Got a nova gte engine that im doing a head gasket change on and ive seen a piper 285 cam going very cheap. Is this cam gonna be a bit much or will it be ok? Im running all standard injection and parts etc

should be ok, but idle might not be 100% happy

I had one in my Vauxhall 1400SRI powered Mini. It was lumpy as f**k on tickover.

my friend has dropped a newer c16se into his astra (same as late nova gsi engine with DIS) weve put a autosprint 296degree rally cam in and suprisinlgy its not too lumpy at all on idle and runs rather well..

sweet :) paul's my twin, and its my job to re-build the engine this weekend

How do you time up the cam with the pulley?

I ran mine on standard marks and pulley, it was slightly lumpy (32/34 carb though), but with MPI it should be fairly normal.

If you need to set it up properly, you'll need a DTI gauge, Degree wheel etc. No need to spend daft money on an adjustable pulley though, simply take the locating pin out of the end of the camshaft, set it all up then if it does need to be in a different place simply use the hole in the pulley as a guide for drilling a new hole in the camshaft, re-insert the pin and off you go.

not if its been ground/made to suit the std pulley/belt etc...

8v Vernier pulleys are normally 1/2 a tooth out so when you dial it back to the same position as the standard pulley you think "wow" I was 5 degrees out!

Sorry, feeling a bit bitter. It could prove beneficial to have a vernier, but you'll be fine without it and for the inexperieced among us it will make the job alot more simple.

Good example of why people shouldn't speculate without first hand experience.

Well the engine is back together and fired up 1st turn of the key this morning. Running fairly rough at the moment but need to get somone to check the timing as i dont have a timing light. Is there a recommended setting for ignition timing? Also, CK said he ran standard pulley and standard timing marks, did you adjust the fuelling at all or leave it is it was?

at the moment it is a c16se with a back box and the 296 autosprint cam. might have a filter aswell but other than that its standard.

yes it would be smoother on the c16se as it runs a map sensor rather than an air flow meter. you can cheat and move the air flow meter further away from the inlet this will help run smoother.
