Well seeing as my Mustard Yellow SR is going to the scrappy I thought I'd best put a thread up about my Nova Diamond. I bought the car for a bargain price from a scrapyard with 59k on the clock  and hardly any rust. The problem was the water pump had siezed in the block and some numptys had tried to change the cam belt but realised they couldn't tension the belt and had snapped several rockers lol

Initial plan was to sell the shell to fund the yellow project, then after being let down 3 times on ebay I decided to get the nova on the road, was contemplating a different engine but in the end decided to repair the 1.2, took ages to shift the pump but eventually got it out rebuilt the head and got it running :thumb: It sailed through its MOT and I could not belive how mint it was underneath and niether could the MOT tester lol. Its now got 67k on the clock and I've decided its timke to put all the kit from the yellow SR on it.

So far i've put the wheels, suspension and rear bumper on

You can't kill a yellow nova!

Steve
21-06-08, 01:02 PM
What happened to the 1600 from the yellow shell, that not going in the blue one?

What happened to the yellow shell then? too far gone? I remember the WIP from pvg but don't thing I ever saw it finished..

:D welcome back to nova ownership my friend :D

Still think the yellow sr was a little beast, cheap, tidy shells are FTW.

SKoob
21-06-08, 02:25 PM
The 1600 on twin 40s and mk2 dash are going in the blue nova, the yellow shell is restorable but as i've got such a clean and tidy shell i don't see it as worth it. I'm still not sure as to whether I should spray the blue nova yellow or not

Leeboo
21-06-08, 02:42 PM
Well I think that, for every yellow Nova that dies, another should be born! lol

But it would be a shame to turn the blue one into a money pit when it stands you very little money.

If it stays blue, touch up that front panel/wing and keep that bumper.

All IMO of course^^.

nice one, keep goin.

I'm really starting to like how it looks atm, was dead set on an SR rep, but tbh i think i'll just put the window surrounds in and leave the front as it is

bangerbrian
21-06-08, 06:20 PM
Yeah leave as it is, I like it :D but please dont scrap the yellow one!

SKoob
21-06-08, 09:52 PM
Its been a hard hard decision to come to scrapping the yellow one as it such a rare colour for a nova and I really like the car, but it really is too rusty to bother with when i've got a solid shell to use. Like I say I may spray it yellow and do a full on rep but for the moment i'm happy as it is. I've just got a 306 td as a daily driver so I can spend some proper time on the blue one. Due to my job i'll have a full 4 weeks off in 5 weeks time so some real progress will happen then in time for trax :thumb:

SKoob
01-07-08, 10:52 PM
Right then chaps, I've been busy taking all the stuff off the SR ready for its final voyage to the scrappers  I'm not sure whether I should paint the window surrounds to match the black vynal on the b pillar of the diamond or remove the vynal and paint to match the surrounds
Opinions please :thumb:

Right then, update time!

I've been busy over the last week or so :thumb:
First thing I did was change the rear beam over to one I'd painted up, fitted a 22mm ARB and some poly bushes :thumb:

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/741/dscf0823nx8.jpg

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1916/dscf0828xl4.jpg

Fitted braided brake hoses :thumb:

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/4326/dscf0825ea6.jpg

Lucky for me every brake pipe, flexi, caliper and drum was replaced before I bought the car so there wasn't any rusty unions to contend with :D

Then I removed the fuel tank, filler neck and exhaust. Guess I should of done it with the beam off really but still managed it. Dinitrolled the chassis legs and sills which are in superb condition still luckily :D

following on

Decided to turn my attentions to the front of the car, got the engine ready for removal. Just need to drain the gear box oil, pop the drive shafts out and undo the mounts. Even got a chap interested in the 1.poo too

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/2104/dscf0808jy3.jpg

Dinitrolled the front cross member, inner arch box sections and dehind the splash guards. The cross member and passenger side are totally rot free. The drivers side splash guard unfortunately isn't due to an after market access hole for an electric ariel being made and not properly sealed. Nothing a bit of welding can't sort out though. Luckily the box section is solid though

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/9545/dscf0812ur5.jpg

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6753/dscf0811ze4.jpg

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/2334/dscf0821ks0.jpg

Started to clean up the seams where the paint was getting flakey with some rust converter will finish off when the old lumps out and weather permitting

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6155/dscf0834ci7.jpg

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/125/dscf0810uv3.jpg

Got these ready to go on along with GTE/GSi tiebars and 256mm brakes with braided hoses :thumb:

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/3198/dscf0833vl8.jpg

It would probably make a few quid on ebay.

I've now got 4 and a bit weeks off over the summer (perks of working at a school :D ) I made the most of my first day off and got the engine bay primed fully

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4366/dsc00107qr8.jpg

Finished removing the underseal on the passenger inner arch, then sprayed with stone guard

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/6797/dsc00109hj4.jpg

Removed the old seam sealer behind the splash guard, slapped some fresh sealer on the seams and then stone guarded

Didn't start till quite late today due to a sever hangover lol which was a bad idea as it rained on and off all afternoon whereas the morning was dry and warm.

Got the slam panel and front panel in the first coat of paint

http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/7326/dsc00114yc8.jpg

Then got to work on cleaning the battery tray etc with some rust converter, found a couple of small holes, not sure if i'll get them patched or chemical metal them

looking good matey!

Re removing your underseal - stone chip is good but I recommend getting some shutz body sealer - the stone guard is okay but under your arches you want something more substantial - in fact anywhere where impact from stone can occur or grit get some shutz (tetrosyl body shutz).

Ebay do it in 1lts cans for £3 - you can paint it on and its nice tha thick - doesnt take too long and trust me it'll certainly protect the underside longer than the stone guard stuff!

If you want replacement vynal to make it SR style I'm hoping to get a full set made up in the very near future...

Cheers Ade, I'm undecided on the look I'm going for. If i was to go down the SR route I'm wary of the vinyl causing more rust due to trapped water etc.. The same goes for under-seal, it works great till a stone makes a hole in it and then it traps moisture. I'll see how I get on with the stone gaurd for the moment :thumb:

nice work mate................youve made a great job o0f the bay there.

have to disagree with ade ......and that body shutz stuff.......is ghastly stuff to be honest.

looks a mess.........doesnt last.....traps water.....etc etc.

its the stuff ya use if your trying to cover up a bodged job or something.

not when you've a bnice clean under arch n'all as you have mate.

but each to theyre own i guess

My front panel and front inner arches are done with it and the finish is good and its bullet proof, almost haha lol

But it is good stuff, well worth the money

SKoob
12-08-08, 07:22 PM
I have some dinitrol stuff which is similar, but as I say im gonna see how the stone gaurd holds up, i'd rather see the holes and chips in it than find rust under it due to trapped moisture, been trying to get the engine in but the weather has been stopping that  Dug my eccentric top mounts out of the loft and will fit them tonight aswell as new gaitors on the CVs. SKoob
03-09-08, 12:02 AM
Got the inlet off and the carbs off and think i've found the reasoning for the air leaks
Firstly) the inlet the head face was covered in old gasket and instant gasket from when the head had been replaced
Secondly) one of the Orings was split between the carb and inlet
Thirdly) the inlet to carb face has some very bad pitting, is it worth me getting it skimmed?

Will get some pics up tomorrow as can't be ****d now lol

The bottom pic is slightly blurry!?

Well yes it is a bit more blurry lol but I have put a saloon washer bottle in as I have no rear wiper and it neatens things up in the bay a bit. I've started taking to loom out so I can do a proper job of the wiring for the MK2 dash as I'm unhappy with the crimp connections I'm using atm. I also plan on relocating the facet pump nearer the fuel tank or even getting a SPI intank pump setup. When it gets a bit warmer i'm going to spray the drivers wing.

After a few lemon and suger laden pancakes I got the motivation to do a bit more work this evening.

How it started

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/165/dsc00210sv0.jpg

Took the carbs off the inlet manilfold, 1 of them was a complete bastid as one of the studs is at an angle, not very clear in the pic but it is, going to take it to my local engineering place, get the stud hole tigged up and redrilled :thumb:

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4485/dsc00212vn7.jpg

Also noticed on the carb to manifold face of the carbs there is some pretty bad scoring on both venturis, so going to get them skimmed at the same time

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5620/dsc00214zr0.jpg

As the weather was nice today, I got some motivation to install my newley soldered and re-wrapped wiring loom in the car and also bolt the freshley rebuilt carbs on :thumb: Firstly I changed the coolant hose from a bodged mpi hose that had a bolt blocking off the pipe to the old inlet to a 1.2 carb pipe as I had 1 lying about. Put the loom in only to find i'd wrapped to much of the washer pump wiring up so it don't reach  Got the carbs and inlet fitted, switched the ignition on to find that the fuel was pissing out of the carbs :wtf: noticed it was from the nut that encloses the fuel filter, tighted that up and tried again, only to find it was pissing out of the hole above one of the trumpets  took the top cover off to find the needle valve had stuck open as the floats had dropped to much  got that sorted and started the car which runs worse than before I took it apart lol gave up after that. Will have another bash tomorrow and get some pics and videos at the same time.

Looking great mate and good scrapyard save! Rep+ I was saying to somebody today that more nova's should be saved from scrappy's :)

Cheers :thumb: was a cracking find tbh :D

Anyway as the misses was spending the day with her mum and family I got the day to spend sorting out the nova :D Firstly took the plugs out to check the conditon of them as it was running rough as :( bit sooty so gave them a clean up, not much difference  then got the carb syncronometer out and found that they were well off, sorted that out and it smoothed out alot, then started to concentrate on the idle speed. Heres a vid of it, I think it runs really nicely now

Next job is to sort out the exhaust manifold as it blows, re-wrap the exhaust manifold and put the interior back in, an get it MOT'd then ready for the spring :D

Went down to get the exhaust manifold off to have it modified to fit properly and to re - wrap it only to find a big puddle of coolant under the car coming from the radiator :( FFS its one thing after another lol Old one is pretty damn old so could do with a new rad anyway I guess, the exhaust manifold is proving a **** to get off as due to its marvelous design you can only rotate the spanner a fraction at a time on the bottom studs and the studs are to close to the pipes to allow the ring end to go on  gonna cut the studs when or even if I can get it off lol

More failage today  got the rad out and eventually the manifold off after removing the engine mount to get some access to behind the manifold with a spanner and started taking the studs out to cut them down to make fitting and removal easier in future, got all but 1 out, the last one was bent and not all the way in either. Tried removing it and the ****er snapped  no thread sticking out and it was ****ing stuck solid and blew like a **** even with a nut on so if I leave it I know its gonna be just as bad :( gonna try some drilling and stud extracting on sunday. Also got a price from the local motorfactors for a 1.6 rad, they want £130  think i'll be getting an eebay special lol

scott.parker
25-03-09, 10:32 AM
Sounds well nice in the vid Ben, shame to here about the stud snapping, me and mike had a right fight getting his off his 1.6T, one right underneath that you can only just get to, we ended up jamming a socket on as the nut had been rounded from previous removals, total bitch, so i feel for ya lol

Ended up getting a complete lock set from a local vauxhall at quite a discount as the manager wanted rid :D just got to try and fit it now which could be interesting as I can not move the ignition to position 1 :wtf: Also went to the scrappys to get some side repeater looms and bulb holders as I misplaced mine, took the sump back off as it was leaking.

Right, not touched the car since the key snappage. I spent most of the time trying to remove the old ignition barrell from the housing

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/2527/dsc00413y.jpg (http://img517.imageshack.us/i/dsc00413y.jpg/)
gave up in the end and bought a second hand housing that was empty:thumb:

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5703/dsc00412o.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/dsc00412o.jpg/)

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5031/dsc00414tqx.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/dsc00414tqx.jpg/)

ended up grinding the old housing off as couldn't be arsed to drill the shear bolt out lol

went to vauxhall and got me a shear off bolt, fitted it hand tight just incase i'd fitted it incorrectly....

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9259/dsc00415vae.jpg (http://img219.imageshack.us/i/dsc00415vae.jpg/)

assumed everything was fitted correctly and sheared the head off only to find out i fitted the barrell housing the wrong way round  :tard: so had to drill out the shear bolt this time, got another shear bolt and fitted it correctly this time. I then found i'd misplaced the grub screws for the ignition switch :( managed to get them from the scrappy so fitted that and got the dash in, will get some pics in a bit. Next issue is putting the side repeaters back in but I can't find the rubber seals for the lenses I purchased months ago  lol I've also found loads of pics of my old mustard yellow SR and it's really getting me thinking lol

As the car is being kept in a garage away for the house with no power, I needed to get it home to do a few jobs that needed power tools, so got it trailered home. Once it was back on my drive way I got cracking on removing the b-pillar vinyl

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9154/imag0040q.jpg

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7278/imag0041o.jpg

I found that simply using a heatgun and fingernails was enough to get the job done, then using a rag with petrol to rove the sticky residue :thumb: This isn't because I prefer the non vinly look, its due to fitting these which I kept from my old SR

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/6122/imag0042r.jpg

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/665/imag0043dy.jpg

Then after following the advice from Nick J regarding a close matching paint I started spraying the b-pillar in Upol Medium grey which looks pretty damn close to me

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1508/imag0044t.jpg

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/7319/imag0047z.jpg

I've got some welding that needs doing as can be seen from the photos :( Had a bloke round to have a look and waiting for a quote so hopefully should be sorted pretty soon :d

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/8494/imag0061i.jpg (http://img109.imageshack.us/i/imag0061i.jpg/)

Shouldn't rust for a while

Sprayed up the window surrounds with the upol medium grey

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/461/imag0058a.jpg (http://img295.imageshack.us/i/imag0058a.jpg/)

Then whilst that lot was drying I romoved the vinyl from the door

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6089/imag0055z.jpg (http://img204.imageshack.us/i/imag0055z.jpg/)

http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/7042/imag0056b.jpg (http://img704.imageshack.us/i/imag0056b.jpg/)

Had a run so had to rub it down and do it again.
Put it all back together

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/6551/imag0064w.jpg (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/imag0064w.jpg/)
