Head gasket only goes on one way, cant see it being a HG fault anyway. Check the pipes that go to the throttle body, think theres 2 / 3 ? ones a breather off the cam cover and the others are water pipes (think theres a water jacket around the throttle body), if you've got 2 of them the wrong way round (water pipe going to breather) then you'll have water p*ssing out the throttle body, had the same prob on a mates 1600.

Sounds as though some breather &/or TB coolant circuit pipes are mixed up.

Its going to need an oil change after this I reckon.

Did it cut out when you had it running?
Could have done some rod damage.
