Whats actually 'nackered' about the SRi engine?

You may get away with just swapping the bottom ends as the heads on the SR and SRi are different and isntreally just a case of swapping parts over.

The SRi will have a crank sensor. Can this be mounted to the carb'd SR lump?

This will need the bottom pulley & trigger disc with the pick up points for the crank sensor also.

Why not just have the SRi engine rebuilt instead of chucking in another used bottom end of dubious history (lets face it, its not going to be low mileage is it).

yes Mr Green, but the oil pump may be of old style and will not have dowel dimple for crank sensorage. this makes it loose and only holding on with one bolt is not secure. degrees in crank pik up may be found if not done right!!!
i am of the opinion that it should be rebuilt. even if you were just to replace big end and main bearings. it is not a great expense and should give you a lot of happy nova miles!!!!
please do the right thing and make sure the nova ends up a happy nova 1.4 SRi!!!

    Please

I'm going to agree with meritlover on this one, I have experienced differing designs of the oil pump housing myself.

You would need to use the SRi head to avoid the mis-matched ports causing problems, 14NV (carb) has stupid square ports, C14SE (SRi) has nice big round ports.
