Hi, im new to this... Ive had my 83plate nova for nearly 8years, I have just finished restoring it. Im having trouble with the car cutting out as the engine revs start to slow, also as I drive it will cough and splutter occastionaly and wont reach much above 40mph. I have rebuilt the engine, I have also just recently changed the ingintion moduel i the dizzy (thought it may help)

Its a 1.2 L engine. can anyone give me some help and advice.
I was told by vauxhall that mine being a lead petrol (4star) car I could just change straight over to unleaded...is this true.

Thankyou for any help.

does it feel / sound like its running on all cylinders? if you cant get above 40 the somethings seriously wrong! does it start and idle ok? hen when you rev it is clean and crisp or does it struggle of hesitate before reving? got to ask lots of questions as without hearing /driving it its very hard to diagnose a running problem.
it could be something as simple as a missfire with a dodgy plug or lead- or could be as serious as that the new head gasket has not ealed very well.
why was he engine rebuilt in the first place? was there anything wrong with it to start with?

That engine should use unleaded anyway - it was designed to.

Have you set the ignition timing correctly?
Does the fuel pump work OK?
Does the engine turn over OK by hand?

engine runs on tick over lovely... it runs on all four cylinders, doesnt hesitate, revs really well, just when your driving it as soon as the revs lower and you start to slow down say for a corner the engine will just cut out.
Fuel pump does seem to be ok, it pumps fuel through to the carb.

I rebuilt the engine as I was restoring the car and wanted to learn more about the engine, also it was 25years old and some parts needed replacing.

Have you been through the carb setup/maintaining part of the haynes manual?

Have you tried increasing the idle speed?
