Office based professional is most likely to be the lowest; slightly lower risk than dogsbody admin as the fact you're a professional indicates you have half a brain and will look after your car a bit more.

Generally though, in terms of car insurance, they're pretty all much the same. The only occupations that attract a higher premium are journalism, mechanic, traders, sportspersons/entertainers (due to being in the public eye) and armed forces (including civil servants based on a military base - even though an insurance policy won't cover you on a military establishment )

There's no "occupation insurance group rating" like you get with cars, so insurance companies usually just rely on in-house (or if unavailable, published) statistics to calculate occupation premiums. If an underwriter has whole load of Badger Impregnators start crashing their cars, they will no doubt see that occupation as an increased risk and increase the premiums for Badger Impregnators accordingly.

[edit] And yes, its insurance fraud if you lie about it. You're deliberately supplying the insurance company with misinformation in an attempt to get a lower insurance premium. However, some occupations are open to interpretation (I don't mean telling them you're the CEO of IBM when you're a builder) - if in doubt, check, but bear in mind the monkey on the end of the phone may not know the right option, especially when they have a mahoooosive list of occupations to choose from.

Different occupations have a MASSIVE effect.
I found that out to the cost of over £100 when i changed jobs....

Also you cant lie about NCB, as they ask to see proof within 14days of taking the policy out.

turbojolt
08-07-08, 04:53 PM
i know i would not lie about that anyways lol

what did you go from and to

Adam

From office based to warehouse/industrial suppliers.

It went up by about £110 (on a policy that was only £369).

I've checked quotations against each other with the only difference being a change in occupation, and they've only ever differed by a few ££ if at all. That wasn't looking at high risk occupations though. I thought that was against a renewal quote tho?

Where did the NCB bit come from? lol

Mechanics pay more and are also not allowed the 'driver other cars' part, i enquired last time i phoned them. Guessing as it would be misused to doing private work.. even tho i dont do it :(

Time to find another job lol

surely a police officer would be one of the best occupations to have as insurance companys know thay wont purposly do anything illegal

LMFAO, you believe that you'll believe anything!

I used to know a policeman when I was in my late teens, and he was worse at bending the law with cars thasn I was!

Though make sure you engage your brain and note that a professional isnt likely to use a nova for their daily commute.

I'm a "professional" and I occasionally use my nova to come to work lol.

iirc you can be a toilet cleaner in an office but if you have a degree you are classed as a professional.... bit of an expensive way to get cheap car insurance though lol

wisewood

i thought you were only a professional if your qualification was relevant to the job you were doing. otherwise you are just a graduate.

Stage 2 certificate in toilet cleaning doesnt count.

???

I haven't read all the in's and out's, but lying to your insurance company is about the same as not having insurance in the first place. If anything was to happen and the car/your details were checked your insurance is void anyway.

Jack

^ He was just doing it on a quotation to find out how much difference it would make if he had a change in occupation.

Literally lol

I'm a qualifited professional, and I use my Novargh to get to work. People in the office do wonder why though lol

This is why a lot of people wouldnt. If you are proud to be interested in something that other people find a bit odd, their opinion wont bother you, but some people just dont understand why you might want an older car, especially if you have a new car too. But "up yours" to them. Narrow minded idiots. I should know they are narrow minded. I am one lol

working in a pub is pretty high, because your expected to have a few beers after work then drive home.

seems pretty cheap being a lorry driver though.

but that does make me a "professional driver" lol
