Default more powerfull sub good idea

I got a 500watt amp and a 500watt sub. it sounds great but when i turn the head unit a good way up is starts to distort (and i dont have the amp up very high either, if i get this 700 watt sub i seen will this cure it and if so ill be able to pump and bit more bass through it.

the main thing that i am worried about is clippig the amp. will it do this??? over a mater of 200 watts ??? i wouldnt think so.

id like u experts to get it right for me

    cheers ladeez and gents

An amp will only amplify what it is given, as the saying 'junk in, junk out' says. So by the sounds of it your headunit is sending a distorted signal at high volumes.

To set it up properly, put the headunit on 3/4 volume (about the max before distortion), then increase the gains on the amp until the sub just distorts, then put it down a tiny bit. Now you should be set up correctly with the headunit at 3/4 as your max clean signal.

Try this then see if you have the same problem
