    Default 1.2 5 speed conversion

Hi, I've just bought a 92 J 1.2 Merit 3 door off my Dad to use as a daily runabout and hopefully stop the Cav GSi breaking so often!!! Only problem is it's a 4 speed which is going to do my head in. Which gearbox do I need to convert to 5 speed and what other bits will I need (driveshafts, linkage etc) or will the 4 speed bits be the same? Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Matt

any 5 speed small block box will fit (1.2-1.6) although there are differences in the ratios between the eninges

1.2 and 1.4spi will be F10 wide ratio and 3.94 FD - ideally suited for motorway driving

1.3sr - F10 wide box with 4.18fd - similar to above but slightly closer ratios

1.4sr/1.4sri (some) - F10 close ratio on 3.94fd - 5th in this box = 4th in the wide ratio (and is also the same as your current 4th)

1.4sri some - F13 WR - 3.94fd as the other WR-3.94 but has larger bellhousing to accommodate 1.6 clutch and flywheel

1.6 gte/gsi - F13 CR - 3.74fd - like previous cr but ratios stretched out slightly by the lower CR

if the 4 speed is doing your head in it would suggest to me u want lower revs while cruising - in this case i'd say get a F10/13WR box

the Cr box will be the same in 5th as your current 4th gear - so you'll get better accelleration

im running a F13WR as i do a lot of motorway driving and i prefer the lower revs

    the rest is upto u

Thanks for that, you're right, I want lower revs when cruising so it looks like I'm after a wide ratio F10.
