is there any way to trace an ip address?

my mother is having problems with a chat room that she uses quite regularly and i was wondering if there is anyway to trace the ip address to report them as they are posting some obscene pictures.any help would be greatly appreciated

surely the chat room is hosted by someone, simply report the person to them ?

You can trace it to a general area location yes.

Google for IP trace, there's a load of them out there. Or do a tracert/traceroute, whichever is the DOS one.

Bear in mind it will probably just turn up the location of the ISP server - mine comes up as Slough lol

Some chat rooms and forums post the ip address of the message. Usually its only available to admin, but some display either a part of, or most of the IP.

You cant, unless you use some form of log program.

On most forums though, mods/admin can see users IP addresses. To use for banning etc.
You can find out your own ip address by looking in your internet router/modems settings.

On here, you can't. Only admin/mods can view IP addresses.

If you want to know your own, start > run > ipconfig /all will tell you your own local IP addressing info (on windows); or have a search on google for "what is my ip address" which will give you a bunch of sites that will tell you your WAN IP address.

That will show you the "public" IP address your coming from, a lot of people use routers now so any local settings will normally be private IP's (mine aren't I have a block of 8 public IP's lol).

leave the site or tell the police, if your not willing to do either then:

a: the pictures are not really that obscene/illegal and you can ignore them,

or

b: your not that bothered by them to justify going to the police.
