F20s are pretty bullet proof (on standard XE's) just get a second hand one and paint it!

Or change teh diff bearings - you can do it situ! EASY!

whatevers rattling around you can hear it when on tickover, although when clutch pedal pressed down noise stops, i thought initaly it was the thrust bearing but its not a wining noise. if you boot it then decelrate the noise becomes more apparent when decelrating, my mate thought it might be the spigot bearing? but when i took him out in it he said that he thinks its the diff

doubt its the diff tbh... it wouldnt make any difference if the clutch was pressed or not if it was the diff.

Take the inspection plate off and have a butchers

Same, especially as it comes/goes with the clutch being engaged.

the clutch bearings & the gearbox input shaft bearing need doing, its probably been running a bit low on oil. it is an easy repair, it is way easier than doing a head gasket job, don't be frightened of a gearbox.

Sounds like just the release bearing to me.
As soon as you put pressure on the clutch pedal it takes the play up in the fooked bearing and stops the noise....

Well yeah obviously, lol. But it will be much quicket to just slip the box off the enggine (wuith the engine secured with crane etc)
