recently read a thread about the best polishing stuff around... listing all kinds of things like t-cut, etc all found in halfords. And all not very good.

well i had a play at college today on an old faded red vectra.
this is what can be done with the proper polish, this was only quick spent about 10-12mins on it.

the products i used were g3 and g10 polishing compounds. both avalibe from ebay.
g3 first, wipe off excess then g10 and again wipe off excess.

G3 is a cleaning compound which is very very gritty and to be used to take the a thin layer of paint off. G10 again is a finer version of this Polishing compound which gets rid of g3 polishing swirls. Kinda like sandpaper :D

You now need to put another two stages of wax on that to make the most of it for aguments sake Stage 2 of the meg's followed by stage 3 of the meg range.

That will give an even deeper shine and also protect the paint.

I challenge you to polish a red nova more than 5 times with G3 lol

I've had a better shine than that with megs stuff as well btw, which incidentally you can buy in halfrauds :p

What do you put G3 and G10 on with?

just slap abit on with a rag and move around with polishing mop until evenly distributed and then put a small amount of water on to lubricate, and continue applying water through polishing or you will risk "burning" the paint and then polishing through to the paint beneath. and then polish until most of the polish is used up and then with a soft lint free cloth wipe off the excess

Electric polishing mop?

well i used one of the air mops we have at college but yeah can be used with an electric mop, i have done before.
and just too add, you can get a MUCH better finish, this was only a very quick 10min job just to show what can be done.
but as someone said before, you cant really do it on a regular basis as it does take a fine layer of paint off and eventually you will take all the paint off. so just polish it up and get some wax on to protect it for as long as possible.

oh and give it a quick wash with water before you start as any muck, dirt, dust on the panel will scratch it to hell when you start mopping it.

Autoglym Super Resin Polish actually makes a good finishing polish (maybe after G10).

Look into buying a good £15-£20 tub of hard wax, you can only do so much with the liquid stuff. I can recommend Harly and Collonite 476s, defo worth the money.

You can buy G3 from all bodyshop suppliers too not just the bay, and for those who dont know the use of a polishing mop and suchlike is reffered to as machine polishing but you should only really need to do it the once on your car then just stay on top of washing and polishing (with decent polish not 99p stuff from asda) and will stay shiny for quite some time!
