View Full Version : List of best driving roads in Britain?
I'm interested in sorting out a list. Thinking I might try and catch a few of the best ones before fuel gets to £10/liter and we all have to stay in all the time feeling miserable with no money!lol
Do not include busy roads with gatsos etc! I'm not really looking for roads that you have to drive at 3.00 in the morning to appreciate how good they are
I'll start
B645 (formerly an A road) Goes from the A1 at St Neots Cambs to the A6 at Higham Ferrers Northants. About 15 miles long. Plenty of good straights intermingled with some nice sweeping bends and pretty decent visibility throughout. Mainly local traffic but bikers and trippers to watch out for at the weekend. Off peak its pretty quiet most of the time.
I'd say A537 but I'd feel guilty if anything happened to you! Snake's Pass (A57) is great too but does have Gatsos :gay:

I'd highly recomend the Hexham to Penrith road that goes over hartside via Alston up in Northumberland
If you stick Alston in google maps it'll show you the road. I regularly do it but before 9am is the best time due to high numbers of bikers on a weekend, during the week its fine.

broomfield to boreham back roads in essex, oh my days!!! what fun i had in my gsi!!!!!!!!
The Evo Triangle in Mid Wales.
All roads round CP's farm.
Anchor Lane from Wadesmill to Bengeo in Herts. Short but ohhh so sweet.
B1004 from Bishops Stortford to Ware. Few villages along the way but still excellent fun.
Most of the smaller roads round Stansted Airport as they have to be fairly smoooth etc :D
i find all the backroads around corby are quite good, especially the oundle to corby one
There's quite a few good lanes in and around Somerset. The road that comes off Snap Hill near Charlton Mackrell and goes across the top of the hills round Street up to Ashcott is ace.
Some sections of the A37 down to Weymouth way are good too.
I think my favourite coastal route would be from Arne in Dorset and west along the coast, there's some fantastic views from the cliffs and ther roads are a great mix of wide and flat to tight twisty sections. All in, its about 135 miles and 4-5 hours driving, depending how you take it, if you go the "full" route to Dawlish, or you can cut off at various places.
From the nature reserve, take the roads across the downs to Corfe, then the B3351 towards Studland (nice beach there btw). Bear round onto Ulwell Road and follow that to Swanage. Leave there on the A351 to Holmebridge and turn off to Lulworth. Drive across the live range (best not to stop lol), there's some ace wide and flat roads there. Get back to the A531 via Winfrith. Follow road west, and come off at the roundabout on the A353 to Osmington. Drive through Weymouth and take a trip to Portland, admiring views of Chesil beach. Stop at Portland for tea and a 10/100 :p Come out of Weymouth on the B3156 then B3157 through Chickerell, which takes you along the cliffs. Follow through West Bay. Exit West Bay on the A35 to Charmouth. Turn off on the A3052 to Lyme Regis, stop and have a walk on The Cobb. Exit Lyme on the B3165 then A3052; turn off at the crossroads to Axminster. Follow the road across the river into Seaton. If you're feeling really adventurous, go through Beer and follow the lanes to Branscombe, then Weston, then Salcombe and down into Sidmouth. Follow the lanes through Otterton and take the B3178 to Salterton, take a diversion to Sandy Bay, then on to Exmouth. From there, go up to the A376 to Exeter, but avoid the city by taking the road through topsham to the Countess Weir. Follow the A379 south under the M5 (nice bit of road that), through Kenton and Star Cross. At Cockwood (snigger), turn left and follow the road rond the harbour and out to Dawlish Warren. Stop at pub and take in the view across the river mouth to Exmouth. When satisfied, head back to the M5 at Exeter and go home :p
Its blatently obvious none of you've ever been to Donegal....
The late Great Colin McCrea, Sebastian Lube, Mark Higgans, Austin McHale etc etc etc all deemed the Donegal International Rally one of the best and toughest ever. We got the best roads!!
I love the b road from Melton Mowbray to Market Harborough.
The road from Coventry to Banbury is a good one.
My own personal favourite is the lane from sutton cheney to fenny drayton in leicestershire.... its about 5 miles & 4 of them follow what was left of an old roman road. it can be done in about 3 minutes if you & the car are brave enough.

My fave is the B road from Sherbourne (near Yobvil Jack) that goes to Blandford. Some nice twisties, some little straights for over taking.
I used to commute to Bournemouth University on this route every weekend. I learnt it like the back of my hand. There is fun to be had in a 1.2L.
I'm stuggling to find a better one than Hartside pass as Novacabrio said!
A1, off at Scotch corner then take the A66, once you're through the villages etc it opens up, 60 roads and you can have some good fun, my mates mx5, yes lol. Was awesome through the twisties, just the usual sunday drivers/bikes etc to watch out for, but no gatsos!

The one that goes past the giant with his cock out? lol
Thats an ace route, some of the corners could kill though, I've seen loads of cars stuffed into hedges along the way

A14, snore lol
A41, the entire stretch of it from Wolverhampton Ring Road all the way into Wrexham :D
are you and your car brave enough Mowgli?
my dads 5 series was, but he doesn't know.
my brothers m3 was very brave, but he sold it before it killed him, he did a 720 spin at well above the speed limit whilst on the lane.........
I need to go & prove my bravery again, but the road has got loose chippings on so I can wait a couple of weeks.
M45
lol thats really for Lambo, Aston, Merc etc drivers.
I've always thought it would make a good circuit for a terminal speed run. Start at the A43/M1 interchange services early am. Cruise north up the M1 to get nicely warmed up, then build your speed to take the sweeping exit off the M1 onto M45 for a flat out run up to the roundabout and back again before rejoining the M1 south to cool down with a stop back at the services.
20 mins what do you reckon?lol

Thanks for reminding me, I love that road.
the A41 only goes to whitchurch. then isn't it the A525 (you turn left by the petrol station).
About 10 years ago, I was driving a truck from Hinckley to wrexham & back twice a day.
I got so used to that road that, one morning in dense fog, I got to wrexham in 2hrs 10 mins from hinckley. in normal conditions it took 2 hrs 5 mins.
I would love to do that in a car just to see what a real time would be.

I was expecting the A41 to be one of the most dangerous. Great road though :).

the only problem comes when after taking the sweeping exit, you nail it and hit the massive natural speedhump/dip and it tears the floorpan of your car off lol lol But I get ya point :thumb:

Shefford (Herts) to Bedford (Bedfordshire) past Chicksands ;)
Hadnt taken any notice of this thread untill now lol, Stuart is right, some of the roads around standsted airport are great. But I do like an old back road that is just out side dunmow, cant remember the name but my brother lost his 1st car to a field there.
And isnt the A12 The most dangeriours road in the uk or somthing?

The A5 from where it meets the A525 to Betws-y-Coed is a good run.

I'll second that road - done it on a bike and in a car, watch out for the odd police car but other than that enjoy the twisties!!!!!!
also if you turn left/right depening which way youre coming up alston main street (cobbles) then follow the road past the mines towards stanhope and frosterly - nice fast sweeping roads there with good scenery too!
