on the inlet manifold you have a coolant jacket built in, from a racing point of view would it be better to blank this off??? i.e colder denser air??? just playing around with a few ideas

opinions??:thumb:

In theory yes!

In reality, probably not worth the bother.

True, considering the heat soak into the manifold from the head?

on a carb engine, the manifold also has the temp sender (which is also the system bleed point), and any gains would be hard to measure, just sort out a cold air pipe for summer running.

think ill have ago at blanking it off n see what happens :thumb:

get it welded and make sure to do something with the thermostat, but dont remove it completely!

Thermostat's on the other side of the head!

to late the thermostats already gone lol

wanna keep it as cool as poss!!

Hmm, the thermostat helps pressure the system!

what sort of engine spec are you running??????

if it is just a road going spec, then don't muck about with too much, if cooling is such a problem, have you had the rad flushed recently? also a diesel thermostat will get things a bit cooler.

its a 1300 sr used for autograss so it does 5 laps of an oval circuit at max revs in 2nd gear:eek: lol then it gets a rest for 10 minutes then the missus goes out and does the same

thats why cooling/ the inlet manifold is sooo important

Twin, dual-fan rads in the back with a meaty electric pump?

looking at putting the rad in the back but in the class i race your not allowed to fit an electric pump

If you use a decent rad you wont have that problem! You need to put something in place where the thermostat was though.

Nova or Corsa Diesel rad. Best thing I have used, but I keep braking them lol

2 speed fan too.

Only other problem with blocking it off, is you will not get a true temp reading. As I found out and melted a piston :)

I'm running a brand new GSi rad with a 10" push fan, which seems more than enough. Cost about £80 too

dont run a tem gauge anyway

if i dont know about it i dont worry about it lol lol lol

the heat soak from the head will probably need water cooling to help keep it down. I once read an article from CCC mag back in the eighties about Astra/Nova Challenge 1300 tuning, where they used a metal washer in the thermostat housing to keep it at a working temp. some heat wrap on the chimney will help a lot, the biggest rad from the scrappy will also help.
If you are fitting a rear rad, then keep the water in the manifold, but restrict it (plate washer?) so you can still use the temp sender as an air bleed.
