View Full Version : Front bearings loose

I've been putting the driveshafts into my Nova turbo. The knuckles were machined out and VW bearings pressed in which fit standard cavalier flanges.
Even with the C.V. joint fully tightened in, there's still play in the flange. The bearing is fitted in solid, and the flange is tight inside the bearing, the play seem's to be in the bearing itself. I always thought they always had play and this then was removed by tightning in the c.v. joints?
Any suggestions?

How tight are you done the hubnut? (Its a tight fcuker)
With the nut tightened fully, there should be no play at all.

Me standing on a large wheel brace. And it wont tighten any further.
Hmmm, fit the other shaft and see if that has play in too. If both do chances are theres something wrong with the bearings youve used. Should be rear hub VW bearings iirc?
The nut should be done to 200nm or something mental

200nm, back off, then something else much lower, 25?
The final tightness is a angle turn.
But it ends up about 200Nm

have you fitted a washer as otherwise they will never tighten up, assuming you have done it how most people do when fitting big block shafts?
What hubs you using, propper bought ones or you had some machined ?
Sounds like the CV's tightening against the hub before its preloading the bearing.
Maybe should've had a bit more machined off the width of the hub (where it sticks thru the bearing), some kind of spacer would possibly help (shouldn't really need to tho).

Just from looking at that pic, my hubs are a few MM shorter where it sticks thru the bearing.

You got it in one rich. After removing the hubs i've discovered that the flange is sticking out past the bearing by about 2 ten's of a MM. So i'm going to remove them tomorrow and have them machined shorter so that the c.v. joints clamps the bearing.
Did you have this part of your flange machined? I didnt, but then very few people have done this and so I found it hard to know exactly what was needed.

I only realised when i was about to press the hubs into the bearing, i didn't even think about it needing doing when i had the hub machined ... pretty obvious when you think about it now tho, the Nova bearing is narrower than the big CV bearing !!
I ended up 'slicing' a few MM off the end with an angle grinder !!
Mine still need to be nipped up bloody tight (tighter than i'd normally need to do them) to get rid of all the play tho, once nipped up they seem to be fine, covered about 12k with them without any probs.
The joy of modifying bits that weren't intended to be fitted to Novas !!

I had a problem with play in my nearside bearing even after fitting a new bearing to the standard hub and carrier. I found that unless I tightened the hub bolt to insanity I could hear rubbing every half turn or so of the road wheel when going round corners.
It took a while to find the culprit but a strip down revealed that my hub was worn on the outside edge where it comes into contact with the bearing - only on the inner half of the bearing sections. I did think when fitting the bearing that it went together too easy.
Probably unrelated but a suggestion all the same.
