    Default alignment of gearbox

    i got a five speed box of a mate who said it came out of an astra it fits the engine no probs but it will not engage the gears i have set it up as per haynes but no joy i have seen on here that a certain type is a cow to fit how do i know which is mine, its going on a 1.2 for insurance reasons also does the selector of a 4 speed fit a five they look the same as the one on the five was seized if that helps. cheers in advance??

    yes a five speed selector is the same as a 4 speed.
    there should b a letter followed by a 2 digit number
    near the selector. 4 a 1.3/1.4 astra/nova it is "F10".
    Make sure all the linkages r properly fitted.

    When fitting my new box i had this problem and was told that a five speed selector does not work on a four speed box and vice versa!Depends if your on about the selector in the car or the one on the box itself, i'm on about the one in the car!

    thanks guys yes stan its an f10 dunno what engine it came from dan and if i put it in gear using the selector on the gearbox itself i get no drive the clutch is working properly,the shafts are right me thinks the box is dead any ideas. (must get a 5 speed in car selector) cheers bealesy
