View Full Version : How do you put a price on your nova??

Hi all

Well its been donkies since i have been on any of the vauxhall sites as ive got the air cooled bug since buying my camper. Havnt had chance to use the nova at all this year and it really does get to me that its sitting in a garage not being driven or enjoyed how it should be.

The problem i have is that i want the camper finished, so cant really afford to use the nova this year (those of you who know splitscreens will know how much they cost!) I have contemplated selling the nova but havnt got a clue what it would fetch!

I dont really have to sell, and to be honest would probably be gutted seeing it drive off but just wondered what intrest there would be in the car and if now is a good time to sell. It would HAVE to go to a good home, and i would probably end up buying back for more than i sold it for lol.

The car is still mint and has had no exspense spared over the 13 years i have owned it, having invested well over £30,000 into it. So how do you go about pricing it up, or is it just what someone is willing to pay.

(p.s, this isnt a for-sale ad, just after a little advice from people that know me and the car;) )

Gotta be a similar price to Nick J's?, or Nick Caro when he was selling his, K95 VHD. All for sale recently for between 4-6k.

As above

I am assuming that the shell is genuinely 'mint' and no rot anywhere... bearing in mind whoever buys it WILL (or should!) go through it with a tooth combe - otherwise they sell better broken tbh...

But around £3.5-5k I would guess.

What spec is it? Theres a good chance its worth 150% of the UK price if sold in Ireland. They've been known to make €7500 for XE Powered items. I've not seen these myself but a few lads in here have, (Cormac, Keith, most of the NI users)

I reckon it could sell in the high £6k's mate the cars mint I have loads of pics of it and read loads about it - In TV etc etc :)

Only if I had the money

Its a specialist market.
You might get someone who knows your car and will stump up £10k or more but in all honesty there probably aren't too many peeps out there like that. Plenty of those that would love it may not have the kind of money you would want for it
Although your car is fantastic it is still at the end of the day a Vauxhall Nova. We all have that has problem when we value our cars. You can pick up decent std ones for a few hundred quid which immediately puts a low base in the pricing

TBH I wouldn't sell it - you could well end up feeling sick to see it go and sick about the money it went for. It obviously means more to you than money really so unless you've fallen out of love with it keep it

I'm not that familiar with your car tbh but you can put a price tag of £5-7k on a nova and gain plenty of interest. Its then waiting for the right person to come stump up the cash.

I originally put mine up at £5k and it sold in the 1st 3wks for essentially the asking price (a deal was done with some bits removed). It was only personal circumstances that stopped the sale.

From what I understand of your car you could probably put a higher price tag on it than £5k.

It's a strange one, my old White Nova wasn't mint, didn't have half the trick stuff yours has, wasn't in as good condition... as your saw when we went to the Ring together (this is Olly btw, Karl)

It wouldn't have sold for any more than £2.5k in one piece, but after breaking it, I totalled up all my sales that came to £4.6k, for essentially a stripped out White K reg Nova, with a cage, buckets, and an XE on TBs & diff

Amazing when you think about it really... and it depends if you have the heart to brake it, mine didn't mean much to me, 99% of the parts were sold before our Ring trip back in Sept 05, and the day I got back, it was stripped.

Also depends on why I wanted to sell it, money? etc... I broke mine because it was my only car, I'd removed the heaters - I was being a pansy thinking I couldn't go through the winter without them lol

Then I got a Vectra, lost my mind, and here I am lol

I have no idea, but i personally wouldnt pay more than £1.5k for a nova, it would have to be pretty special too  but thats me, i dont really like them on a whole

Got any pics of the car? or a link to a build thread? :thumb: sounds like a special car, wouldnt mind seeing it

oh and feel free to fire up some pics of the splitty too :)

WOW my favourite Nova ever mate! Loved it for as long as I can remember. The thing is immense, pleace stick up some more pics Karl!

Value wise I reckon 5K+ for your spec mate, but you may be waiting a while, as I'm sure you're aware to find the right buyer. Not just some dick with a bank loan who will thrash it and keep it outside :O lol

if I didn't have a money pit of a project at the minute I would be very interested in it :)

This man has taste, loving the Splitty project dude! The closest I get is a blast in my mates '68 bay lol

I'm sure Karl wouldn't mind me posting a few pics of his car up from our trip to the Nurburgring back in September 2005, please do bare in mind that all of these photos were taken after a 750+ mile trip, through rain, salty roads, and hurrendous crappy british/ french/ dutch/ belgian & german weather... although you wouldn't think it looking at the engine bay, under bay shot and front arch pic!

stop teasing, you know your gonna keep it!!

on the other hand, id love to say 1st dibs, but im trying to stop myself buying another
saying that, if i did buy one, yours would be top of the list. always loved it, and almost pooed in my pants thinking it was gonna get trashed when you had a near 'incident' at trax 05 when the coil lead came off the dizzy coming out the final corner!!

Keep it Karl. Failing that wait for the right buyer, thats what its all about. That Nova is particularly lovable & equally as worthy of a new home as Bretts or Nicks cars were.

I had about 120 quid saved towards Simps's turbo so I'll just scribble Rowntree on the jar & get saving for yours!

Best of luck whatever you decide bud.

Its that age old thing. A car be it nova, dare i say ;) ford and the like, when modded and done well, are only worth what someone is willing to pay. If you decided to sell, i think you would be mad to looking at those pics, stick a price on it and see what happens. Either no takers (break it for spares:cry: ) or they will be falling over each other to buy it! Looking at those pics you have put time, effort and lots of £££ into it, so why sell it. If you have a split screen aswell (a mate is restoring an ex german post one at the mo, he calls it the money sponge!) you obviously like your cars.

Keep it and drive it hard, thats what you built it for?!

Im still building mine 3 years on and dont think ill ever part with it! Its a toy at the end of the day, all that hard work, drive it harder!! :thumb:

Ben
04-07-08, 06:23 PM
That car is you, i dont think anyone else driving it would be the same.

If your in no need for the money, lock it away and forget about until you fancy a blast out in it, the Split wont handle to well round the ring when you get the urge.

Saying all that, its a car id buy but i cant fit in the seats lol

04-07-08, 06:48 PM
As said, its only worth what folk are willing to pay .... well built good spec Novas don't come up for sale that often, surely you've got an idea of what you'd be willing to take for it ?
Obviously your gonna want as much as possible for it, i'd say £4.5 - £6k ??
Stick it up for top dollar, you can always come down in price. Thats what i'd do anyway.

Does look awesome, and very mint indeed.

What size are the Mo's on it?

adam c
04-07-08, 09:20 PM
ive heard people talk about your car but never known what it looks like etc?what is the full spec of it?imho your car is only worth what you would be willing to let it go for!for example if someone offered me £3000 for mine i wouldnt sell it(even though i know it isnt worth that!lol ).if you have no need for the money i say dont sell it as you will have very fond memories of it and will probably regret selling it later on!

Without doubt one of the all time subtle yet best built novas imo, I wouldnt sell it Karl, Knowing its sat there in the garage and you can use it whenever is one thing however when its gone..... its gone and I think you would regret it without a doubt.

I used to love the Integrale style bonnet it had.

04-07-08, 11:51 PM
tis one of the inspirational novas for most people, seen it firstb in a B&W pic in a PNG mag. as most people are saying id keep it you'll only regret it its part of you, selling it just to fund another project isnt enough to sell wait till your bored of it then it needs to go.

05-07-08, 01:08 AM
Tbh the pictures dont do it any justice (no offence to anyone) but to see this car in front of you its obvious the time effort and money thats gone into it, id vote with the rest to keep her mate as i dont think anyone else could or would love her the way you have and do, keep her tucked away in your garage as part of your collection where you know you can always take her out for a thrash/drive whenever you fancy it, i reckon youd be pretty damn gutted to see her drive away!

Hi Karl,

How's life in Germany mate?

I think the car is awesome matey, but you know that already!

I think if I was to hazard a guess, I'd say £4000-£6000.

I think someone off this site would prob buy it!

Imo one of the best novas of all time, clean factory lines and an super smooth engine bay, a perfect combination. Always loved it when I saw it at the Pod and the bonnet is a work of art most definitely work 5 grand all day. I don't even think that justifies it when you see what clean cars fetch on here and the parts go for I would never tell some one to sell there car but if your heart is set on the 'Splitty' then why not let someone else enjoy it and if you still need a Ring Racer you could build one for a lot less money. I personal would hate to see this car ruined by stone chips from the 'Ring or even worse the Armco, when someone else could continue what you have started ie dominating the Vauxhall shows with.

I'm sure you'll get inspiration at Billing fella and want to keep it!! As said by many, stick it away in the garage, or leave it on the trailer on the way back from billing and bring it to mine and stick it in the garage with mine!! I'm telling you the splitty will be useless on track days!! lol

Rick, Karl didn't move out to germany in the end, things changed and he stayed in the UK, although making many visits to the Nurburgring. The Nova was out there for a while but he brought it back last year and left his MK2 golf out there as a dedicated ring toy!!

If it's not costing you anything to keep it stored then keep hold of it. I've been back and forth with the same thoughts about selling whats left of mine. I've got a very big commitment coming up soon and whilst everytime I see the car sat at CP's barn in the state that its in my heart drops and I think "what am I doing, it's been in this state for too long, it'll never get finished" yet I see what CP has done with his rebuild and look at other peoples projects on here and my spirits are lifted again.

Provided the elements can't get to it and eat it away it'll still be here in a years time when I have more time to work on it and get it finished. I guess the same can be said for yours. Concentrate on what's important to you at the moment, perhaps get one of those car bubble things if you haven't got one already and come back to it when you have the time.

If you have the slightest doubt about selling it, then you probably don't really want to sell it. Those people that sell their cars for lots of money probably don't have the same sentimental attachment as you which is why the sale went ahead (or they needed the money desperately).

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Jim.

Hey Karl, Hope all is well with you, sorry I didnt get a proper chat at PV. But hopefully I can still make it to billing!

My honest opinion is that you buy a bubble and put it away in that, bring it out for the show's and keep hold of it. You've plowed thousands into that car and its been an inspiration to many of us, as Ben said, the car is you.

Good luck with your decision, but i'm pretty sure you'll keep it ;)

At the same time, it is still potentially 4-6k sat doing nothing.

I decided to sell K95VHD because I had fallen out of love with the whole thing (personal reasons that a lot of people know about RIP)

I had always thought "One day, I'll buy a scoob/evo/?????" and realised that time was passing me by and who knows what happens tomorrow? so I decided I couldn't justify both and bought the Subaru/sold the Nova.

I didn't use K95 often enough and it was a waste when someone else could enjoy it, and although I considered keeping it just to take to shows (as suggested elsewhere onb this thread) but I go to 2-3 shows a year due to work and family commitments. It would've been a shame for it to become an ornament!

I hope Karl keeps it, as it's part of him BUT if it means it sitting in a bubble and never being seen/used, I'd prefer for him to sell it and it stay within "the scene" and at least when we go to shows, we can all appreciate it. . . . I've always argued the point at which a car becomes an ornament, it is no longer a car.........

Karl, good to see you still have the car after all of these year. I'm interested to see what you're doing with the camper – any pics?

It's got to be able to fetch a fair wedge from the right buyer. After all, it's plenty of cash thrown at it to make it one of the cleanest out there. Hold out for the right money if you sell it.

I've finally had to give in to selling mine as well. I've found it difficult to put a value on it also but hopefully people will put some sensible offers in.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Sorry i havnt been on before, I dont have the internet at home anymore so only get to post at work.

Would love to reply to all of you messages but didnt expect so many!

I dont have to sell the car, but as mentioned it is alot of money just sitting there and it would pay off a few debts etc, (money is tight at the mo as it is for many people) Also i want the split finished but can find the money from elsewhere to complete it.

My golf that i currently keep at the Ring will be returning back to the UK in August and will be the car i will be selling now. I have no attachement to this car so it makes sense to let it go. If anyone is after a very sorted MK2 Golf get intouch, i could leave it at the track and do a package as a ring toy if anyones intrested! It would cost as much as you think and if you get a few of you together and share the car, you would have the time of your life!

Good old Andy has sorted me out a trailer for the weekend as the nova has no tax mot etc at the mo, so we will be bringing it down to Billing (all be it pulled by a Vectra) Should hopefully inspire me to carry on with the car, and as you all rightly point out I couldnt watch someone else drive it just at this point in time, but if my thoughts change its good to know it could possibly go to a good home with one of you guys. At the end of the day it is just a car but having owned it for 13 years would be a shame to see it go...;)

P.S will try and post some up-to-date pics of the split up Mark when i get chance mate, good to hear from you mate.
