Hi all I have had corsa brakes on my nova for a long time now and i have always noticed aa considerable difference in braking power. I have never had a problem until last night when i was racing another nova and obviously braking came into a lot and i stopped at some lights and there was smoke coming from the wheels, i quickly pulled over and turned the engine off and let some air out of the tires cos obviously they were starting to get very hot as well and i didnt want them to go and pop on me. I just left it to cool and havent actually driven it since, any ideas what the smoke was, someone suggested that it was that the discs had over heated and it was the pads burning?? Do i need to get them grooved or anything like that? Any help appreciated thanks lads

brakes don't burn mate!, that was probably your clutch smokin, but it looks like its commin from your tyres etc, because it happened to me at the week-end!!, were you revvin quote a lot etc while u were lettin the clutch out??? did the smoke stink???

yeah it did stink quite a lot. It looked as if it was coming from the pads though. what did u get done when it happened to you, new clutch or was it ok?

ive had a sticking caliper and when u drive it they do begin to smoke

my pads were fine however but the entire hub assembly took hours too cool down and you couldnt touch the wheel/discs/pad/calipers/hub with your bare hands it was so hot

and that was only a 1 mile drive :/

prolly been driving really heavy on the brakes without vented disks

are the corsa disks vented? if not maybe u shud consider fitting some if your gonna keep that kinda driving up :)

if the pads have cracked r they still ok to drive with or do they need changing?

If the pad are cracked change them.
Overheating to the extent that they smoke is probably a sticking slider.
Drilled or grooved would have made no real difference to this.
Try some better pads next time, like green stuff or decent mintex ones.
I expect the disks are warped and will need replacing too now thoguh if oyu got it that hot, no need to let the air out of the tyres:
PV=nRT

And T is measure in kelvins!
So for the tyres to have twice the pressure (which still wouldnt pop them) the air inside would need to get to around the 500 degrees centigrade mark!

yeah - like chip said prob sticking slider/caliper probs. My front offside was sticking to the point where the brakes overheated, wapring the dicsc, shagging the pads and the small was like that stinky fishy electrical burning smell.

Got new bits and been fine ever since.

tyres r pumped up a shed load to get them fitted. bloke at garage was fitting his tyres on rally spec lans Delta the other week, they were at 160psi before they finally poped into place, mind you he made every1 evacuate the garage, and had the airline control behind a brick wall withh is fingure on the button :)

As fior the brakes i wouldnt worry i have cav16v brakes and they do smoke a little, u might have poped a cv joint and have some grease on them.

What i would do it check to see if anything is somehow leaking onto them, you made out as if there was alot of smoke coming from them, which indicates oil/grease

Yeah, thats a very good point, its very possible its not the brake pads them selves burning, check the CV joints.
