you may find it easier to take the door cards off, and weld pieces of metal from the inside of the door.

would it not warp the door?
not if u do abit at a time.. just do some tacks, in the same way u losen heads, corner to corner etc

cheers Mart! Then i take it just fill the line and slight dip in the plate?
yup.. or do as paul says weld a plate on the inside of the door and use alot of filler to "fill" the hole, but it'l probs sink in no time..
u cud fil the hole with weld, if yur carfull and take it bit by bit so u dotn warp it i supose
Take your door card off, Take the lock backing plate off. Get a small square of metal which is bigger than the hole. Get a mate to sit inside the car holding the metal with a screw driver.
On the outside (obv you have taken it back to metal) set your welder to a very low setting and do small tak welds around the plate.
Let this cool down and gently tap with a pick hammer to make sure it is strong enough and wont fall off.
Gently tap around the outside edge of the lock Very lightly. Now with a DA or block and sand paper scuff the area. Use a tiny bit of fibreglass to fill the hole sand this back so just the hole has been fibreglassed then do a light skim of filler. Sand this down use High build 2k primer to primer the area whala.
It wont sink as you have welded a plate behind the hole, DONT try and Plug weld the hole you will distort the metal. DO small light tacs about 7 - 10 will do. I did 5 tacks but im used to welding etc.
I used a sizeable washer with a countersunk bolt going through it, held on by a nut and another washer on the other side, then a skim of filler. Worked a treat, and no welding required. As I'm sh!t at it. lol
I did what Jack said on my red nova and it worked a treat. I just got a bolt from B&Q though and ground the head down after tightening it up. then epoxied the inside to seal it good n proper and then skimmed with filler - never sunk or anything. Filler only sinks if you apply it too thick - need to build it up in layers allowing time to cure...

When filling larger areas I use fibreglass paste, then regular filler over the top of that.
I must admit jack, thats a kool idea fella. Esp if you have no access to a welder. As long as the end result is the same and the filler will not sink your laffin :D

liking the idea of using the bolt as it's going to be more reversible than welding the door.
