Place near where im working is a closed down garage, its got a mk2 nova and a mk1 astra parked on the forecourt. There both covered in moss but solid with no rot, neither any decent spec so the nova's not worth much but anyone know if a MK1 Astra Shell is valuable?

Depends if its a 3 door I'd reckon mate or what model it is

Where did you notice these - I'm in Ireland and theres a Mk2 Nova Miami Blue sitting in a yard covered in moss doing f*ck all lol

Get the bonnet up and note down the VIN, then apply for the V5. I would.

Ben
15-07-08, 07:09 PM
They dont have V5's in Belguim.

Astra could be worth a few quid, I'm sure someone over here would make it into a GTE rep. Even a tidy poverty one would be quite sought after.

Oh noes location check failure!
Can you not apply to be the owner then? Surely they have a log book of some description.
Over here the way it works is, if you have registration / chassis number / make, model / colour of vehicle you can use form V62 IIRC and apply for the vehicles logbook.
The DVLA then get in contact with the registered keeper, and if they hear nothing back from them within a few weeks (can't remember exactly how long) the log book is sent to you in your name.

I plan to do it to a few old classics i have seen seemingly dumped. The worst that happens is you don't get the ownership and maybe lose the 30 quid or so it costs to apply. On the other hand you get find yourself with a VW Camper or a mk2 Escort if you look in the right places lol

I know how to apply for a logbook, having a logbook does not make you the legal owner and you are liable for prosectuion for deception if get caught applying for a car that you dont own.

L14MNP
15-07-08, 07:21 PM
LOL Whatever.

It works. It is not theft if there is no registered keeper.
having a logbook does make you the legal owner, it isn't just supplied for a laugh you know.
You sound pretty pikey anyway if you are eyeing up cars that don't belong to you.
Chill out mate.

I was more thinking of knocking on the door of the house attached and asking if the guy wanted to sale them.

Having a logbook does not make you a legal owner, you could apply for a porsche logbook when its sat on the forecourt of a dealers and the DVLA woul issue one as its in the dealers name they dont check ownership as they assume its for sale, so get the logbook walk into porsche and try claiming you are the legal keeper as you have a logbook for the car, dont fancy your chances you daft chimp.

You never mentioned there was a property with people living there that may be the owners, you gave the impression of it being an empty forecourt on its own.
Yes the DVLA do check for owners. Do your homework before you go guessing son.
Anyway, back to the TOPIC...

the V5 is NOT legal proof of ownership. It only proves you are the vehicles 'keeper'

L14MNP
15-07-08, 07:31 PM
Fair enough but you can't get anything else in your name that entitles you to the vehicle can you mate?
I am certain that being the 'keeper' as stated on the V5c also makes you the 'owner' or as near as it is legally possible to be a vehicles 'owner'.
This has strayed way off what I originally said. Lol

Ben

Look i know more than you on this subject trust me.

When a trader buys a car they fill in the yellow section of the V5 and it takes out of the owners name and into the traders, if someone applies for a logbook which is marked on the DVLA computer as in a traders name THEY WILL NOT CHECK OWNERSHIP. That is the whole point of the yellow section to stop adding unnessacry owners to the car and to cut down on paperwork.

Hence why if anyone is ringing or twinning a car they use autotrader/ebay to find an exact matching car eg year colour mileage etc at the other end of the country so they can apply for the logbook. Hence why anyone with any sense covers the numberplate in the pictures.

You need the VIN also, but then you knew that.
When you have acquired a car in this way, as I have, then I will assume you know more than me.
I never mentioned cars being in traders names either, that's all your doing.
FACT: DVLA will contact the registered private keeper and ask them if they have sold the vehicle, if there is no response or they answer yes, then a new V5c IS issued in the name of the person that applied for it.
As with many rules and regs in this fine country there are loopholes.

Im not saying it dosent happen and possible but you can be prosecuted for doing it as it is theft when it all comes down to it.

You dont need a VIN number when applying it just can slow the process down.

lol I don't condone it mate. Just handy for saving things like the Astra/Nova you mentioned from the scrappers, the loopholes concern me, such as a long holiday and your car could end up re-registered.
It's theft in some instances agreed :)
BTW hope you get the mk1 lol

if its a 1300 you could probably make £500 selling the parts and thats just the engine and box!

Chimp somes it up, spot on Ben lol

Regards the Astra, 1981 and earlier are worth big bucks for Historic Rallying. The gearbox is often the 2.21 2nd gear ratio that the Tarmac Oval racers crave. If the engine is a 1300 then some Class 2 Autograss racers will sell younger members of their family to pay for it.

I sold an absolute rot box 1981 shell for £150 on ebay with not a useable panel on it. Guy drove from London to Pembrokeshire to get it and towed it home on a pole [with his son behind the wheel, and no shafts to hold the front hubs in :tard: ]

The 2.21 gear cluster made £330 lol

And the engine is being used in my girlfriends grasser.

I have a 3dr 1300s Opel Kadette D (same thing) in Brown and i know its worth money but chances are that if its covered in Moss then the car will be rotten. It'll look solid til you go poking and Prodding round it mate.

Wish I had completely stripped that Mk1 Astra 1300 in the scrappers now. Only had the carb and inlet and ENEM cam from it.

If you insist. Ben called you a daft chimp, based on your comments I'd agree. You say you don't condone it, yet the post before you say you've done it lol

To save arguing about it, next time you successfully do this, post it up here for us all to see. I am genuinely interested :)

LOL Ben was talking about claiming ownership to a supercar on a forecourt.
Read things. Yeah I will let you know, not a problem. Like I said I know where there's a couple unloved/seemingly unowned vehicles I would have :)

If you can get some pics of the astra and find out what the condition is im sure someone off www.mk1oc.com (http://www.mk1oc.com) would be interested. The 1300 inlet manifolds are worth alot as well as thats what all the autograss boys use due to better flow than the later/ nova ones.
