So why do we have to use @ instead of at???

the answer is its an abbreviation (why is that such a long word any way??)
But you have to press the shift key, so it takes 2 keystrokes, which is the same as typing at !!!!!!!!!!

That spawned from the world of shorthand, and its just carried over to computing. Also makes separating a hostname and domain name easier, for example mowgli@pngclub.com is easier to read than mowgliatpngclub.com

But yes, using it as a short for "at" when typing normal text (loose definition there) is daft lol
