Cheers to Adam & Meritlover who responded to my thread a short while ago regarding the compression test and how to do it.

I just did one and it looks pretty conclusive.

Cylinder 1 = 90 PSI

Cylinder 2 = 95 PSI

Cylinder 3 = 210 PSI

Cylinder 4 = 215 PSI

I did cylinders 1 & 2 again just to make sure I got a proper reading and it was the same.

3 an 4 are a tad high lol

3 & 4 tad high or 1 & 2 tad low?

Whats normal sort of pressure for a 1.2?

no they are both out, im not sure what they are supposed to be normally but most engines I have done have been 150ish or there abouts.

Also my corsa is 80 across the board lol

so this a head gasket problem? Worn valves? Piston rings? Bores?

What is the likely problem seeing as 1 & 2 has the same symptom and 3 & 4 has the same sympton.

if your sure you did it with a wide open throttle (and choke off of course), then they look low.

repeat the test with about a tsp of oil down each plug hole, if the reading improves by about 10-30 psi then its likely bores/rings, if there is no change its head/valve/gasket related.

but its hard to say properly,
what engine is this exactly?

Yeh my dad was at the helm told him to do a wide open throttle and im pretty sure the choke was all the way down as I left it in that state before I got out the car.

Either way whatever they problem is bore/rings or vavle/ gasket its a head off jobbie.

Which Im not going to bother with time to LET it. But im kinda surprised that it went as suddenly as it did seeing as 2 mins earlier it was absolutley fine and it wasnt being thrashed for me to say "yeh thats what made it go".

oh well thats life.

sometimes engines just break. :(

piston rings, not worth rebuilding a 1.2, get something bigger

Headgaskets gone in between 1 and 2.
And aye, they can just let go.

yep there's definitly something wrong there, my 1.4 used to give 185 on all cylinders with the throttle closed....

Yeh Im gonna start shopping round for LET.

I know, its a shame, was such a solid engine kept going even when the big block Cavs ran out of fitness.

Just wasnt expecting it to go especially when it was running spot on. And not like I was thrashing it before it went so it must have just ran out of luck.

Well at least it makes it easier to get rid of the engine now :)

Fit a new HG, cost about a tenner to do.

£15 for a head gasket set :)

Did one the other day, took 2hours from start to finish and car running :)

My 1.2 has abour 220psi all round, so dont be worried by your readings for 3+4. Another vote for head gasket here, and you'll cause no further harm by taking the head off to check.

Yeh I probably could do a headgasket but I have deffinately out-grown the 1.2 now. Time for something a bit more grown up and something that will make driving the car on long journeys easier.

But I might do a headgasket anyway, think I got a headset in the garage from many years ago.
