lets hope not:wtf:

i think we need a 'done to death' section where people can post 'the usual newbie questions'.

like:- im doing a 2l 16v conversion, is it hard and what parts do i need?lol

lol w2lsr - That's a good question. Love seeing that one.

Will GSi parts fit my mk1? Also can I fit the 'mk1' steering wheel? lol etc...

You can only put the 8v in the mk1 mate and 16v in the mk2. So depends what base car you have. Hope this helps.

myself id rather the 8v but thats just me, its quick enough not as powerful as an xe but its lighter so makes up alittle bit there plus imo it'll have a slight edge in handling being lighter, theyre cheaper and in my experience more reliable,
xe's are still amazing though for what they are

well said dan.

i was gonna say, if u want a bullet go for the 16v
if you want a war horse go for the 8v and run it on carbs

man id love a 2.0 8v on carbs, imagine that on a muddy rally corner, gettin drift, going BWAAARRRHHHTT BWAARRRHHTT BBWWWAAARRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAA off down the road

If your going to the hassle of a big block conversion i would just go for the redtop, they will be a little bit more expensive but i built my last xe up for just over 200quid. You will only want more power later on so may as well start with the most possible.

Handling wise they really arent that bad unless you have cheapy suspension

the xe is also much newer, less likely to be worn out, and more economical.

oi nobby. Off my patch!

On a serious note. Have you thought about the rare v6 conversion, or even rarer. A honda vtec conversion?

Both engines are little gems tbh.

A low mileage example of either with service history is going to be hard to come by, so find a good engine you can trust & let that be your choice. Stay away from the c20NE version of the 8v though if you crave power.

8vs are the way to go for a 1st time COnversion.

They are Bullet Proof and if you get an early SEH you're onto a winner mate. They can easilt cover 250k with little to no servicing, just keep them in Rocker Cover Gaskets, oil and the occational Plug Change and you're away!!

My mate has an SEH he took from his old SRi130 and he swaers its standard but its whipped GSi Cavs round the place.

They're dirt cheap and great power.

Agree. The SEH had quite a lot of technology thrown at it over the std 8v's. Lighter piston crowns, thinner rings, lighter block, higher comp pistons, bigger valves... etc.

All the 2.0 8v owners will no doubt say 8v. Everyone else will tell you 16v lol

TBH, unless you manage to find an SEH engine, you're looking at 115bhp on the 8v. Thats not a great deal more than a 1.6, which will be a fair bit lighter (rather than just slightly lighter than the XE).

I'd say it depends on budget, what mods you want to do, what the availability (and condition) of engines is etc.

I have 2no C20XEs, 1no X14XE and a C16XE and to be honest Jack, if I could get a good SEH I'd swap them in the morning. They're a hardier engine and Crave abuse.

I'm amazed no-one has put in the usual fictional claim that the 8v has more torque as that usually comes up in threads like this!!

Welsh Dan
15-07-08, 01:47 PM
The 8v has 1000 more torques, whatever they are.

Paul

8vs are poo. 16V FTW!

AFPMSL, whats with Clarkson referring to "torques"?! In his older stuff he talks about "foot-pounds of torque", so why in the past 2-3 series of TG does he go on about "torques"?

Its like saying my celica has 225 torques and 240 powers
