, you can connect as many pc's as there are free ports on the router. You will need to connect with standard cat 5 ethernet cable so you will also need network cards in each pc. All pcs on the network must be set up with the same network group and gateway to the router. Different computer names though!!!

Thats correct as long as the Router has a built in hub/switch, if not you will need a seperate hub or switch.

This is sort of how my netwrok looks:

Mick you fool, you didnt have to reinstall windows lmao

The problem is almost deffinately because each machine hasnt got an IP address, so its auto-assigning itself one, which is crap

It gets complicated though...

You will have to set it up differently depending on which machine is gonna have the DSL modem etc.

Basically you need to enable "Internet Connection Sharing" (ICS) on the computer that is to have the modem. Thats presuming that computer is running a version of Windows with ICS. Otherwise you will need to get a "Proxy" program, theres some on download.com (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=proxy&tg=dl-2001)...
But... then you will have to give each machine a fixed IP address so they can "see" each other...
Dicko touched on all this in a previous post

next time your in chat I'll help ya if u like

No need to get a firewall though!!! the modem is permantly turned on, but you can still turn your computer off when your not using it. If you havnt got a firewall now you wont need one with broad band. Firewalls are a total overkill for home use really, get a good virus protection program and that will stop any attempts to put trojans etc on your pc. if there isnt a client/server program on your pc then nobody can connect to you in the sense of opening your cd rom etc (always a good laff).

yeah sure theres ping attacks and like but do you really want to spend half your internet session adding rules to block IP addresses etc.

I personally dont know any of ya but I doubt you've got anything of major interest on your pc that somebody might want.

Make sure when you setup your little 2 pc network that you keep it LAN and not WAN, you dont want somebody joining your file sharing network from across the net. lol
