If you are changing the whole box then the engine needs to come out by lowering it down thru onto the floor. However if you are just changing the internals between an F10 and an F13 say or cos of mechanical probs then you can do this with the gearbox still attached to the engine in situ:

1. Bonnet off
2. Jack whole of front of car up so that both front wheels are off the ground. Support securely on blocks etc.
3. Using a suitable hoist support the engine/gearbox around the bell housing area. Use an old seat belt or similar good strap
4. Roll bar off/disconnect gear linkage on top of the box
5. Tie bars undone at the front/exhaust disconnected at the manifold
7. Disconnect track control arms at the chassis end (under front footwells)
8. Prise out drive shaft with large screwdriver or similar at gearbox end
9. Get m8 to pull wheels out until got clearance to slide drive shafts clear of final drive housing. This can be a real struggle and needs some brawn
10. Undo final drive inspection plate (at the bottom at the rear of the gear box)
11. Undo the large bearing adjuster ring(passenger side where the driveshaft comes out from) which has little castellations in it. I use a bar with a piece of flat 6mm plate about 8 inches long and 2 inches wide welded on. Dont try tapping the castellations with a hammer and punch as they tend to break off.
12. remove crown wheel/ differential. Can be bastard confusing to get out but if you cockle it just right it will come.
13. Undo gearbox/engine mount and the rear engine mount leaving the 1 engine mount on the drivers side still connected
14 lower the whole lot down a few inches until there is enough room to slide out the gear cluster
15 Undo the main end casing (note not the small end plate cos thats the 5th gear plate- you will have to undo a few bolts in it however)
16. carefully prise the end plate off its dowels and withdraw it and the gear cluster all as one.
17. Thats it. The only thing to watch out for that may fall off etc is a washer that goes on a selector shaft near the bottom of the box. all the rest is securely held together as a cluster.

Replacing is the reverse. Haynes is a big help althought they suggest a different way to take out drive shafts

Sorry forgot to say. You will need to disconnect the gear linkage where it come thru from the zorst tunnel to the back of the engine and you will also need to remove the selector housing which is on top of the gearbox and withdraw the selectors.

if ur changing box there is no need to drop out the engine

did mine 2 weeks ago , took 1 nite to do properly

just undoen the gearbox mounts and lowered that end, supported engine on jack,

plenty of room if u take off the wishbone/tie rod

only help i had was lifting the box on and off the block

engine doesnt need to come out but u will need to angle it a little and have a jack suporting it. Good chance u will need to drain the coolant and gearbox oil.
